Those 8GB Radeons held up pretty good in this torture test. The XFX 8GB 290X only goes for $354.00 @NewEgg. The VRAM usage on these tests was ridiculous. 4GB cards are so yesterday. :) Nvdia 980 SLi couldn't even complete the 3DMark test. The Shadow of Mordor test is very telling. Hell all of the tests are pretty remarkable.

And before someone says, "Why?" remember that Occulus Rift and other VR headsets are coming. They need really high resolutions at high frame rates to keep consumers from becoming motion sick. Also a 4K Occulus Rift sounds completely badass you have to admit. ;)

Just goes to show a single card just wont cut it at 4k with any type of high graphics setting. Hopefully the 390x and whatever Nvidia has planned, will go a ways to changing that.

Worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Aint gona bother trying 4K till its mainstream and 4k can be easily handled by a single card. Few years is a long time in the PC world. Few GPU generations away.

No sense buying that 8GB card when, when the time comes there will be a card 10x faster and with 12-16GB ram.

Always more demanding stuff around the corner and better hardware for it when the time comes.

Now if only 4k monitors supported better frames. I tried one and it still wasn't even close to what I am used to

+1.

Glad I'm not the only that thinks this. I keep debating getting a 4k monitor but I realise that, even with SLI 780Ti, the frame-rates are going to be rubbish. Either that or I end up turning all the settings way down just get a game playable.

I'd rather stick with my 1440p for now which are Tis are fine for and jump when the processing gap to 4k has been met, as you rightly say, by a single card with sufficient VRAM.

I'm skipping this gen (900 and 300) and will maybe upgrade when the true next-gen (i.e. not a refresh) drop.

I'm rather impressed with that 8GB Sapphire 290x, really shows that extra VRAM does help on ultra high resolutions, I would have gotten one if it had HDMI 2.0 and unfortunately my 4K TV doesn't have DP.

These results are what you'd expect comparing an 8 GB card to a 4 GB one at those quality settings, but, I'm sorry to say, these are not playable numbers either way. Also Crossfire/SLi and the Oculus Rift do not mix because of the latency requirements.

Not pooh-poohing here (though I am :p), but in case anybody decides to leap on this for the reasons you stated, I felt I should clarify things.

Who the hell uses 8K Rez? 4k isn't even in regular usage yet. Fuck this "beyond perception" resolution bullshit. They can make things 10000x as sharp but I'll stop when it's practical to the human eye.

Impressive, the fact the 290x can still beat a newer generation flagship card shows how far ahead AMD overshot with the 290x. Also, Crossfire is very much relevant with Oculus Rift, as one of the main developers themselves said Crossfire can work to reduce lag.

This is why AMD is dying out. They made a useless 8 GB sku, that outside of worthless and unplayable epeen 8k tests, is meaninglessness. GG AMD.

So they did a 4gb vs 8gb review and didn't post or graph vram usage.....thanks

Glad I read this because I really wanted a gtx 980. But there was a lot of sense here that I read to help make my decision. Thanks

Should have thrown in the GTX970 too.
Prices are similar.

If they were to do that, then they should also include the 290 as it is its main competive card at this moment in time. It's not really needed as far as i know, it only comes with 4gb or ram.
