Love my Phanteks but curious what the best air cooled heatsink is out right now?

TC14PE is till one of the very best.
As for quiet, the new Macho Zero is silent and uses a duct from cooler to back exhaust fan to move air though the cooler. Many reviews are showing it as good as the best, but I suspect that is more because it removes all of cooler's heated air so none of it is contaminating cooler intake air and heating it up.

Not even in the same world as top tier coolers.

And there are many others now that are just as good and better for same or less money. They were good deal for several years and still not bad. But others now their competitors ace them out.

If you want silent, then you should go fanless. Have a look at this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1740852.

That is exactly what I have been looking at. I am ok with case fans as mine don't have any real restrictions.. when the CPU fans push air quickly through hte heatsink it creates a lot of extra noise. I am really debating it but also need to know if the 2nd PCIE slot in my board is a true 16x or is it hte one all the way at the bottom which I cant do.

EDIT: Looks like it's the 2nd one is good to go so the CR-95C Black Pearl is a possibility. Now I just have to convince my self to go back to stock clock lol

I'm assuming water-cooling would be out of the question? If you can fit a good 120mm (240mm would be better) AIO you could probably make it pretty quiet. Just get some silent fans for it.

No, I have yet to hear a pump that was silent. I've had a few Corsair units and those damn things made some annoying noises.

Thermalright's new Macho Zero has no fan. It has a exhaust duct that uses the exhaust fan to draw air through the cooler. Performance is quite good.

I'm quite happy with mine. Very quiet as I have my case fans controlled by CPU temp so whole system idles at 600-700rpm and only hit's 950rpm under load.

Yeah, this might be the way I go.. my case fans run ~400rpm with fanXpert controlling them and can go up to 1,500 but Ideally they will never seen over 1000rpm. This might be the cooler I go with. My 4 case fans are all Noctua 140 Redux running off the CPU header already. They are much quiter than the CPU fans.

Ok, I am sold on the Macho Zero and about to order.. but what about thermal paste? I used Liquid metal pro last time and was HIGHLY impressed but also worried about it bonding my cpu to my heatsink from stories I have read. What is the best paste out right now? Every site shows somethign different.. I read Tuniq TX-4 was good *shrug*.

My current stuff on hand is some Noctua NT-H1.

I have no idea how it compares to some of the other brands, but it seems to do the job well enough without costing a whole lot. I mean, it's Noctura. What could go wrong, right? :p

I just picked up the Gelid Extreme stuff.. I read it's very good and seen others confirm it.

Thermalright supplies Chill Factor 3 which is quite good. It's what I use for testing. I test more Thermalright than anything so have more CF3. See no reason to spend more on something else when it's one of the best. The difference between top pastes is less than 0.5c .. except for liquid metal TIMs .. which are extremely expensive and hard to get good seatings.

If you must buy, than Gelid GC Extreme or Prolimatech PK-3, but for less than half a degree it really doesn't matter. Margin of error in testing is at least twice as much, and accuracy is based on margin of error before actual temp readings anyway.

I picked up the Gelid.. didn't know the paste with the thermalright was that good lol. Live and learn.

I hope the Macho Zero comes with the 140mm Air duct.. they are not very clear on that. I ordered one on Amazon.. wish me luck!

Great cooler. I have the Extreme version. Performance is the same below 1300rpm .. and unless I'm playing with overclocks it never runs above 1200rpm. ;)

I was on the fence about the extreme version... Was worried about noise levels. Glad it worked out for you.

I have several of the TY-143 fans. They have the same noise levels up to 1300rpm as all other TY-14x fans. Even on an open bench test system at 2 meters I can't even hear them until they are over 1000rpm. HDDs makes way more noise than they do.

The TY-14x fans are as good or better than Noctua NF-A14 & NF-A15 fans at same rpm

And have same blade design

Cancelled my Macho Zero order.. guy could not confirm the air duct it came with and I could not find a place to order one.. Might try the CR-95C afterall..

That's a drag. :(
Just looked and it from Nan's Gaming Gear. They give no info about the duct and show it as not included with cooler, and have none available on their website.

The CR-95C is really not not really much good. Any of the bigger coolers with no fan will match it. Use a fan at idle is virtually silent (11-12dBA) and will out-perform it by several degrees. For example TRUE Spirit 140 rev.A with the new TY-147 A fan idles at 300rpm. I can't even hear it with my ear right next to it. It has great RAM and PCIe clearance too. Footprint is 78x155mm with fan, is 69mm center CPU to side nearest PCIe socket and 53mm center CPU to front of fan. Most PCIe and RAM sockets are that far or farther away from CPU.

Advantage of big coolers is you have silence .. and if you do decide to do something else later and need more cooling they will do it. CR-95C won't .. and they are also cheaper.

I would have used the Macho zero if I could find the air duct piece i needed. I cant find anyone else who sells it

The CR-95C smokes the macho when both ran passiveb
passive. I cant find a review that compares them both uing case fans. Seems like the cr-95c has the potential to run cooler with some airflow from the case fans. Silent pc review showed it kept the i7 965 cool without any fan.

Did you look at their second test chart? 11-12dBA is well below normal ambient noise level. Most places around us have an ambient noise level of 25-30dBA. This means we don't hear anything with a noise level below about 18-20dBA the level of a whisper. At 11-12dBA even a TRUE Spirit 120 or NH-U12P is 16c cooler than CR95C .. 10dBA is what someone's breathing sounds like 10 feet away .. and human ears needs a 3dBA change for is to sound louder or quieter. Can you hear someone breathing in a setting relaxed in a chair 10 feet away?

Silent PC was testing on an open bench. In a case there would be air movement and noise from the case fans, so even if the airflow from case fans isn't enough to keep CPU cool, you won't hear a 10dBA fan running on the cooler anyway.

Also the Macho as used in their testing was limited by setting flat instead of on it's side as it would be in a tower case. On it's side it would flow air by convection much better.

But we dont know how well the 95c would cool with case fans. I just see assumptions. I remove 2 case fans if I use it.

I would have gotten the macho zero if I could find it in stock with the air duct. How can there only be one guy selling it???

Nan's is the only US seller. Thermalright sells a lot of product in Europe and Asia, but not much in America. They are trying to increase their market share in America, but it takes time.

The CR-95C is not designed to cool with much air movement, so will not improve as much as other coolers. It s rated at 95w, which is rather low. Most powerful CPUs are over 95w and can be 130w. If they are overclocked they can get as high as 300-400watt. 3-4 times as much heat as CR-95C can cool.

Also the Cr-95C is 180mm in diameter. That is huge and will most likely cover at least the top PCIe socket and be over the top of RAM. While it has 4 heat pipes, they are only got one way out of heat block compared to most 4 pipe coolers having pipes going out both sides of block .. which almost doubles their cooling ability.
I have cooled 130w i7 920 passively with older macho, but it would get up to about 80c on warm days when rendering graphics. Which is extreme work load for CPU, but with a fan spinning 660 rpm the temp was 55-60c. I've done similar with TC14PE, Silver Arrow variants, NH-D14, and others with similar or better results.

I'm sure a mid to upper level cooler with a fan running a low speed will out perform the CR-95C .. and reviews show this to be true.

Having a cooler that makes 0dBA noise really has no meaning when we can't hear any difference between it and one with a fan making 15dBA of noise in a house where the quietest room is 25-30dBA.

It's like the question, "If a tree falls in the forest does it make any noise if nothing hears it?" We can say yes it does, but have no way of proving it. :D

Strange because I have seen many thermalright coolers in the us even at local stores. Its just this one that seems to be hard to get. Can Nans get the ducts?

I just talked to a guy who is running the cr95c on an overclocked 4790k at 4.4ghz and no case fans. Must have a cool ambient i guess.

OK doyll i got the macho zero and found the air duct! Hope your right and hopefully I can keep my OC?

nans had them. I guess he just lisyted them as I did not see them before.
