Games like Skyrim or better?

I wouldn't recommend the dark souls series. I played it before skyrim and the melee combat system in DS is so superior that it will ruin you for other games. I can't play skyrim now, combat is just terrible.

lol so true..

its hard to play any fantasy type RPG after Dark Souls (it actually got me to buy a PS3 just for demons souls)..

To the OP.. if you like skyrim you should at least give dark souls a try, it might be different but its really similar only on an extreme level (very little hand holding, you can delve into the story as much or as little as you want).. and your choices actually make a different (if you choose to kill NPCs or how you interact with some NPCs, its going to mean something and effect the rest of the game)

With Skyrim, I mostly just did random stuff until I was getting bored with the game, then started to main-line the story.

Turns out, I was still kind of bored with the game, so I stopped mid-way.

Dark Souls is enough to even make Inquisition a tiny bit frustrating. I kept wanting to dodge the shots from the slower enemies, but you can't.

Sooooo... Dark Souls... Yes, as far as this series goes, I've been living under a rock. For some reason it never really presented itself to me, and I never started following it. By the time I started peeking in on threads here, it was a bit late in the game. I just figured I'd write them off. The videos bits I've seen on Steam make it look more like an action-fighting game than an RPG, so that didn't help much either. (I do love Bayonetta, but DS looks like this sort of game, (almost) with a dark fantasy skin...) Or maybe Enclave style. (I actually liked Enclave a lot...) I'm probably WAY off base with that, and really should try to find some real gameplay footage.

The reason for this post though is really to find out just how RPG this series is. Obviously it's got action to it, and I'm totally fine with that. However, I haven't seen anything in the way conversation, quests, towns, interaction, etc. Does it indeed have these RPG elements, or is it pretty much raw fantasy action? This wouldn't necessarily put me off from it either. I just need to know what it actually is, so I can decide if and when to play it based on my gaming moods.

Since it's come up in a thread about Skyrim-like games, I'm assuming there's more to it than I think.

Just want to know if I should give it another look.

I'm into all forms of RPG really, but I go through phases. I like open world TES style, I like overhead looting Diablo style, action style System/Bio/Shooter/Shock style, DA style, whatever. I'd say the biggest RPG influences for me though were the mid to late series Ultima Games. So, whichever category Dark Souls falls into, I'd probably like it at one time or other. Just need to time it right. :D

if I were to rank it at least for my play style its 75% action 25% Interaction..

its not going to have anything like the Alchemy of Skyrim or anything like that or the open towns..

its brutally difficult but has a pretty deep Lore that you'll have to seek out for yourself through the sparse NPC interactions and the Items and descriptions you find along the way..

Its open world in that you can go where you want "if" you can make it.. and it in no way has a big sign that says "Do this First".. instead you go off and die quite a bit..

The side quests are there and you may not even realize you are doing them except for the fact you've seen this person before and you'll try your hardest to try and remember what he was attempting to do or how he fits into the story..

I guess the best way I can describe it is imagine a world where people are "lost" and you are the one that intertwines with their path as you go and your choices and how you interact with them determines where they end up at the end. And the last thing i'll say is what you think is good may be bad and what you think is bad you may have wished you chose differently at the end :)

I loved skyrim and I put off Dark Souls just because all I really heard about or saw about it was how hard it was.. but once I got into and the story it just sucks you in.. and hten you break your controller because of how hard the game can be..

@H-street - Thanks! That helped a lot. I think I can fit that in somewhere.

This. I always have a copy of Morrowind with MGSO 3.0 installed. I always find myself going back to it.

I just installed Morrowind last night in preparation for loading the MGSO today/tomorrow.

I'm also re-playing Oblivion and Skyrim (I alternate based on mood) at the same time after Loading major mods on each.

I've always thought Oblivion was a better game than Skyrim just because the scenery is better (In my case, "better" doesn't necessarily mean more "graphically realistic") I just like the brighter, more vivid colors of vanilla Oblivion when compared to vanilla Skyrim.

Dark Souls is tough to classify. It's part RPG, part adventure game, part fighting game, part horror game, part Ninja Gaiden/God of War game, and it's unforgiving as all fuck.
I think people that like any of those genres might like it, and they might just as easily hate it, too. It isn't for everyone, but every person I've met that likes it tends to become borderline fanatical about it. It's hard not to obsess over it.

Dark Souls teaches you to be patient and observant. Drop your guard/attention and even the first creatures in the game can kill you after you're powerful enough to complete it.

DS1/2 are easily the greatest games I've ever played (since starting in the 80's).

Skyrim's colors are extremely washed out, for sure. I've always used mods to add to the vibrancy of it.

However, while Morrowind can appear "washed out" and very gray, I don't mind it, as it's part of the atmosphere and general aesthetic of the game.

As for Skyrim being "buggy". It really isn't that buggy once they released a bunch of updates. Pretty much never had it crash the last time I played it through.

also not unlocking the FPS seems to prevent the physics issues, like going into a room and stuff randomly flying around or being in the wrong place.

which is a shame but it is what it is i guess

There are still a few bugs in regards to the FPS thing...Before I played with locked FPS stuff would go flying like you say but even after locking my FPS I still see it from time to time...

I hit a Thalmor Justicar with an arrow a couple days ago and, from the angle he was ascending when he winked outta sight, I'm pretty sure he'll land in Hammerfell sometime next week.

Definite +1 to modded Morrowind. Great memories.

Fallout New Vegas! Yeah, I know you rather play in times before guns, but this is the real deal.

Fallout 3. If you like Washington DC

Divinity 2: Developer's Cut or it's prior dragon knight saga iteration is a worthy mention. I kinda wonder if the original Divinity 2 release kept people from finding out how much more refined the newer versions ended up being.

Kingdom of Alamur is good for a try too.

Another random mention that might hit your sweet spot:
And even if you are more of a serious gamer who would rather play in the pre-gunpowder days like me, you might still be surprised how fun Saints Row 4 is and how it fulfills your requirements a bit more than you might expect. Maybe start with 3, but that one doesn't quite have the "super hero" thing going on.

I read that, and thought, "Surely you can get it for $5 on Steam." Took a look, nope, still $20. Though it looks like you can pick up a physical copy of the GOTY version on Amazon for $10. I still have my GOTY box, I don't think I'll get rid of it ever.

I got the GOTY edition of Morrowind for $5 on Steam back in mid-2010 ;).

I'm still waiting for OpenMW to be completed so that I can do Morrowwind with a widescreen monitor. As for getting Morrowwind on Steam, put it on your wishlist and wait a while. It goes on sale from time to time.

My favorite was mammoths falling from the sky, quite a sight and funny when they die from it.

Yeah i forgot 2014 hasn't been a great year for games, but one can hoe that some dev will realize that people want a game like that.

Completely disagree with 2014 not being a good year for games. 2013 I was looking for good games to play in January, this year in January I have a backlog of 4-5 games I want to finish - not because I got bored with them, but because I just don't have the time to finish them all.

The only games I see that are really interesting to me coming out this year is Witcher 3 and maybe GTA:V and definitely no proper RPG with character customization that I know of.

I saw that happen when I was walking the stairs to high hrothgar. I turned around to take a screenshot of the nice view and there was a mammoth plummeting towards earth like a Malaysian Airliner

i enjoyed the super giant smashes that would send things into orbit.

I agree completely. Skyrim is gorgeous, but Oblivion had the better feel to it IMO. It had the dark Oblivion areas to contrast the bright and beautiful landscapes. It felt more like a classic Ultima-style setting. The change to Skyrim was cool in general as being a bit different from those classic settings, but it just seemed to wear a bit thin for me after a while. Oh look, snow! Oh... look... more snow... :D I'd like to see Oblivion on the Skyrim engine with some updated assets. If I remember correctly, someone was doing something like this, but can't remember for sure.

I've had zero crashes in Skyrim. Oblivion used to crash all over the place, but I've had very good luck with Skyrim.

I appreciate the Dark Souls info to all the people that replied. Think I'm going to pick them up. The difficulty isn't off-putting to me, and I have several controllers in case I throw one. :D (though I tend not to to that...) So my next question is, should I start with the new edition of the first one on Steam, or should I just grab DS2? I usually play games in order, but sometimes it just doesn't matter and the newer game is preferable.

I would just buy the first one now, there is a new version of Dark Souls 2 coming out on April 3rd that will include better graphics, more NPCs etc.. and will most likely include all of the DLC.. (we dont' know yet how much of it will be free to current owners)

for the new version some info here http://www.pcgamer.com/dark-souls-2-scholar-of-the-first-sin-announced/

Dark Souls 1 has all the DLC included and with DSFix you can boost the resolution to a proper 1920x1080..

Perfect. I think that's what I'll do. Thanks!

Skyrim is such a great game. I have over 500 hours on my Steam account for Skyrim (2+ playthroughs myself, and a few friends/family who played on my account as well). Lots of games I think of as being similar - not sure how many of these you might consider. You've probably already played Oblivion, but if not that's an easy choice. In a lot of ways it's even better.

The Witcher games are both amazing, and TW3 is coming out in a few months. I'd definitely give those a try. TW3 looks like it will have a lot in common with Skyrim, being more open-world than the first 2.

If you want something to kill even more time, you could try Kingdoms of Amalur: Reconing. Some of the designers from the Elder Scrolls games made it, so the quest and character systems have a lot of similarities. Unfortunately the game is inflated with a lot of grinding, duplicated quests, and an artificially gigantic map size, wich all make the game a lot longer and more boring than it should have been.

And while not set in the fantasy realm like Skyrim, I would definitely recommend Far-Cry 3, Blood-Dragon, & 4 as being similar in open-world game-play, and with similar character developement and quest systems. If you like open-world RPG's and also like FPS game-play, can't go wrong there.

Lastly, I just started playing Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, and I am loving this game so far!! I never liked AC games before, but I like games with pirates, so I gave it a try. AND IT IS AMAZING! It has a lot in common with FarCry3, and has a little more of that historical feel than FC. I'm over 60 hours into AC:BF at the moment, and still have a long way to go.

OP...Look at my handle name.

Trust me when I tell you....If you enjoy variation from ES games and like a challenge you 100% owe it to yourself to play Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. Oblivion and Skyrim were in my top five favorite games of all time...until I played Dark Souls.

#1 - Not playing a game because it's frame locked is a terrible reason not to play a game, I'm sorry. Don't let those sucktittie whine bags convince you otherwise. Dark Souls and Dark souls 2 are about gameplay and content. I was always bashing dark souls (before I played it) that it looked like a game from 2004.

#2 - If I had to venture a guess, the average gamer will take at LEAST 50 hours to beat Dark Souls. Unless you're just really good and rushing. If you like to explore and experiment? It will easily take you 100 hours. My first character has 144 hours on it and I'm just into NG+. Why? Because I explored every nook and cranny and had an absolute blast with it.

#3 - Dark Souls is hands down the better series over ES with regards to replay value. I have replayed Oblivion once and Skyrim once and kinda got bored on both playthroughs and that was over a span of years after release. Dark Souls? I was on my second and third character after beating DS and DS2. The replay value is SO expansive because of how the weapon class and game mechanics work with varying characters. In ES games...changing character classes/styles has far less impact when it comes to playing the game compared to Dark Souls.

#4 - Some will argue that it's not a story based game. Yes and No. The lore is deeply rich and while there's minimal dialog I find myself far more intrigued with the story than I do with other games.

#5 - Sidequests and content. Dark Souls really doesn't have a single "side quest" or piece of loot that's worthless. So many games (ES games included) have empty content. Quests that will get you some gold or something else totally trivial and worthless. In Dark Souls, there isn't such a thing. Every weapon, shard, armour, shield etc is unique and has a purpose and fits a certain character. There's not really filler. The environment is so deeply rich it's astounding.

Nice post but I think he already agreed to get DS a few posts back ;) I agree though.

I was sold already, but they sound even better now.

all this skyrim talk got me to install it last night... holy crap the ordeal getting mods installed... but the results... i spent around 12+ hours installing mods and ended up with crashes and then spent another 12 hours resetting them up and finally got the game working right without crashes.

I was thinking also in trying skyrim for the first time. I did play oblivion back in the days. So what mods do I get?

I would do all the visual mods first, and then make sure the game is crash free then backup the whole data folder before doing gameplay mods so if you screw up installing some of them you can just disable the non visual mods and then copy the backed up data folder back without having to reinstall all the visual mods again. saves a lot of time when trouble shooting conflicts not having to start from scratch every time.
