I have a 2 bdrm apt. Using comcast modem with 4 ports that is located in bdrm with 2 computers. I need to install a network out in second bdrm and 2 outlets in living room on opposite walls where 2 more computers are.
I have a friend that is going to help me run the cables up through crawlspace above apt. I need to know what cable to get and what ends to use. Should I install a switch by modem as it does not have enough ports for all the computers and outlets needed? Then run cables from switch into wall and up to all locations?
Any help and advice here is welcome.

Better to have a switch in the bedroom and living room. Easier to run one cable into a switch and have the expandability than two and discover you need more later. Plus, gigabit switches are dirt cheap anymore.

How would I do that without having cables running outside the walls? Could also use recommendations on switch to look for.

If you just need a decent solid connection, Power line adapters would work. I use this in my 2 story 3 BR 1300 sqft house from the first floor to the second. I see about 120Mbit a second of speed and decent latency.

Umm you COULD do what you are suggesting... basically you plan to have a 6 port wall switch at the router location, and those 6 wires will go to various devices throughout your apartment? They'll then plug into the switch using 6 of the 8 ports.

The other way is to have those 6 cables come through a low voltage wiring hole, and into the switch... benefit is you can always have additional cables come out... downside is you have wires coming out of the hole (although you use a wall plate with the hole)... either way works.

Honestly I have a 6 outlet plate behind my desk, where my router is. I have a switch in the basement and a patch panel. All of my cables at my wall plates go to the switch, however Im using one of those as my UPLINK.

In your case, i mean, it's up to you. If all 6 of those wires are going to one location (say a desk in the living room and your routers in the bedroom), then i'd just put two switches in. Router in the bedroom goes into a switch, and you connect your devices in the bedroom... then on the other end another switch (uses that wall jack as it's uplink).

All depends on what you plan to do now and expand on.

For me, i have the ability to have a central switch and ran wires everywhere else.
