LSI 9211 hates SSDs?

So I picked up an LSI 9211ir and hooked up a pair of Sandisk Ultra+ 256gb SSDs and noticed performance was pretty terrible (9MB/sec average, peaks of 600MB/s but mostly 0MB/sec) and they were constantly timing out... tried a pair of 840 pros and they did the same thing... all the SSDs had their firmware updated, LSI has the latest firmware also... am I missing something here? tried different breakout cables, I know the SSDs work fine because when I hook them up to the onboard intel controller they work just fine...

tried a regular spinning disk on the card and it benchmarked perfectly normal and operated fine, no timeouts etc :confused:

anyone have any ideas? suggestions?

What OS? What exact version of firmware does "the latest version" mean?

Many people have reported that the most recent firmware (P20) has problems with high performance drives on Windows and Windows-server (and perhaps other OS). Try flashing it back one rev to P19 and see if your problems go away.

8.1 P20

I will try flashing it to P19 and see if that makes a difference

I can only comment on the 9211-8i in IT mode and it works very well with the 840 Pro under Linux.
Although I did not upgrade the fireware for a long time.

P20 works horribly with SSDs. P19 doesn't. I learned this the hard way with 2 systems of mine. I was able to downgrade one but the other is having issues with running sas2flsh in DOS. Next up, I'll have to attempt to downgrade with Linux on USB.

I have some SAS SSDs on mine (well, it's a flashed M1015) and it works admirably. Firmware is a few years old however.

blew away the flash and installed the P19 BIOS & Firmware

getting 1GB/s 2x sandisk ultra+ 256gb RAID0 :D

Glad it worked for you. One more datapoint confirming P20 sucks rocks with SSDs. If you have a 92xx series LSI card - stay at P19 or older.

Wow - I'm glad I came across this... I just finished setting up a new storage box and had flashed it to latest (P20) and was just getting ready for testing... I would have seen crappy performance but would have assumed it was something else rather than the controller firmware..

PigLover - do you have a link for any further details?

Thanks

How are you testing.

I have an LSI controller with some ssd drives. Kinda curious what I am getting.

I guess I'll be checking firmware when I get home too :)

I haven't used P20 myself, still on P19 when I did my last round of updates.

But I have helped and diagnosed several people running P20 with horrible performance, and P19 or earlier have fixed the issues.

was using ATTO disk benchmark

also gave me same terrible performance when flashed to P20 IT mode

Is there a way to get the ATTO software to output text?
