I told Kyle I would make a thread showing off the GTX 980 I won in the recent contest and I'm a man of my word. It's taken a few days because of work and other obligations. I have only had a chance to play a little bit of Watch Dogs and Far Cry 4. I have spent most of the time overclocking it and that's what I'm doing right now (using my secondary computer to type this).

I picked the Asus GTX 980 Matrix because I don't plan on using water cooling on the card so the Poseidon seemed a waste on me. It's a phenonamel card. It needs two 8 pin adapters and a molex. I've got the fan speed at 40% and even overclocked it hasn't broken 62 degrees celcius running Heaven for 12 hour loops. I've got the core at 1388 MHz and the Memory at 7012 MHz. Both speeds are base clocks. I havent' even scratched the surface of the card.

Here are some pics:

I'd like to thank Kyle, [H] and Asus for this gift. I don't know when I would have been able to upgrade if I hadn't gotten this GTX 980.

Sweet!! Congrats, the Matrix is a BEAST!

I LOVE my two Asus 980 Strix cards, the best graphics cards I've ever owned and I've been gaming since before there were discrete cards.

An actual positive thread regarding asus cards....Finally:D Congrats on the sweet card and keep us posted on how it does over time. Asus motherboards rule them all but there cards haven't had the best reputation, but im betting when it works fine people are silent, so you have to wonder how many are problem free and work great. ;)

Also worth pointing out that ASUS is a much bigger supplier than many of the other video card distributors. So the vocal minority with problems would be a much bigger group of people for ASUS cards than any other company.

I really hope you didn't use a bunch of adapters to power the card. Abuse of PSU adapters is known to fry computers. If your PSU doesn't have two 8-pin connectors, buy a cheap Corsair CX PSU. Saving $25 isn't worth destrying everything in your PC.

The insides of your computer have been re-arranged by goblins, please dispose of him and clean up his mess.

Thank you-

I plan to upgrade my PSU when I have the money. I have my eye on the EVGA SuperNova 1200 P2 80 Plus Platinum. I am only using the one adapter for the second 8 pin, no others. This PSU handled my overclocked XFX 7950 which according to the [H] Review used 167 watts more than the overclocked Strix 980 so I am not overly worried to use the adapter for the short term. My stance on adapters is that if your PSU doesn't have the cables you need then buy one that does but I also didn't plan on winning a GTX 980 when I did haha.

On a related note I have the memory clock stable at 8000 MHz from the stock of 7012 MHz.

That much power I think would be wasted on your computer. You could probably get away with a 650W PSU even with that overclocked FX-8350

I know it is far beyond what is needed but my thinking is to keep the PSU at 50% usage or below. Granted I had been looking at the 1300 Watt when I was using the 7950, since the GTX 980 uses less wattage I could get away with less but I figure if I have double my wattage needs the PSU will not be as stressed and run quieter.

Nice man, congrats! To 1500 core, and beyond!

That's my goal :) I plan on doing some overclocking tests on the core later tonight before bed so it will run while I sleep.

So did you have to use the molex power or just the 2x 8 pin power?

My PSU only had one 8 pin so I used one 8 pin and a 2x molex to 8 pin adapter. My other option was using 2x 6 pin to 8 pin.

As a coworker of Simmonz , I can safely say our entire store is jelly-ous :p

Congrats again good sir, well deserved. Haters will hate lol

That's probably the best looking video card I've ever seen. ASUS really knows how to make them look cool.

As an asside to a previous comment on ASUS card's quality, I have never had an issue with one of their video cards (or motherboards). I've had lots of problems with powercolor (won't buy them anymore) and a problem with a sapphire card dying in less than a year (warranty replaced) and a Club 3D card that died in less than a month (retailer replaced). I've come to the realization that buying the cheapest possible video card with a given GPU is not a good idea. Buying from ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte is a much better plan if you don't want to deal with a bunch of returns (can still happen of course).

Well I have the core overclocked as well. I got it to 1450 MHz, boosts to 1474 MHz. I haven't increased voltage at all. At 40% fan speed it hasn't gone above 67 degrees celcius. I think I may be able to get more out of it perhaps but for now I am just going to play some games.

I have had good experience with Asus. I like how I can set up an RMA online without calling them. I have done numerous RMAs for customers with them without any major issues and the one personal RMA I have done with them they replaced a motherboard that they were well within their right to decline any warranty work. I have good things to say about MSI as well. The two times I have had to call them to get an RMA done the call center was in Texas not in some obscure country that doesn't speak English. Club 3D has gotten better since they opened up a warranty repair center in the U.S.A., used to be I would have to ship customer cards to The Netherlands for repair.

The winner of our ASUS Choose Your Weapon Lucky Draw Giveaway has, as promised, posted pictures of his prize in the forums.

In other words...

The winner of our ASUS Choose Your Weapon Lucky Draw Giveaway has, as promised, has rubbed his new +$500 video card in our faces, reminding us that we are all losers!

That's just not possible. Haven't you read here that all ASUS RMAs are crap and everyone gets screwed?????

Asus has been great to work with whenever I've had to RMA anything. In fact when I RMA'd a rampage IV extreme (they replaced it even though it was my fault) they sent me an entirely new retail packaged board.

It's closer to $700 than $500.

While I am not a huge Asus fan I did just buy the 980 Strix and should have it in today.

To the OP, congrats its awesome limited card!

I found it on Newegg for $650 USD which is about $770 CAD thanks to our crummy exchange. Makes me all the more happy :)

Congrats on the win.

Side note, Asus RMA is good, I deal with them frequently because my company uses a lot of Asus laptops 500+ at my location alone. Not 100% certain on the non-business to business side of things, but in my experience it has been ezpz.

That is a nice OC. I've had a lot of Asus components with no problems. Their laptops had some issues (cheap power adapters, keyboard stopped working and my ROG laptop had sound all the way on or off n=2.)

I don't care for how they usually gimp the DCIIs but I guess they want you to buy the higher end cards.
