Elite: Dangerous

Hotas are inflated in price or just plain sold out everywhere. Seems like this game is bringing people back to space. Pity I can't afford the game much less a hotas atm.

Completely unnecessary. I picked up a logitech extreme 3D joystick from Microcenter for $15 on clearance, and that's plenty good enough.

I was going to say, it doesn't seem like a flight sim where you have to tweak trim and all that junk...seems like a HOTAS is unnecessary.

A TM T-Flight Hotas X runs like, $30-35 from Amazon last I checked. EDIT: Just checked, $49.99? Wow...

except the logitech 3d extreme i own causes issues in several games. Like bf 4, i have that joystick plugged in and i cant move or the fire button spams. Saitek is where i will be going for my hotas.

just look up what HOTAS actually means (doesn't mean trim etc..)

It stands for Hands on Throttle and Stick - it was designed for fighter pilots with the express purpose of controling complex systems without having to remove your hands from the Throttle and Stick.

the question you have to ask yourself when you play is, how often do you take your hand off the joystick to use the keyboard..

if the answer is never then a HOTAS is not required :)

The used market is a great way to get a HOTAS. Check ebay, amazon's used section and warehouse, etc.

Depends on what you are looking for. Mad Catz/Saitek HOTASs seem relatively easy to find, just have $200 ready. If you're going for a CH setup however, good luck.

Dude, I know what HOTAS is...I own an X-45 and use to play IL-2 and LO:MAC.

What I am saying is that this game doesn't appear to require that level of complexity.

It doesn't need trim, but it's been useful having things like the 3 thruster axis (up/down, left/right, forward/back) all bound separately, along with UI controls and whatnot. I don't have to use the keyboard while playing until I dock, then I use the mouse to buy commodities and use the station UI.

Seems like my friends whom have gotten into this game have gone DEEP. One even built a custom desk to better incoroporate his controls.

No, ED is not a high-workload high-fidelity flight simulator, (where you can manipulate/operate every button/switch/dial on the instrument panel)

But the entire point of HOTAS is that assigning commands to the throttle and stick buttons is super convenient. Flying around becomes bound to muscle-memory and you don't have to hunt/peck the keyboard and do the keyboard-command translation (G=Gear, Tab= Afterburner, etc) in your head. You spend more time actually flying than interacting with the keyboard.

There is literally the equivalent of 24 buttons on my throttle and 24 buttons on my stick (and six axes of movement) I use them all in ED. Sometimes I wish I had more. And I have two dozen commands in Voice Attack too.

I got a Warthog HOTAS and plan on building a simple pit for DCS:A10 once I have some space. It would be nice to use for any flight game, really.

I'll just response by saying, playing with the rift, there is no way I could play without my X52 Hotas.

I can literally load up the game, put on the rift, put my hands on my X52 and play the entire game without ever touching the keyboard (or needing to look outside of the rift lol)

this is just to each his own though..

after having played ED I have to say I couldn't be happier with how they geared the game to the X52, its like putting on a well fitted glove and it just working :) - and all this out of the box

I just hopped on board with ED last night, and now I am awaiting my HOTAS joystick.. that the dealer keep delaying ETA on. So far I am enjoying ED quite a bit, despite using mouse/keyboard.

As a total noob, could someone tell me what is going on with disappearing unidentified signals sources? Once I arrive close to them, they are gone. This has happened too many times now.

Also does anyone have an idea why sometimes the Sidewinder will throttle up and down uncontrollably during landing/docking? I usually just press x and then it is reset, but I do not understand the reason for thrust accelerating (forwards and backwards) when I am clearly not pressing these buttons.

Where do I find a station with a Hauler for sale? Or is availability totally random?

You need to manually exit SuperCruise within 1000 km of a USS to see what's there. Maybe you're exiting SC well before the "Safe Disengage Ready" prompt, or you're flying past it.

Not quite random. Wealthier systems (HighTech, Industrial) will generally have more ship selection at Shipyards.

Thanks. I was 8 km from it and couldn't see it anywhere... I must have missed something.

I just found one in Aphra :D can't afford it though.

EDIT: I also found a list of systems that sells the Hauler in the wikia ;)

If you want a boxed version with physical DVD media, then yeah, wait for that upgrade option (still need to buy the digital version though, mind you).

Other than that....get the digital version now and enjoy!

Cool!

$20 for a box and a DVD in addition to the $59.99 for the actual game that you already have to D/L?

^^ These inspire an obvious and likely stupid question by me:

If someone sticks to all digital... is the upgrade/update going to cost another $20 one way or the other?

That takes the total investment to $80. Now I certainly can appreciate the investment on something like this and Star Citizen both but I want to be very clear on things. :)

I honestly don't know why that boxed copy/DVD is still in their store in the first place. Once Frontier Dev abandoned the off-line game plans, that box/dvd is only good as a bookshelf or wall filler.

You may want to clarify with FDev. But my read is that "Upgrade" is only for the box and disc. It does not apply to future content packages or expansions that FDev plans for later.

So the good news is you only have to spend $60 instead of $80.

This game is only sold through them? They don't have a publisher?
This should be on steam at least.

Ah, self/crowdfunding. Nice.
Ironic how there are 2 high end PC space simulators and still nothing from any big publisher.

Oh now that's fucking cool. I hear there are a few bugs though so I am going to hold off until the patches come out. Don't want my CMDR save getting bugged or anything.

Nah, not ironic. Simple matter of risk v. reward, and the risk is too great for this niche genre relative to the cost of building out a persistent universe type online game. Publishers go where the money is and ADHD console kids don't care about sims - space or otherwise. As well, a big publisher couldn't just leave development open ended and string people along for years - which means they'd have to invest the money and actually get some form of shippable product out the door. Minor difference.

And really there is only one high end PC space simulator - Elite: Dangerous. Because Star Citizen is just a ship buying simulator preying on nerds with power fantasies, and won't be finished in this decade.

The publishers/studios will revisit space sims if
-SC, ED, No Man's Sky, etc end up make gobs of money.
-they want to capitalize on licensed properties (Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar, etc)
-someone thinks up of a Freeemium/P2W model for space-sims a la World of Tanks

But I'm convinced anything the studios produce will be 3rd person perspective. And that's simply not a space-sim to me.

The game still feels very BETA, but 1.1 certainly addressed some of the more pressing concerns. Route plotting at 1000Ly and sorting of Equipment in Outfitting.

And yes lot of people are getting a cartographic game crash when returning data. I returned 3 pages earlier today with no problem what so ever.

I have now set out on a 16K journey and take it that they fix this bug before my return :D

I hope the big studios take a cue and refrain from giving us 3rd person space games. SC has certainly shown the industry what kind of money can be had if you cater to people with real incomes.

Neither could be called a simulator, and I'd say "catering to" rather than preying on... nothing wrong with a power-trip fantasy though, as thats almost all of gaming.

Heck, I go on power-trip fantasies just listening to epic orchestral music where I imagine myself armed with a massive belted machine gun with an RPG strapped to my back riding a T-Rex rampaging through San Francisco to clean the gene pool. :D

How is this game?
Watch gameplay videos and see if it seems fun to you. If you look hard enough, you can find a offline training demo.

How does it control with a M&K?
It's workable but you will get more enjoyment (and it would feel natural) if you were to purchase a HOTAS controller. If you are on the fence about it, get a budget HOTAS such as the Saitek X52 Non-Pro.

Is this single player only?
It has 'multiplayer' as well. You can do almost all the stuff offline if you truly wish.

finally bought this about a week ago. Wondering if others encounter endless CTD's. I can play for 5 mins, maybe 30 mins maybe more, but inevitably there is a CTD and i send my error report to the devs. Google'd and found this to be a common problem, but it always seems to happen right when im getting into something good.

I had one or two CTD's since i started playing in Beta. So many times is definately not common i would say.
