Got two partitions on my hard drive and wonder if its possible to increase the size of C without the need of a third party software?

Would this work or could it somehow mess things up?
1. Copy contents of D onto external drive.
2. Delete partition D from desktop computer.
3. Increase size of C with Disk Manager.
4. Create a new but smaller D partition.
5. Copy back the files from external drive onto D.

Windows will only expand the partition if it sees empty space to the right of partition C.

Third party will allow you to move partition space anywhere you want.

No need for third-party bloat, the OP has answered his own question providing he hasn't installed apps/programs to D:/

Why would you want to do it that way rather than just "sucking it up" and using GParted? That is a bit ridiculous. I mean... I suppose it's best to back up your data either way, but I still think just resizing the partitions with GParted would be easier.

Sorry, but I don't see how hard it is with using the correct tools.

  1. Open Disk Management.
  2. Right-click on D:/ and delete partition.
  3. Right-click on C:/ and select extend, select remaining space and hit go-go button.
  4. Close all windows and start copying data back, sit down and watch some porn while waiting.

This not a great idea. You may lose any permission or timestamp metadata on your files/directories. You also need to ensure that the drive is not in use during the copy (this is sometimes fun to trace down).

Please just use GParted. Guaranteed to work properly.

The only BS I see here is the stuff you're spewing. (edit: reference to the deleted post removed by mod and not mentioned here)
GParted is a "correct tool", the method your pushing is very unnecessary.

With gparted it is very simple.

  1. Boot the gparted iso. It starts gparted up for you.
  2. Shrink the D: partition
  3. Move the smaller D: to the end of the drive
  4. Increase the size of the C: partition
  5. Apply changes.

Not rocket science.

Read the OP and take close note of what was asked!

Use the VERY simple OS tools, they are there already and don't require downloading a third-party tool (ISO) then having to boot into it, then run the risk of wiping the volume if you mess up.....

Can't help mods with power-tripping needs.

If by copy files, you use robocopy with the correct flags to copy permissions, /s I think and a second one too I think also, you will be fine.

I would boot into safe mode to do the copy, and expand, and stuff, then copy back, then reboot back into normal.
