SlingTV was introduced today.

Dish is launching a new service today called Sling TV that will make live cable TV available in a subscription-based package for over-the-top viewing. The service, which will cost just $20 a month, is designed to appeal to the throngs of broadband users who for whatever reason don’t want to pay for a big cable package.

Sling TV features a dozen different live TV programming options to choose from at launch. To make it work, Dish negotiated rights with major media companies like Disney, Turner, and Scripps to create a light package of networks to flip through.

The crown jewel of the bunch is ESPN and ESPN2, which will be streaming over-the-top to non-cable subscribers for the first time. But the channel lineup also includes the Disney Channel, ABC Family, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Adult Swim, TBS, TNT, CNN, and Cartoon Network.

Also missing are broadcast networks ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. According to Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch, that’s because most consumers are able to find programming from those networks elsewhere — like on Hulu, for instance. They could also just hook a digital antenna to their TVs as an alternative.

Sling TV is not available yet, but when it does become available, you’ll be able to subscribe online and watch through a number of devices. That includes iOS and Android mobile phones and tablets, as well as Macs and PCs. But it will also be available on a wide range of connected TV devices, including Roku set-top boxes and Roku-powered TVs, The Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick, the Google Nexus Player, the Microsoft Xbox One, and LG and Samsung Smart TVs.

ESPN is the most watched cable network. That was a big get for them. Only thing missing for a sports junky like me is the local sports channel.

yeah comcast sports, nbc sports are the only thing left.... which is what almost all MLB games are on

so they just need to get MLB.tv without blackouts and it is the golden ticket...

getting closer for sure

If only it were not from DISH. I had a bad experience with them several years ago. I vowed never to give them another dime. Maybe another vendor will offer something similar down the road.
(I know we all have horror stories with companies. I hold grudges and have issues getting over past experiences :) )

Getting closer, but you watch the ISP will interfere.

Rather from throttling, data caps, or whatever. In the end if all that doesn't work then they will just jack your rates up to cover the costs of losing you as a tv sub.

Lastly if you read carefully it is for ONE viewer. So they are trying to still gouge you for each access point, just wording it a different way.

The one viewer at a time is going to be a killer for most households. It's rare that we're watching more than one TV at a time so it would work for us.

I'll only get this if I can install a "plugin" for windows media center... as I don't want to have an external device... all my movies/tv/etc... is done from my media center interface. So if SlingTV has a plugin for that, i'm golden. I'm not interested in buying a roku or some other device... I also want the ability to record locally (what if the internet goes out?)

I am kinda meh but getting close. I only pay 40$ for my cable TV which has 100+ channels. Don't rent a DVR box or any equipment. If I can keep paying around 80-85$ for 50/5 internet and cable TV, I will keep for now. Lets see in 10 months if TWC will play ball on keep rates after promo rates

I'm pumped for this. My wife and I love HGTV. Even if you don't like these offerings, it is hopefully going to lead to bigger and better devices and cheaper - more customizable TV plans.
