First things I did with windows 10 was shut off all the annoying security crap.

Turn of smartscreen and UAC
Go into control userpasswords2 to automatically log in without a password
administative tools - > local security policies - > Disable Administrator Permission

I have not figured out how to get adobe flash working with firefox. It only works with IE.

Have not figured out how to share folders with OSX. Previously I gave read/write permission to guest but win10 doesn't seem to allow this.

Does anyone else have some tips to make win10 more usable?

Not following your recommendation to disable SmartScreen filtering and UAC would be my recommendation.

after disabling SmartScreen UAC it still prompts me for permission when copying files and folders into program files. I'm having more trouble getting flash to play with firefox and sharing files with OSX. With windows 7 I enabled sharing with guests. I have added that to the folder I want to share but the "Guest" is greyed out. Perhaps some of these are similar to 8/8.1 but I skipped it over.

Share with the Everyone group? That's what I do to share with anything & everything.

If you're in physical control of the PC, I have no issue with logging in without a password.

Except for when someone steals it.

I see no problem with having automatically login on a desktop.

I figured our the shared folders issue with advanced sharing settings
Still trying to figure out getting flash to work with firefox and chrome

I would be more concerned about the cost of replacing stollen goods than anything else

The information on these devices is potentially worth a lot more than the cost of the device. I'd rather eat the cost of the device than having my valuable data leaked. Logging on without a password just isn't acceptable these days.

Turn off the windows firewall and make sure that your computer is plugged directly into the modem. It should have a public IP address.

Be sure to disable Windows Defender, DEP and system restore too. Don't bother with anti-virus or anti-spam or anti-malware.

Oh and make sure you install Java SE 1.1. You can find that under the Java download archives. No need to install that 8.x crap.

Flash works with chome but is disabled for FF
Avast shows flash 16 available for update but hitting the tab just sends me to windows update.
The build in flash [32 bit] for 10 must outdated.

Flash now works with FF, had to turn it on which was different since I never had to before.

UAC is annoying as hell though, having to OK your favorite programs constantly.

If you're having to OK your favorite programs constantly, your favorite programs are antiquated.

Only when they update. And there are ways of adding exceptions to the UAC without disabling it.

The only thing I do with UAC is move the slider down one so that it doesn't dim the screen. Not annoying in the slightest.

If you do not set it to the lowest when you install programs the icons will retain the shield which looks dumb.
Only when they update? damn near every program you open up will dim the screen and ask you if you are sure.
That is annoying, yes damn it I want to run this program.

Gpu-z is just one example.

Looks dumb... okay, your opinion.
Not sure what programs you're using. None of my normal use programs require UAC. Only monitoring and system adjustment programs do (i.e. CPU-Z, Easeus Partion Master, etc). Hardly "damn near every." No games have the prompt, no Office programs have the prompt, no Internet programs have the prompt.

What programs?

I have a substantial game library and I can only think of a few older titles that absolutely require admin privileges (along with heavy patching for Vista/7 compatibility). If you're constantly having to respond to UAC prompts something is wrong. Usually it's because people install games in Program Files. Make a separate games folder or drive for game installs.

I have UAC at the maximum setting plus mandatory password prompting and it's never annoys me at all, most of the time I only see it when I'm installing things. Unless you sit around opening GPU-Z all day it really shouldn't be an issue.

Privilege authorization features like UAC are a key security component of all modern OS's. They provide an additional layer of protection against unknown exploits. Without UAC you'd never even know.

And I posted a method of allowing a specific program through UAC without prompt while not disabling UAC at all.

Okay, so how do you turn it on please?
Tried everything to get it running in FF, except turning it on

Dimming is a useful mechanism because it signifies that all input is going toward the UAC prompt. At the second level, malicious scripts can automatically trigger a 'Yes' click on the prompt. At the third level and above, UAC has full control over the machine.

It's not a big concern unless you're already plastered with some kind of malware, but it's still recommended to keep it at its highest level. In Windows 8+, the graphics driver can switch modes so quickly that it doesn't blank the entire display, which makes dimming much less annoying.

It was practically by accident.
Was on some site that had imbedded video that you could not see and a prompt about it needing flash.
Hit the icon and boom, flash was on and working.

You would need to find some site that has a promo video or something like that to trigger the prompt.

Maybe 8/10 is different but at first when I set up 7 the slider was on default and programs I installed had the popup if I wanted to run them along with the shield.
I put the slider down to the bottom and eventually 7 learned.
I do not have any icons with a shield now.

So you made the mistake of installing the programs to 'program files' folder. Make a new folder and install your stuff there, no shield.

Installed programs to the default folders, yes.
7 eventually learned and the icons went away.

Not sure 8/10 will but maybe, not enough time has passed.

Not going to uninstall programs just to put them into another folder.

Microsoft wants apps to save their volatile data (ie. settings) to the user's home directory, not to %programfiles%, which a lot of older apps (and newer ones) do. Your apps may be trying to do this.

Could be to the home user directory.

You also have program files plus program files (x86).

None of my icons have shields so it fixed itself.
