Will this card fit and is it a smart upgrade?

Looking to put this card:

MSI R9 280 GAMING 3G 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

In this case:

Cooler Master HAF 912 - High Air Flow Mid Tower Computer Case

Mobo is an Asus M5A97 R2.0, 600w PSU

Any advice would be great, probably playing BF4 and CS:GO mostly on it.

Cheers

R9 280 is 10 5/8 inches.
CoolerMaster states the HAF 912 can hold an old HD 5970 which was 12.5 inches long.

You'd probably need to rearrange the HDD cages.

You should inquire about this aspect in the computer case sub-forum.
I just looked up the case on newegg and went from there.

Upgrade from what? Surely that sig cant be current. If it is then the modern gaming world has passed you by long ago and there is no point in a modern video card with that cpu.

Yeah that CPU would be over a decade old. If anyone is playing new games on that, they really had no idea what they are missing

Better off replacing the whole PC or buying a XBox One / PS4 at that point.

I used to run two EVGA GTX 480s in SLI in my old HAF 912. There was plenty of room. I would imagine that the 280 can't be much bigger. The 480s were huge cards...

Yikes, A64 4000+? That case is the least of your worries at the moment.

Throw in a CPU upgrade while you're at it or don't even bother. Your board uses an AMD 970/SB950 chipset so it should be good for a far more modern AMD chip. You could do a lower-end FX chip coupled with an R9 265X/270. You may be running BF4 at really low quality settings, but it would be better than nothing.

How much $$$ do you have to spend? Your budget is definitely need-to-know at this point.

Thx my apologies, how about the card? Pretty solid? Reviews ive read so far sound great

It's a decent GPU, but your current CPU is going to be a nasty bottleneck with newer games like BF4.

Don't put the cart before the horse...upgrade your MoBo, CPU, and RAM first. Even if it means sticking to a very constraining budget and getting a Haswell-based Celeron or Pentium dual core.

You cant be serious trying to upgrade your gpu while you have a 10 year old single core cpu. Have you been living in a cave for the last 6 or 7 years as your system was not suitable for any real gaming even back in 2008. Heck you cant even run youtube videos smoothly with that system.

No I have a new cpu sorry haha the sig is old except for the mobo, just updated ram and mobo and cpu a year and half ago

Signature is up to date my apologies

SYSTEM SPECS DESKTOP:
.: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 :.
.: Crucial 8GB DDR3 :.
.: AMD FX6300 Black Edition :.
.: Geforce 6800 256mb :.
.: Eagle 600w PSU :.

Lol wow you really did hang on to that 6800. Even modern integrated video will run rings around that.

I would not get a 280 or even a 270 with that PSU especially if it has some years on it. It only could make a max of 264 watts on the 12v line even when new. And that rating was probably not even at 50 C as the label sure does not have much detail.

Thanks for updating your Sig.

What price is the MSI 280 that you are looking at?

Ha yea I havent gamed for ages really, is there a cheaper graphics card that would run csgo flawlessly? Thats really all I wanna play I have bf4 for xbox one that is fine...

The msi 280 was like $190 on newegg

Go back and look at what I said about your psu. You stand no chance of safely running a 280 with it.

Yep, the 280 has the best performance at that price point.

I agree with MrBobby...your PSU is "rated" at 36A total for both +12V rails combined. Push a bargain PSU to its limits and it will fry, and likely take out some other things with it, like the MoBo, CPU, and/or GPU.

I understand I would need a new psu if going with the 280, for now lets say I didnt want to upgrade the psu but just find a decent card I could rock CS:GO on with the PSU I have?

You could get a 750 ti or even plain 750 if you can find a good deal on either one.

Global Offensive isn't a very demanding game. I think I remember seeing a benchmark chart not long ago that listed Very High or Ultra settings at 1080p with a $130 750ti with framerates in the 90's.

Yea I thought it wasnt too demanding... probably gonna aim for the 750ti for now and maybe get a new psu anyways for the future

Is this your PSU? I think it should be able to handle a R9 270 or 270X. My 270Xs when mining took serious work to break 130w. The 270 consumes even less power but is still noticeably quicker than a 750 Ti for just about the same price.

Again that old psu of his was only rated for 264 watts MAX on the 12v line and not even at 50 C. He would be crazy to use even a 270 with that psu after years of use. It probably cant even make much more than 200 watts on the 12v line at realistic temps at this point.

Eh you're probably right. I take back my 270/X recommendations.....and recommend he upgrade that piece of junk too while he's at it. :p

Power supply only been in use about two years now, still gonna browse some corsair models

When I built my sons CS computer I had a 8350 OC and it still wasn't great. I got him a 2500k and put it to 4.3 and it maxed it out.(the video card is a 6850)
The game seems to be cpu bound more then video.

Surely you are not saying an oced 8350 cant maintain 60 fps in that silly game. I thought people with old Core 2 cpus were even getting 100 fps that game.

Get a 750ti and a highly rated Cooler Master V550 or V650. Both combined should be right around the price of the 280 you were asking about.
