Elite: Dangerous

New to ED and got my X52 pro Friday through Amazon. Loving it.

I do have to start off with the sidewinder because I wasn't a backer. Looks like the grind will be a steep one. Currently running missions and simple trade routes but have yet to get a novice hunting mission. I'm trying to raise my rep with Federation but the first mission they ask me to do is a 20ly trip to get some non-lethal weapons. Oh vey! Just wrapping my head around that one confuses me.

Been playing this for about 3 weeks. Loving it.

To all you new with the X-52.....download drivers, software and profile from Saitek's web site. do not rely on the CD or win7's drivers.

Went from sidewinder to eagle then to viper. thinking of going back to eagle. damn that bird can turn.

One question. in the real milky-way galaxy do all these star systems have multiple stars? Seems like systems like our own are rare. Or is the game linking multiple solarsystems in one stop?

The most common type of star system is a multi-star system. Most people think of most systems as single star systems because Sol is and because they appear as single points of light to our naked eyes.

If you're a straight NPC bounty hunter of nav beacons and resource extraction sites, the Eagle is great fun. I've been on it since Gamma (11/2014) and haven't felt the need to upgrade.

Guess its Star Citizen for me then, since they swore they'll never dumb it down for toasters. FWIW it's coming to PS4 too, after Microsoft's moneyhat runs out on timed exclusivity. So if it had to be on console I'd probably wait for the more powerful one to be supported. The graphics in this game are pretty demanding.

But I do feel bad for all the Elite Dangerous backers that were promised a no-excuses PC game, many angry people on the official forums concerned the game is still incomplete and worry that progress will grind to a halt as developer's attention is shifted.

It's highly unlikely that PC and Console users will play in the same sandbox. The UI isn't where it needs to be for the console platform.

There are many angry people on EVERY forum. And FDev's ED forums are one of the worst I've ever waded in. The room has the collective emotional maturity of an 8-year old girl.

How is that any different from here? This place has turned into the [W]hineForum. Just about every thread is full of people whining and complaining about something.

It isn't any different from here. I was trying to say something about assigning too much weight to a forum's "room temperature" because It doesn't necessarily mean anything. Mad people on an internet forum is an unreliable metric.

I don't know how many walls of texts I've read about 3.5/4.0 GB of memory. But I know how I feel about it.

The Kickstarter states they were open to every platform, not just PC, and David Braben has always said porting it to PS4/Xbone was a strong possibility.

Besides, they've been hiring people lately, 1.2 is coming out next week and 1.3 is slated for next month. If development was slowing down it would have happened already, considering the Xbone port is releasing in June/July.

holy shit, I played the X games with no issue, but after 3 hours, my friend and I cannot even find each other in game.

Wait for the 1.2 patch this Tuesday. It introduces proper co-op/wingmen mechanics, so you will always be able to see your buddies, share bounties/trading profits and even jump together.

Does that mean it's going to get a single player mode?

It is called solo. You still live in the persistent universe, but don't have to play with others directly.
Do they make the grind more fitting to a single-player game? or is it still the inflated MMO grind to keep people playing longer...

It depends on your play style really; you can get by just fine without grinding for anything, but if you're the type to want the best gear out there then be prepared to put in the time.

I wanted a Python for the longest time, but when I did the calculations of how many hours it would take of repeated trade runs to just afford one, I pretty much gave up on the game. If I'm going to put that much time in to mindless fetching, I want it to have an impact on my gameplay somehow.

Exploration (at least as it stands) doesn't really float my boat and bounty hunting gets old after a while since there's no real goal. I plan on picking the game back up after the planetary exploration is implemented, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one if it took them this long just to incorporate co-op play.

More fitting? You don't have to deal with asshat CMDRs that shoot you down for no good reason. But the NPC AI is identical whether you play Open or Solo. But with NPC/AI wings- that may change dramatically. (being interdicted by a wing of NPC/AI Vipers would be a bad day)

And the game is as grindy as you want it to be. Trading is the only route to quick money in ED, so make of that as you will. But you can still make steady money just doing NPC/AI bounty hunting.

Sure, but isn't there always the danger of some griefing pvp'er ten thousand times more powerful than you? I don't play pvp games since I play games to relax, not be stressed out like at work.

No, not in solo. AI may try and interdict you, but if you can fly your ship it is 99% of the time avoidable.

Solo means alone.

This is why I play solo. WAY too many smaktards being stupid in open play, not much fun when they are crashing into you while you try an dock just for kicks, or they block the portal so you cannot get in. Just play solo.

Yes, I'm aware of what solo means. You could also solo in shadowbane but that didn't mean you wouldn't get ganked by asshats so what you're saying doesn't make a lot of sense.

It's an MMO right? So there are other people in the persistent universe with you right? Is there something stopping them from ganking you? Is it instanced like D3? I wish their own website would answer these questions.

It'd be nice knowing what differences are made for solo. If it's just putting you in your own instance without any other tuning to grinds of difficulty, then it may be pretty bad. Imagine playing any MMO solo... doesn't sound fun to me.

Solo means solo. No other players, ever.

If you look at the game as a grind, then it's not for you. Play it for the excellent core flight/combat mechanics. I've been playing it on and off for about 3 months now and the combat is still enjoyable, the credits earned are merely a bonus.

The biggest and most expensive ship isn't necessarily the best ship for all situations, either. A shitty player in an Anaconda (150m value) will always lose to a good player in a Viper (150k value).

It's not that I'm thinking this game is a grind...
I dont know about this game, which is why I'm posting in this thread to get insight, but mmos in general have intentionally inflated grinds. And if this game is tuned in the same way then id imagine playing it solo without any tunings for that would feel like playing any mmo solo where it takes forever and there are challenges that are impossible without other folks to help.

Well it's not really an MMO. It's more like a multiplayer sandbox game. There's nothing you need other players for and everything can be done alone.

They are overhauling the mission system soon though, possibly in the 1.3 patch due next month, so you may want to wait for that first.

When I say you play alone without other people in a persistent universe what is unclear about that? You are walled off from other players, but inhabit the same space. Solo means no interactions with other human players, just AI.

This really isn't that complicated.

Unfortunately they've made it very complicated by not communicating very simple mechanics and going against established definitions.

I understand what you mean now although it's very illogical.

If someone had simply stated "no, you can't be ganked', I would have bought it day 1.

As is, they've proven that they have very poor communication skills so I'm not giving them money.

All I want is a good spiritual sequel to privateer, why is that so hard to deliver?

MEEEE TOOOO!!!!

Hence my questions as well. It doesn't sound like they've tweaked the solo experience so it doesn't have an excessive MMO grind to it. Here's hoping Star Citizen will have a true single-player experience.

Ok, you cannot be ganked in solo play by other human players.

Try Jumpgate. Back when there almost was a Privateer Online, Net Devil's engine was going to be used for the game. When all the resources were instead put into Anarchy Online, Net Devil decided to release their own game (published through 3DO, who fucked them over).

The game is now playable for free, though I doubt you won't find many people actually playing it. I loved that game, but it was really the people I played it with. If they still played it, I probably would too.

The first time I got ganked was at Lave- I was coming right out of the dock and a Python saddled up behind me, sent a "Hello" in chat and two-shot me with Rail Guns. I was in an Eagle, with no cargo and no bounty. But I didn't lose anything apart from the 50K insurance. I just cashed all my vouchers- and only lost progress on a routine warzone mission I never got to start. I've since learned that smaktards only gravitate in the core and the anarchic systems. Easy fix.

I'm lucky to see two or three other CMDRs when I go online- and others CMDRs mostly keep to themselves. I didn't see the point in staying in Solo just to avoid those guys.

Yeah, you only really need to stay away from the super popular systems if you're worried about griefers. But that could be said about any multiplayer game.

The far majority of players I've encountered outside of Lave were friendly.

That said, I do think they need to drastically increase the penalty for murder. 6,000Cr is like what, 30 seconds of work? Probably make it like a % of current total assets, and have the bounty come out of the murderer's pocket.

I have a question. I have been in Sol for about a week. I see A LOT of ships when I am docking or heading out. They all seem to have the docking computer. Am I wrong to assume all of these ships are NPCs? The docking stations are so busy I have to be extra careful when going in and out that I don't hit someone popping up on the other side of the door. Is it that busy in solo play?

Traffic around stations and entering/exiting the slot is an issue regardless whether you're in Solo or Open. The only real difference is that actual CMDRs are not as predictable as NPC/AI dockers. (and humans generally won't wait for that fat Lakon Type 9 to get through the slot/toast rack, and will try to squeeze by)

But it also depends on the system/station. The more populated ones will tend to be busier.

Check the out the blips on your scanner. The hollow ones are humans.

Wow. That is a surprise. A whole new wave of users can bitch about it now. :D

Is there anything that can be done in groups? Is there a way to group up for activities? I was going to wait to get some better sticks, but it being on Steam now intrigues me.

I know every company can't be open, but I would like to have a break down of their KS sales, website, after launch, Steam day one, and Steam long term sales. Would be interesting to read. A couple of other Indie publishers posted their experiences last year.
