4K capable consoles would be great and all, but can anyone tell me where all the 4K content is?

Netflix first started talking about this publicly at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in January when, according to The Huffington Post, Netflix’s Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt suggested during a press conference about Netflix’s support for High Dynamic Range technology that Sony had ‘promised’ a PS4 hardware revision that would give the console 4K video capabilities.

They will play 4K videos from Netflix, but only displaqy 720p at 30fps.

I was under the impression that the PS4 already could display 4K video. Not like it really matters much to me either way. I'm just glad more movies have some form of surround sound.

The PS4/Xbox One are both 4K capable with H.264, but neither of them support HDCP 2.2 for protected content, HDMI 2.0 for higher frame rates, or HEVC for higher quality at lower bitrates.

Basically, current consoles can play 4K YouTube at ok quality using a bunch of bandwidth, but not Hollywood video, at high quality with a reasonable bitrate to stream.

What's the point of streaming 4k video when it's going to be compressed to hell?

Same reason you streamed "1080p" Youtube videos, even though they're not really Blu-Ray quality. It's because the lower-def streams are even worse bitrate, so anything is better than what we have right now is an improvement :D

Not only that, but what ISP or cable company is capable of distributing a TV signal at 4K? Fios which is top notch is only 1080i and I doubt they have the infrastructure to comfortably play 4K content... lunacy:rolleyes:

Maybe in America, but the rest of the world where they are actually investing in infrastructure, this is good news kinda...

Nice one, idiot at Forbes mis-stating Netflix that there will new 4k capable consoles......I hate articles like this, not based on any real info, and its all BS posturing to get you to read the article.

Spoken like someone who's never been to "the rest of the world" but what they do know for sure is that America sucks...

Netflix, still giving a big 4K f--k you to PC users. I mean who cares about the people who actually have 4K screens and use them...

True, kind of... I'd rather have increased bitrate at a lower resolution like 1080p than increasing the resolution and losing fidelity due to the compression ratio being higher. Netflix' current bitrate for 4k content is 15.6 Mbps, which at 24 Hz is a compression ratio of ~327:1. Comparatively, their 1080p content at 7 Mbps is compressed 170:1.

They'll just take all the old movies and tv shows with worse than dvd quality, and upscale them to 4k so they can be over compressed and crammed into a low bitrate stream.

Are we talking about the same two consoles that aren't even fully 1080p capable when you're gaming?

Sprinkles and whipped cream on a pile of shit.

Amazon does it too, its the content providers. They believe all the PC are the haxx()rs and Consoles are locked down. Bill Gates told them so.

Looks good and another plus for my Xbox One. :) However, I do not have a 4k tv anyways so it will be a long time before I can benefit from this.

Last I heard was that the PS4 has no support implemented currently, but can output 4K non-game material. Would it be okay scaling sub-4K in software? If so then what's the use of more than 4k30, if it's not a licensing deal of having to take in the new HDCP?

100% sure you could make a 30fps locked 4K rendering indie game for it and I want to do it even if the are nothing but 4k versions of ancient classics.

How much could you do with 4K and 32 megs of esRAM though?

Not only that, the 1080i they deliver today is complete shit compared to what they had a few years ago (been a subscriber since 2009). When they added more channels they ran out of bandwidth, which means we now have hundreds of blurry HD feeds

Still not quite as as bad as Comcast, but not worth the cost of entry any more. If they already can't handle 1080i, imagine the load that 4k would add!

Depends on what game you are playing. Some games are 1080p.

Xbox One and PS4 are capable of displaying a 4K video.

Projecting much? Where did I say America sucks? Please put more words in my mouth...

Relevancy: Would you like to compare stamp collections? If you even know what that means...

He's not wrong, Europe's way ahead in this area right now, the only exception we have is in a few areas where municipal broadband is deployed or fringe ISPs like Google Fiber and Sonic etc exist.

I can't imagine 4k market taking off unless Comcast, for example, permanently does away with the 300gb cap, that limitation already gets eaten up in no time with 1080p streaming.

Not to mention the speed and cost of services offered where they have a monopoly. Lucky time to be a Kansas resident for internet service.

I think they are inferring New hardware, so YOUR Xbone can't, but buy a new one that has a few upgraded hardware bits and it then can.

Seems silly to me... Like when the 360 released the inevitable hdmi capable units, but only less compelling.

Link?

so if I wanted this feature, I'd have to get rid of my xbox one which I rarely use anyway...

I see no physical reason why the current xbox one can't do it without some software patching and properly written apps. There's enough power under the hood for that... but money right?

The justification is lack of hdmi 2.0, which is necessary to support the latest version of hdcp, which can't be emulated in software.

Yup, s everything else is there.

We are only a firmware upgrade away from watching mediocre quality 4K videos over mediocre consoles downscaled to 1080p and uprezzed to 4k! Hurray?

Well, not exactly. The consoles both have HDMI 1.4a, which can handle 4k at 24fps. But a newer version of HDCP is going to be required for these new "higher-def" 4k h.265 streams, which can't be introduced through a software update.

What the fuck do peasants need 4K for.
So they can watch master race "Lets Play" videos online of what PC gaming is like.

Its like when women watch the royal wedding and what not and envy the princess, living vicariously that way.

Yeah but HDMI 1.4 supports 4k up to 30Hz which is enough for Netflix.

Xbox One also has Displayport 1.2 which can support 4k up to 60Hz.

No need for a hardware upgrade.

Since always. My Xbox One has a Displayport on the back.

Proof please. I own an Xbox one and I have never seen a display port on the back of it. Show me an image please and point out where it is. I you sure you are not just confusing one thing for another?
