Hello,

I bought a 5820K a few months ago. I'm not a huge hardware guy, so I just throw things in and if it works I'm happy. But looking at it more closely now, it's only reporting it has 4 cores instead of 6 in Windows as well as CPU-Z. Did I get a "bad" CPU or something? It's reporting itself as a 5820K, so it's the right CPU at the very least. The motherboard is a Gigabyte X99-UD4-CF.

If anyone could shed some light, that would be great. Thanks!

check in BIOS the amount of active cores.. there you should have a option to select how many cores you want to use.

Didn't even know there was an option to select the number of cores used in the BIOS. It was set to auto, but I manually set it to 6 and it still shows 4 in Windows.

I probably don't have the latest BIOS. I actually had to exchange this same motherboard because the first time I got it I tried to update the BIOS and it bricked the motherboard. First time it's ever happened to me, so it makes me a little worried to try it again. It might come to that though.

I know it's a crazy proposition, but are you sure you bought a 5820k? Was it retail?

Can you take a CPU-Z ss?

It was retail, got it from MC. Not crazy at all, at this point I'm up for any suggestions :)

It's got to be the board. You did re-install the OS, right?

Updated the BIOS and still have the issue. The OS was going to be my next question. I just took this SSD from my old machine with an i5 and plopped it in here. No good?

That's the issue right there. Sometimes windows doesn't pick up the new number of cores properly so you have to do some extra work.

Some recommendations (make sure you are running as Administrator):
- Run MSConfig -> Change to Boot tab -> Advanced Options -> "Number of Processors", make sure there is no check mark.
- Delete processor entries listed in Device Manager, then reboot and allow Windows to redetect/reinstall them.

You beat me to it :D

I just had this same issue with a Xeon x5660. I upgraded from an i7 920 and it was showing 4 cores. I couldnt figure out why until I checked under Msconfig.

Im still wondering why people install new hardware without a fresh install of Windows. Maybe Im old fashioned though.

Well it depends. If I'm simply upgrading some components but sticking with the same board and chipset then in most cases there's no need to fresh install.

If I'm switching boards and going to a different chipset then it's a very good idea to start fresh.

Another method you can use to narrow down the issue is to download Ubuntu desktop and install it on a USB flash drive. Then boot off the flash drive and use the OS on the USB drive to see if Ubuntu is picking up the same information as Windows.

At the very least, it will help to narrow down whether it is an OS configuration issue. I always keep Ubuntu on s spare thumb-drive because it eventually ends up being helpful.

Windows can be fairly robust. My Windows 7 started out on a Phenom II 965. It then went to a 1090T. During the 1090T, I went from the nVidia 980a chipset (due to SLI 275s), to 790FX, then 890FX. Then I went to the i7 920 obviously with x58. What eventually forced me to nuke my installation was a nasty virus that somehow got embedded in my desktop.ini, and after removing it, my system was never the same. Never had to uninstall old drivers (though I did it anyways), and never had any issues.

I like that. It somehow got infected. It might have been the adult websites! :D

I usually do a clean install every now and then. I don't have anything that is hard to redo.

Somehow i have the itch to go check my cpuz now incase my windows decided to ransack me. Just built my new machine last week however I did a fresh install of windows 8.1 but re-used an old ssd that i formatted/deleted my old windows 7 on to use as storage now only AFTER, even as a secondary drive it shouldn't affect anything right?

Pretty sure the admin on the site I think I got the virus from had the username Hagrid.
