$7.5 billion for BlackBerry? What in the world is Samsung thinking?

Executives from the two companies, which are working with advisers, met last week to discuss a potential transaction, the source said, asking not to be identified because the conversations are private. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said in a statement that it "has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry.

Seems like a good idea..Samsung makes good phones, BB has some useful technology and patents. It would be nice to have access to that again on a platform that isn't stuck dreaming of the early 2000's.

Because every business wants BB's back-end fit their business but no one wants their hardware.

Samsung hardware with BB back-end will almost 100% guarantee government contracts.

Maybe the brand is worth something? And maybe QNX? Otherwise, they're really overpaying.

Blackberry denied it...

So...

Confirmed?

I think you've misplaced a decimal point though. Sure BB has valuable patents but $7.5billion? Why not just wait for them to sink and snap them up cheaper? It's not like that ship is going to stop sinking any time soon.

dammit. Whoever keeps tabs on shit like this makes such easy money.

If you bought the stock this morning, and sold before closing, you would have made over 30% profit

I think it is the deals that BB is making with the car industry, honestly. Just think about the new Ford system alone.

The patents are worth at least that, and Facebook did pay $19 billion for WhatsApp, so presumably Samsung would get an amazing deal considering BBM would be part of the package.

Afaik, BB has a ton of good patents. I'm sure they're worth 7.5B and apparently Samsung is too.

Unless Microsoft actually puts forth an effort, BB is the only phone maker with real Enterprise integration. I think there is value in the company, not sure if it's 7+ Billions though.

I wish Microsoft would do more and make their phones work more securely in business.

Samsung wants out of Android and BB also has a pretty good mobile OS. Seems like a perfect match to me.

Car industry deals, enterprise integration, patents, patents, patents.

7.5 billion looks like a hell of a bargain to me honestly. Seeing BB only as a consumer product would be short sighted.

BB has over 44,000 patents. More than what Apple currently owns. They're around the 40k mark. Also, BB has the only infrastructure that has a direct connection to every carriers. Think about it.

That's what I've been saying since BB hit 6 bucks. Everyone says they are dead but if you look past their handset market they have a lot of tech that is only starting to be realized by their competition.

Technically, i think there's a direct connection between Apple and every carrier that has iPhones. The number of people using RIM devices has been dropping precipitously since the Hero first came out and the proliferation of Apple devices has made it worse. But Google only cares about the Patents. If I worked there, this news would send me running towards recruiters (if I wasn't already talking to them).

BB likely also has something they can use against Apple. Makes that 1.05Billion judgement look like child's play.

I almost guarantee that they will remain on course with their push to iOS as Apple is an American company. BB being Canadian is close enough. The move to Apple would neutralize the chance of foreign government back doors.

RIM makes bad cell phones, BUT their network services and infrastructure for corporations is second to none. Apple and Andriod are way behind on this, and this is where the $7 Billion pricetag is coming from.

Is it overpaying? Maybe a little. But i can see where Samsung is coming from I am not surprised.

If BB had patents to use against Apple/Google/etc - don't you think they would have already gone done this road?

A while back there were similar rumors of BB selling. The government of Canada said they had a say in this - they either gave tax breaks or invested money into the company. Would assume this is still true.

The problem is only the patents are worth anything. All their car industry deals just like their handset business is probably going to erode over the next couple years. Same with enterprise integration.

BB is only worth money to keep your competition out of their patents.

Sounds like what Google tried to do with Motorola...look at how that ended up.

Yes, their tech is still far ahead of anybody else, especially for very sensitive critical situations. This is with backend syatems, it doesn't make good press. The string of high level executive clowns they had really hurt their marketing potential for the front end (read: handsets) however. The passport is actually a fantastic work tool, though not really a consumer item though IMO.

Will see how this turns out.

7.5 billion seems excessive but with luck, it might sink samsung!

Not excessive for what they would get.
Also Samsung has 327 B in yearly revenue, 7.5 B represents less than 3% of that number.
I don't think that's going to sink them.

BUT their network services and infrastructure for corporations is second to none..

their enterprise services were not that good, more like they were the only option.

MS is quickly grabbing market share thanks to exchange and lync.

No, not cash wise. But breaking away from android could be disastrous. Then again, that might be the right move getting away from android provided they can actually make the cellphone OS worth a damn.

I was personally going to get a galaxy s5 but I decided against that since i hate having their preloaded garbage on it.

They are not likely to abandon android more likely to port services over so they can support galaxy and knox

Yup, Samsung is forever committed to Android on their mainline phones in the West. They could go the Blackberry 10 way and implement an Android emulator, but they can't officially support Google Play without hacks, and not all Android apks are free-and-clear of the store.

And they already have their toy OS Tizen to waste time on, so why add QNX to that pile?

Just a few years ago, this would be absolutely unheard of to think these two kings would merge.

Kind of like saying that you would be playing Sonic on a Nintendo console back in the 90's.

i wasn't following this. what happened?

1. Aquire huge and popular brand name cellular brand name for $12.5 billion
2. Attempt to sell popular name under new ownership. Its a crapshoot
3. Give up and take patents away from popular cellular brand name and resell brand to Lenovo *formerly IBM* for $2.9 billion
4. Profit?

No, Samsung wasn't the king of smartphone hill "a few years ago." It was not until after the impressive release of the Galaxy S2 in late 2011 (which sold twice as many as the Galaxy S) that they took the reins officially from HTC. It's amazing how quickly the world changes :D

Speaking of quick world changes, Blackberry also has gone from the top to the bottom in just 3 years (2007 to 2010, been dead for at least the last four years now). They've been quietly spending the last three dealing with the pre/post release of Blackberry 10/ BlackBerry Tablet OS, and trying to breath life into the dead husk.

It would be far more fitting for you to say it would be unheard of for Apple and Blackberry to merge, as Apple was the company directly responsible for their fall from grace.

The BB Passport is the best phone on the market.... if you want to play games get a Galaxy or iDiot phone. If you've gotta hammer through 60 or 70 emails a day and need the best connection possible you get yourself a BB. The reception on the BB alone is worth it.
