so i thought I got a good deal on an i7 920. I'm running a 6850 c2d and thought an overclocked 920 would be a nice upgrade at a price i can afford. I won the ebay auction for the chip. so i started looking for motherboards. surprise! x58 motherboards are going for way too much. there goes my good deal. I can't afford much right now which is why i was building on an older platform.

there are a few motherboards in my price range that have bent pins. How difficult is this to repair? Is it worth a shot? anyone do this successfully? anything to look out for? when are pins too bent?

To fix bent socket pins, you will need very good lighting and very steady hands.

I have had to do it a couple times and if you are not careful, you can break the pins pretty easily.

I personally would not bother buying a board with bent socket pins.

Here is an Intel DX58SO motherboard for $120.

How much did you pay for the 920?

You can run the 1366 XEON chips and get a hex-core for pretty cheap if the board supports them.

I agre with cyclone3d with the lighting and hands. I would also avoid buying one with bent pins.

If you are going to try, a mechanical pencil with the lead removed is a good tool. I may have also been known to walk into a jeweler to have a 4P board fixed.

That said, I have an ASUS P6X58D Premium collecting dust if you are interested.

crafty sir

I have done this.
Tools: Needles, use both ends. Cut the tip off the eye and it gives you a gripper.
A loop, so you can see those tiny things.
Digital cam, snap some macros and it will reveal which pins are off.
You may need to straighten, snap, inspect, repeat several times.
Patience and a steady hand. Unless the pins are totally trashed this can be done.
