I am looking for a 6/8 port Sata PCI-E Raid/Controller Card to put into my main rig.

I have my bottom PCI-E slot open. I have a Thermaltake RC1600101A MAX-1562. I want to put in Six Sata 3/6GB SSD's. Today I will be 3x Micron M500DC and 2x M600 and a Samsung 1TB Evo for OS.

I do a fair amount of VMware workstation, running a things like two or three copies of VMware vSphere, and or or two of Server 2012 R2 at once for testing and blogging.

Raid would be a nice option, but not necessarily a requirement, as long as the throughput is good.

My Host OS on my workstation in my Sig is Server 2012 R2.

Recommendations?

Thanks. Anyone else have any recommendations? The IBM is a little higher than I would like to spend on newegg.. I assume I would need the advanced license? would I want to flash it to the LSI firmware?

I see http://www.scsi4me.com/ has it, and you can pre flash it.

Do either of the options require forced air ( like a rack server has ) to cool or will a power case like I have provide enough cooling?

I run a 9211-8i in a regular desktop case and it doesn't overheat.

In my experience all the LSI 2008 and 2308 chips get too got for the passive heatsink in quiet cases. It's easy and cheap though to buy a quiet 40mm fan to attach to it.

Yeah I wouldn't run any without a fan. I have a 1200rpm 120mm fan running at 7v and it just lays on top of the PCIe cars, and then is zip tied down. Any airflow is more than ennough, no airflow at all and they just run real hot. It might be fine... but it makes me uncomfortable.

+1. Note: I'm one of those silent-PC nuts & do not use an auxiliary fan.

In fairness to my situation, I have it in one of those Rosewill Thor cases and there's a decent size fan in the case side that blows fan across the interior.

You could fit a small goat in my case...
