DARPA can hack your car now? Uh oh, if you have OnStar, you'd better start wrapping your car in tinfoil.

According to the report, which is scant on technical details, DARPA engineers dialed in through the Impala's OnStar system, transmitted a data packet that confused the internal computers, and then planted a malicious bit of code that allowed it to reprogram control systems on the ECU.

DARPA kinda has resources the average neckbeard lacks and also seems to have too much time & budget on its hands.

Great use of their resources.
Bad guy gets in suburban w/onstar.
Suburban crashes, bad guy dies.
No American lives risked, excellent deniability.

People did this before DARPA did,.......this isnt news.

Anything.......annnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyyy thinnggggggggggggggggggggg that communicates in any way, shape, or form can be hacked with enough time and effort put into it.

Ted talk showed a guy hacking a diabetic insulin module that could kill them by giving too much or not giving any insulin.

Same ted talk showed without Onstar how you can hack a car with blue tooth as an option , and then hack into the ECU, TCM, and ABS to do whatever you want.....

All you need to do is unplug the OnStar module.

Just for the Onstar portion.

However, if the car has a HomeLink system, or blutooth or RF for key fobs, it can still be hacked in some way.

never getting a new car lol

DARPA's job is to show proof of concept.

I'll say it one more time: If you don't want someone else playing with it, don't connect it to the internet.

I just bought a new Challenger and damn this 2015 puts that old ones to shame as a daily driver. Doesn't mean I wouldn't sell your kids for a '68 Charger R/T, Black on Black, Bucket Seats, Hurst Shifter, just the basics :D

Can you even buy a new car these days with absolutely none of these features (spy tools) so one can opt out of all this hackable tech? If not, it appears it's not actually hacking in the sense of finding a flaw in the code but just hacking in the sense of accessing the already built-in backdoors big companies get paid to put in, either through their own spying or the governments. I remember seeing an article not too long ago on how the new corvette was illegal in more than a few states as it records all conversations inside the car....lol.

We're buying products and being used as one.

Bluetooh OBDII interface modules exits relatively commonly, problem is someone needs to install one in the car.

Those are government mandated and soon will have firewalls requirements which is why these stories are coming out now. Because it will be a non-story soon.
