Need help in directing Smart TV internet audio to receiver's 5.1 speaker system, not

Have new 60" 3D Samsung Smart UN60H6400 TV and Yamaha RX-v377 receiver currently hooked to four high quality speakers. Additional speakers will be added soon. It is set up so cable box feeds receiver thru HDMI cable, with another HDMI cable feeding the TV from the receiver. Radio, TV broadcasts and DVD player with HDMI cables to receiver direct audio to the speaker system with excellent sound.

Just starting to explore wireless internet reception for movies, but find the audio from internet sites comes only from the TV stereo speakers. I want all audio to feed the multi channel receiver. I must be brain clogged today as have not comprehended the wiring required to do this.

Is this a simple matter of adding an optical digital 'out' from the TV to the optical digital 'in' of the receiver, thus having two audio feeds to the receiver? Or is turning off the TV speakers at a menu likely to redirect the audio signal back thru the HDMI cable?

Or more complicated that that... seems it should not be complicated, but tonight my brain is not in gear. Assistance much appreciated.

this.
you need some way of getting tv audio back to the receiver. HDMI input doesn't output audio back to the receiver.

I'm not sure what it would do if you have another device via HDMI on the same as the output as the optical in though.

I currently have optical out from my TV to the TV/SAT output on my receiver. Though I don't have any other device connected to TV/SAT on the receiver.

Thanks to all for reading. I spent about 6 hours today reading every (it seems) online info source out there and find many have same problem. Saw no 'solved' problems posted. However tomorrow I will spend time trying every possible wiring arrangement. It sounds like several persons resort to reconfiguring their wiring for each individual use, which really defeats the purpose of equipment having many in/out options) and have to use multiple remotes. Wife does not want that method -- keep it simple is her request, as well the requirement of the grandkids. One way or another, I will get it done and report back what I ended up doing. Please, if any others have resolved this successfully, I would love to hear your approach. First objective is to get it working correctly. Second objective is to consolidate remotes and control for simple switching without moving wires every time.

j-sta... I located my toslink cable and will try that approach first thing tomorrow.

bloodypulp... ARC works on HDMI input to receiver and is what I use for regular cable TV and DVD sound. But I need a manner of getting audio output from the smart TV to feed the input of receiver. Sorry I do not understand how the wiring arrangement you suggest could be setup to reproduce internet sourced sound. The TV does not have an HDMI output.

ARC allows it so that you can feed your receiver from your TV via the HDMI Input on your TV. So no, you are not using ARC anywhere if your CATV/DVD STBs are connected directly to the receiver.
Basically you need to make certain both your TV and Receiver support ARC, and then just enable it in the TV Options and make it so that your receiver is setup on the "TV" Source(or whatever it calls it), and then it'll work. Also, not all HDMI ports on your TV will support ARC either, only 1 will so look into which one that is.

Progress report -- some success, but not proper (yet?). I will keep trying and as always welcome suggestions. And thank you for replies already received.

Tried about every wiring configuration I could think of, and did get some internet sourced audio when using an optical-digital toslink cable from the TV into the receiver. However volume was very low and I had to turn volume control to almost full blast to have low-to-barely-adequate sound 8 feet away. What sound I had was front channel only - no sound at all from the surround speakers. Could not tell whether the source was more than stereo as broadcast, but it was not suitable for enjoying a good film.

Internet reception was via wireless from a good repeater setting about 25 feet away. Originating router was about 40 feet away from repeater with signal passing thru three interior walls. Reception halted at times, but did not determine whether it was just buffering or signal interruption. Cannot install hard wired cat-6 to TV location at this time due to the outside wall construction.

Not defeated, but really thinking the best option would have been not to buy a 'smart' tv and save several hundred dollars upfront. Then use a Roku to obtain wireless signals, feeding the receiver from the Roku using a HDMI cable. That setup would have yielded ARC feed to the sound system and opened up many more internet site options. May buy a Roku anyway as it can be moved to other locations in home or vacation rentals very easily.

I have a really dumb question... Can you reverse the flow of the HDMI connections?
Go cable box -> TV -> Receiver, so that the receiver is being fed all audio by the TV?

for Syran-
You do not really reverse the 'flow' on the HDMI. But yes, you can feed the cable box to TV via HDMI, then connect the TV to the sound system by using an 'digital optical out' on the TV to an 'digital optical in' on the receiver (or soundbar). Several professional installers prefer this layout, especially if you are planning to use a soundbar speaker arrangement. Most newer TVs seem not to have any analog audio out ports and have one digital optical out.

for all-
Latest update on my setup trials. Grandson was here yesterday and has a Netflix account. He ran a test on my system using Netflix. Good sound came thru the system (using digital optical cable from TV). Definite volume improvement noted instantly, but some was stereo only. So a bit of my frustration was due to using 'free' movie downloads during my initial setup testing and probably inconsistent signal quality. Looks like I need to select a paysite for movie downloads. And I can foresee installing a cat 6 hardwire when weather warms and I can do the exterior house mods.

Well, what I meant by reversing the flow, was the direction that things went. Not the actual flow of data, but more was, could the TV pass audio out via HDMI to an input on the receiver? I don't have your model, so I can't test it myself, but it's what i've done with my Smart TV (Vizio), it allowed for me to output HDMI (via ARC, audio stream only) to my soundbar in the bedroom, and I run the Joey (Dish) into the TV via HDMI input.
