LSI 9260 Temperature?

Where can I find the temperature of the card itself? Drive temps are reported in MegaRAID Manager, but I cannot for the life of me find anything that can tell me how hot the RAID-on-a-chip is.

Is that something which is only shown in the MSM log as needed (aka overheat)?
 
If you don't have a fan pointed at it, it's probably too hot.
 
Even after a patrol read operation, it was easily touchable when I removed it to reinstall the ghetto-rigged fan I had cooling a PERC 5/i.

I would think that "too hot" would be "physically uncomfortable to touch" but if that's not the case and it has a really low thermal threshold please let me know. The documentation suggests maximum ambient is 44C (BBU present) but says nothing about the chip itself.
 
I went through this recently with my 9271-8i in my home server. I am still new to the raid card segment, but doesn't the 9260 have the same WebBios that the 9271 has?

Ctrl+H on bootup.

If you go to controller properties, it should state the card temp.
I had to do some cooling enhancements to mine as it was idling at 62c and got up to the low 70's when building the VD.

That aluminum heatsink they have on there is a joke. I looked for some replacements and found a few northbridge copper heatsinks I think would work. I decided to see if i could save some money first and replace the TIM that was on there with some GC Extreme I had laying around. I also mounting a Noctua 40mm fan I had to the heatsink with air blowing onto the heatsink. These changes lowered my idle temp by 21c and the temp when rebuilding the VD was lowered by ~28c.

My server is actually very quiet. The only fan I can hear is the side panel exhaust fan, and that is only because of the fins on the side panel causing turbulence.
When I unplug that fan, I still can't hear the 40mm fan.

I still may upgrade the heatsink to a copper unit, but as of now my temps are below the 55c max that LSI has set for my card. I haven't looked up the 9260, but I would imagine it to be similar in temps.

I appreciate the detailed response, however, it is not the case that there is any temperature monitoring in the card's WebBIOS. I also cannot find any specifically stated "maximum temperature for the card's processor" (only ambient).

My PERC5/i was cooled by a fan literally tied to the bottom of my case with spare wire. I will leave this in place for the LSI card I guess.

The heatsink is actually fine. The card is built for high airflow rackmount cases.
That is why there is no fan included, the card has a TDP that cannot be passively cooled with a heatsink of that size.

Yeah, I know what you mean about them specifying the "Maximum ambient temperature" as it is kind of vague. I just take that as the max temp for the card. So, it looks like 60c unless you are using the BB's, then it would be ~44c.

Have you tried using a laser temp gun? That may just be the most accurate you are able to get to with this card.

Yeah, I knew that going in, which is why I ordered that 40mm fan before I ordered the card, lol.
I used to have a 42u rack downstairs, but it took up too much space for our basement and the wife was a little too happy when it left. Although I have toyed with the idea of doing something much smaller just for the convenience..

I am currently using a Bitfenix mid-tower for my server and have all 8 3.5" bays populated with 3TB HDD's. Even though there are a couple of intake fans in front of the HDD's, I didn't think there was going to be enough air flow for that card. Even with an ambient temp of 66f.

My main thought for installing the copper HS, which I still may do, is just simply because.....it is better! Why leave anything alone with you can mess with it, right?

Assuming you use Windows and are running Megaraid Storage Manager, if you click on the "Physical" tab, and the highlight the controller, the right side window will show properties of the controller and it has a listing for the chip temperature.

Mine shows 67 deg C when it's doing nothing, and goes up to 95+ deg C when running a disk benchmark on the RAID5. This is with a 9265-8i which is similar to yours. My 9361-8i runs at about the same temps in another computer, but both have pretty good ventilation. Mine are pretty much toys though and don't run under load most of the time. They run hot as hell when I do load them, but I've never had problems with them.

That's weird, maybe the 9260 doesn't have a temp function.. Just get a small fan pointed at it if you're really worried about it. I don't know how you would swap the heatsink to a better one as mine appear to be epoxied on.

Sorry for the necro-bump. I found this thread because I was searching for information on checking the ROC's temperature.

I have been on a mission to quiet down my htpc/server for some time because it sits under the TV. Took me a long time to find a heatsink that could be cut down on the width but had the exact same length as the stock. I found the sink a couple of months back and today i found the time to make the modification. Before this I had an 80mm fan blowing at it.

The heatsink came off a dell xps 630i motherboard.
