24" Widescreen CRT (FW900) From Ebay arrived,Comments.

If I'm interpreting his "NO! It is not normal" declaration above, however, I think he's also saying that the green hue is not normal even during warmup. Because, I had said that I remembered the green hue and therefore would assume it's normal.

Uncle Vito, if it's not normal, and yet goes away after warm up, is it a problem or likely to develop into one?

All hues/color casts on CRT are indication of functional issues and they may develop into large issues if not diagnosed/repaired on time.

There is a workflow for diagnosis of a CRT with hues/color casts. Gun(s) and tube emission must be checked at the same time, and depending on the results, you may have a high usage tube and/or a bad tube.

NOT ALL THE HIGH USAGE TUBES ARE BAD UNITS!!! They will be classified as B (+/-), C, D, or F rated, depending on the tube's testing results.

btw i'm not sure but i think after i did a wpb adjustment, my fw900's tint became less green and more greyish

I will get some screenshots tonight of my tube on startup and then following a 30 minute warm up, so I can get some more opinions. If it is a problem, I would like to go ahead and address it before it becomes a bigger one.

My recommendation to you is for you to test the tube and the guns for integrity. If the tube and guns check OK, then perform a WPB and check the level of adjustment in the IRE 100 pattern on the first pass... Report back the results...

Thanks, Will do. I will report back. Also, is there any way to check the hours that have been put on the unit?

There is no way to check the hours but you can estimate the usage when performing a WPB by checking the level of adjustment on the IRE100 pattern during the first pass... You need to have the proper equipment and the instrumentation to perform this process.

There has been plenty of discussion of the f520 vs fw900 in this thread. Please do us all a favour and use the search function.

quick question. I have a small amount of paint missing on my FW9011. Is there a way to color match an exterior paint to touch up this otherwise flawless case.

Need paint match for a tiny spot on bottom. I cannot believe I landed this unit $150 and the antiglare was completely flawless. I threw in a few pics of the tube and images after warmup.

I think you should sell it to me for $160, and you can profit!

in what order were the sony monitors released? i think the artisan came after the f520 but what about the fw900?

the blacks in those pictures look amazing.
it's weird how lcds should have better ansi contrast than crts, but in practice dark scenes look quite bad on lcds.
i guess it's related to the backlight uniformity/bleeding, viewing angles, and how lcd's blacks are bluish

The new line of Premier Pro monitors were released as follow:

A) GDM-FW900 replaced the GDM-W900 and it was released in October 2000. Some early models were out in September, but the bulk of the first batch hit the distributors in October,

B) The GDM-F520 replaced the GDM-F500R, and it was released the same month/year,

C) The GDM-C520 was released in September of 2002, and had two editions: the GDM-C520 without the Artisan Color Reference System (CRS) CA-20, and the GDM-C520K which included the CRS,

D) The CPD-G520P looked like the GDM-F520, but had different chassis, different tube & FBT, and A1 board. They were released in September of 2002, and I have a prototype with 2001 date on it.

Also, Sony built a hand full of custom made 24" Sony Artisans and I have one of them.

Hope this helps...

The G520P was my 2nd all time favorite CRT next to FW900. It had a high contrast / punchy output while maintaining very sharp focus.

well given that they include dvi-a to vga adapters with the cards... who knows

were the fermis the last cards with two analog outputs?

I was wondering if anyone had experience setting up a bias light for the FW900? What would you guys recommend for a budget of under $30ish?

What are your impressions of this 24 inch artisan, compared to the FW900? Any chance we could get a photo?!

Maybe some day I should open a gallery of vintage equipment... I have many prototypes and unique pieces of hardware including some Sony monitors, which I am sure most of you would love to see...

I'd love to pay your and your lab a visit. Sounds like CRT heaven to me. :)

great idea, jbl and I were thinking something similar. Say, 10-20 years down the road, if our CRTs are still in good condition, we could have "viewing", where people can come see great monitors in action :)

by then, there'll be young adults who have never seen a CRT before, and it could be mind blowing :p

Could be. But I really hope it's not mind-blowing in the sense that image quality is better than the contemporary monitors of twenty years from now. :(

CRTs are so objectively superior. But you do realize that 95% of folks who walk in to such a place won't even notice and/or appreciate that superiority. They're just going to say: "They're so big! I love my flat TV!"

Which is why we're stuck where we've been for over ten years with current display technology. :(

Maybe if such a place had LCDs side-by-side with CRTs in a light-controlled room, the point might get across. But even when I have been able to do that and show my wife and a few friends, they just sorta shrug. I believe my wife even might have uttered "meh." :D

I've shown my FW900 (by itself, not next to another display) to a number of people in light controlled conditions with a variety of content that allows it to really shine. Many of these people have never even seen a CRT in action before.

Most of them really do appreciate it, but a few people just clearly have no interest in displays to begin with and their reactions are of the "meh" variety :)

OLED monitors should come in couple of years... They're gonna be superior to CRT
Yes. If the technology survives against ultra-cheap LCD. I think/hope it will. But I've been disappointed before (FED/SED). But, there's a thread for this. ;)

Most of my friends are either good friends and they're lying to me :)D) or they really do love the image quality. Actually, my brother in law was kidding around with me and making fun of me for using these old CRT's still. My buddy jumped in and said "have you seen the picture quality on these things? They kick the crap out of LCD." Well said, well said...

EDIT: And to note - most everyone who's come over and seen my tubes in action all think they're amazing. All I do to give them a demonstration is show them some good high-res images from flickr and some of my wedding photos. A good friend of mine got a demo a couple of weeks ago and remarked at how nice the blacks were. Even in a well-lit room, my F520 and Artisan look great. FW900? Not so much, but that's because of no antiglare. When I dim the lights - it becomes a whole different animal. :D

Oh please don't mention FED/SED. When I think about them, I just want to cry (exaggeration of course, but still). We would all be in a better place, display-wise, if they had actually come to market. :(
