I got a couple of GTX970's here... for folding only. My question is if my older MB/CPU/RAM combos are up to the task. I've got two 1366 quads and a 1156 quad here, and top range motherboards. Good enough?

Yep good enough. If you're folding on BOINC you *may* find a very slight increase in times with Einstein, but otherwise no issues.

Your cpus will provide more than enough grunt to handle those gpu wu.

Just make sure you have enough PCIe slots with at least 8bit. On less you loose points. Else the 970 is awesome for folding.

If you want to avoid core 15 I would suggest to run Linux , only core 17 then, but also only one project at this time.

I was thinking of using an ASUS M3F for this. It does 2.0 x8 if I use the two top slots, but I'd rather use the bottom one (2.0 x4), because of the extra space between the cards. If that's a bad idea PPD wise, I won't. 2nd option is some AMD mobo + a Deneb, or Thuban. Still not 100% sure if good enough..? The final option would be a 1366 Xeon + R3BE, but I'd rather not use it as it's supposed to be my 1366 OC mobo. On the other hand, I know for sure it's good enough.

I'm loosing 40k points on a 970 in a 4bit slot vs wider slot.
265k normally vs 220k on 4bit for the same project 9201
