Intel SSD 730 480GB @ $199 - Newegg AM shell shocker

Ungh. We got one of these for a server at work and it's great. I wish I had it in my budgeting for some of these and a SATA III card for the home desktop. The pair of Intel 160GB SSD's are getting full of steam lately.

This, and a pair of 4TB HGST's to go along with it with the SATA card.

... and a new 290X for less than $300.

... and Steam sale.

... point being is that I have a small computer component budget.

Are these the best ~500GB SSD's out there? Better than the Samsungs? I wonder if I could get $80 for my Samsung 830 256GB.

Lol. I just had one of my 2TB Samsung F4 fail, PCB kicked the bucket, or I'd probably order another one for me, but I'm gonna grab a 4TB HGST drive instead.

The Samsung 850 Pro is still the speed king, but these are also damned fast, only behind them a little bit. This drive is an Enterprise class, so it has no power saving features but it has power failure protection.

I'm running 3x 730's in my rig. I had the OG Intel Pro 60's before that lasted 5 years. We run Intel's in all out client PC's. They might not be the speed king, but they are reliable and last.

Samsung can be faster. But I doubt you'll even feel the difference in real-world. Intel, especially this model of drive, has the endurance to last a long, long, LONG time. Years of full-disk writes per day.

Yeah that's something I highly value. I love the idea of including capacitors in order to prevent corruption during possible power outages.

I just bought one. Considering 2, but doubt I'll ever need that sort of speed.

Ugh I want, and the 20$ gift card could be used by my lovely lady for her photography stuff. Do I really want to spend 200$ though?

Bit the bullet on two. These are really nice drives in terms of performance consistency, from what I've read. I've been wanting to demote my old Intel 330s to a lab environment, couldn't justify spending the money on Black Friday though.

These keep hitting this price and I think they will continue to do so. Really what we need is a discussion of where SSD prices are going. I wonder if they will drop after Christmas. I passed on this twice holding out for a Samsung 850 pro or a sandisk extreme pro but I missed the good sales on BF only got one of the sandisk extreme pros for $204 wish I had bought 2.

Don't put this in a laptop kids.

This will/is becoming the norm price, but the reason these are [h] is because they are enterprise, and have great write endurance.

I think I just totaled out with 8 of them (need to add up my orders) and a new LSI 9300 MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i (LSI00416), wondering what kind of IOPs READ I can get with various RAID setups and off-loading logging to separate discs, lots of testing coming up :)

Wouldn't mind snagging 2 more for my workstation to replace these aging M4s, but just can't justify it since they're still rocking.

EDIT: They cancelled some, looks like I'll have a total of 4. Not going to snag 4 more after doing some math vs going with the new PCIE SSD, the vcontroller I can keep using the drives should last until the pcie 3700 is in :D I hope

Its not always about getting the fastest drive out there, its about the reliability and reputation from a solid company that probably has the last amount of hardware failures compared to all other SSD manufactures. Even the Samsung EVO's (I know, different class compared to 840/50 Pro) had the slow read performance issues with old and stagnant files. A lot of us can live without the encryption and power saving features that Samsung has to offer.

I got this SSD from newegg for $188 shipped, including sales tax. Just used the Visa Checkout discount they were offering at the time.

MX100 offers hardware encryption, it depends on what you need. If all you are doing is using this in a desktop, I would always count on Intel being more reliable than Crucial.

THe MX100 is a fine drive, but it's not in the same class as the 730 so comparing isn't really fair.
But you can compare them on sites like ANAND SSD Comparison if you want.

As was said the reliability of the intel and overall endurance these things are in it for the long haul.

And, FWIW, I put 2x512gb MX1000 in my parents computer works fine so far (couple months), and I personally have a Crucial M4 going strong a couple years now, I've got some older SSD I plan to sell they are Intel G2s, still rocking from day 1 and going strong too. Some other Intel drives still going strong too. They were never the fastest but they never let med own either.

Is this better than the MX100 512gb I just bought?

Yes, the Intel 730 is faster, but Intel generally isn't that price competitive on their higher end SSDs. The MX100 is a great value though in overall price but the recent drops on the 840EVO and now this drive make it look a little bit less of a value.

The biggest shortcoming of all the popular mainstream Crucial drives (M500 and MX100) is their lower seq Write speeds. While you won't notice this in most applications, there are a few that do show their weakness, especially once you start looking at RAID0.

Some examples:

Large file transfers (ie games or RAW movie files) from another fast storage array. I sometimes rebuild or add to my main SATA array, so writing to and from other SSDs, I do notice the difference. One Samsung EVO (~500MB/s) for example has nearly the same write throughput as 2xMX100s in RAID0 (~600MB/s). Actual throughput is ~450 for the EVO and 500 for the MX100s.

Writing uncompressed video, in real-time. I like taking large FRAPs movies of gameplay footage, but it would be similar for anyone who is recording RAW data footage. The extra write speed does help slightly here also.

Well, the 240GB model is at $160 right now, but the 480GB model went up to $500, so much for being normal price after the 'sale'! :p

Yeah, and NewEgg is a total bitch to ship to separate addresses... 1hr+ dealing with these headaches. In the end I'm wanting/needing 10-12 480 of these 730s..., hoping to see them drop again!!

25 off 100 from Google Checkout & Visa CHeckout was a great bonus :D

So, if anyone has any extras I'll pay $225 shipped for a NIB Intel 730 480gb. Probably wanting 2-5 more, 2 FOR SURE.

I got my drive today. It didn't come with the $20 credit for photo prints. It came with a $100 off $160 wine.com certificate.

Not exactly what I was looking for..

I got WInfe gift certs too, but so have all my recent NewEgg orders. And the 2 drives from Nov came with hats, 3rd from Nov came with nothibng.

I wasn't aware or looking for a PhotoPrints discount, and can't tell if you're serious or joking... if you're serious PM me, I've gotten ~8 boxes in the last week from NewEgg so maybe I have one of those $20 off prints for you.

I know this is kinda odd, but if you wont use the Wine.com certificate can you send it my way?

My wife loves wine, and I love saving money. ;)

Regards.

*UPDATE* NewEgg cancelled another order stating that you must "verify the transaction with your CC company". This CC was already on file with NewEgg and was used to make a purchase a couple months ago. (This was a friends order.) and the CC had no pending verifications/holds for transactions. It would appear they're making up reasons to cancel orders from the same IP even though it was unique accounts, cc, and shipping addresses. What's sad is these loss-leaders had me upgrading & buying new server hardware from NewEgg. NEVER AGAIN will they get my money after the hassle and I'm debating returning all the server hardware I got from them!

PS:

The wine certificates are a joke in terms of having any real value.

These look like great drives by all accounts, but I see no reason to upgrade from my 840 Pros. Pretty sure my next boot SSD will be an M.2 drive like the Samsung XP941 or SM951. The Samsung 850 and Intel 730 are just completely outclassed by those (which is expected, given the price difference).

For desktop performance I agree.

SuperMicro has new motherboards with more PCIE for NVMe & Sata Express support coming to servers soon :D
