So without Xbox Live connectivity, the Xbox One is useless? Does the PS4 do this?

I just bought a Xbox One and as we all know, some hackers took down Xbox Live yesterday so I couldn't login to Xbox Live. However, I couldn't login AT ALL... I don't know if I am missing something here but how is this possible? I mean, I try to launch GTA 5 but it can't load or save games while Xbox Live isn't active. I go to launch Netflix, and I can't launch Netflix without Xbox Live even though my internet connection is working just fine. It is weird I can't even login to the console locally or something... Are there no local saves on the console? I mean, I understand it probably cloud saves, but how can that be the only place it saves to? I figured that if the internet is down or Xbox Live is down, I could at least save locally and then once reconnected to Xbox Live it would resync the saves? I mean, why does Netflix have to connect to Xbox Live? Even my damn pins aren't there unless I login.

Does the PS4 have the same problem? Like if the PSN isdown you can't use Netflix or save and load games?

PS3 has issues with Netflix when PSN is down. I believe the current app requires a connection, but some versions have allowed access after the PSN connection fails.

I believe the consoles need to connect to their respective services at least once before you can play offline, much like Steam.

I have both and both were worthless yesterday but gaming on the PC was awesome and worked great as always! :)

I can't answer about the PS4 but my PS3 was working with Netflix yesterday even when PSN was down.

I had trouble connecting to xbox live but amazon prime was working for me as well as the NHL network.

Xbox live on Xbox one and 360 gave me zero issues after 4pm CST yesterday thru now but PSN is just fucked. Nintendo network worked fine for me as well.

Um. XBL was down for the entire day just as long as psn was down. Trust me I checked on my end. When xbl worked, I quickly hopped on psn to play destiny and it worked too.

That's because you don't need PSN for third party apps.

My PS4 has been offline since yesterday. This is getting to be a real mess.

It's a good thing I have a few single player games, but seriously they need to fix this B.S.

Update - Figures, Farcry 4 won't play because UPlay tries to log in immediately. Stuck at load screen for 20 minutes. Haha

Yes but remember, this is basically by regions. When you're offline , someone else can be online.

Not the whole PSN was down. The Network Hack seems to affect a majority of us but not all. It seems to me spotty.

Ah, I see. I'm western Canada so I guess we aren't affected as long. I played a bit of sunset overdrive and then hopped on to my ps4.

We are looking to get a PS4 and didn't realize the whole thing is tied to PSN. I figured if PSN went down at least we have a media player. Does plex work?

This is sort of like Sony getting hacked and you can't watch TV. That doesn't happen yet, right?

Your right I'm lying my son and I were not playing destiny at all yesterday from 4pm till 1am on both Xbox one and 360 I'm just making it all up.

I'm also lying that I've been completely unable to redeem my Ps store cards I got but I had no issue redeeming and using my Nintendo cards.

God I'm such a liar

Don't know how I unlocked these yesterday

I had no issue with Live after 5PST yesterday either. Didn't even know something had happened until today

My son got a Xbone for Christmas, due the outage he couldn't sign in and download his Unity voucher. However, he was able to play the new CoD game (which I had digitally downloaded for him the night before) on his 360 and played mulitplayer online (however he couldn't join his friends ingame lobby). I thought that was odd, and am thinking because the 360 was downloading his new game all night he was logged in before everything went down.

Good job on being a wise ass.

If you read a little further , he was corrected.

Unless there's something I've missed on my PS4 don't buy it to use as a media player. Right now there is no way to play movies/music/pictures off of a usb device or through your network. I still have my ps3 hooked up for media functions.

Amazing how PSN is still down, everyone I know is reporting same.
This is just insane.

Is there no offline mode for XB1 and PS4? I thought there was in the previous versions...

Of course there is, at least for the ps4.

Netflix works, YouTube does not, single player games do work unless they require a log in.

Plex will be available soon for the US PS4s. Not sure about USB play (who even uses that?) but the DLNA will work fine with Plex.

Like I said in the Plex for PS4 thread one caveat there is (I think) it's tied to Plex Pass for the time being. I signed up for Plex on the Xbox One for a monthly basis to try it out till Feburary.

It should be the same way for the PS4 version so correct me if I'm wrong. It's a pretty big deal to have to sign up for a subscription went saying something has been released.

*note* it's only a subscription until Plex releases the final version and get out of beta phase much like the Roku, chromecast and every other version of Plex.

Sony's response from a couple of hours ago.

"The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.
From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.
If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.
Thanks again for your patience."

The askplaystation twitter account has been saying the exact same message over and over. Its pretty annoying. I'm on PSN right now playing destiny but its spotty to even get logged on.

Actually Xbox Live was down for about 12 hours and PSN was down for 3 days and even now is still troubling users with login issues.

There is no question which network is superior frankly.

If you put your Xbox One in offline mode it works just fine. Not really a big deal..

So me playing destiny the past three days was all a dream? And xbl being down for me for over a day was also a lie.. Interesting.

It may have been down elsewhere, but I was on and got my eris bounties in every single day on psn.

And yes XBL better have the superior network considering they've milked their consumers for so many years with XBL gold. I was playing sunset overdrive until psn was up 3-4 days ago.

milked? I don't think so. LIve has been remarkably stable through its lifespan and part of that is that MS has been investing in its backbone. yes they charged gamers for it as a service, but they have also been providing that service in a reliable manner.

True, if it is possible to completely defend against these DDOS attacks somehow, both companies should invest in whatever technology or people are required to do so.

I have PS3, PS4 and XB1 systems and to be honest, the Xbox Live is the better service for me. I have experienced constant headaches with the PSN service. The PS3 though has been the best in terms of open media device. The PS4 and XB1 lock most of the media services you can use. Also, I have about the same experience with offline play in both PS4 and XB1. There just seems to be a lot of general FUD in this thread, but I expect that anytime there is a problem with either XB1 or PS4.

I'm saying that they have the superior service because they've been funded by the consumer for the past 10+ years. They better have Better infrastructure than PSN who just started really requiring sub's to play online for the most part.

I've never had any problems with psn outside of the ddos garbage that affected both services. XBL however is more stable when it comes to ddos. I have both systems and subbed for 2-3 years on each already.

I would suggest a petition or something to both MS and Sony, I am sure this could be turned into a lawsuit, as you bought products and could not use them due to MS and Sony's infrastructure they do not properly manage.

That's like trying to sue the government cause a highway is closed due to an accident or traffic jam on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend. It's silly to go that far due to outside interference affecting service.

For me xbox live was working again by noon on Christmas but psn was still down. I was able to play a few matches on my xbox one on the 25th but 2 of my friends weren't able to play their new ps4 online till Sunday evening and one still says it's still wasn't working at all last night for him.

And PSN was down again for many users tonight. Its getting frankly absurd now. Sony has to do an infrastructure upgrade. For the kind of money they are getting out of the user base this is unacceptable.

Yeah, thats what I've heard as well. My brother told me PSN was down and not to log out of my current game if I wanted to stay on. Now that Sony is getting everyone to pay for their service they better friggen beef up the damn infrastructure. This is unacceptable for taking peoples' money and not letting people play.
