The Assassin's Creed Unity patch is a 40GB download? Why would a patch require you to re-download the entire game? Oh wait, this is Ubisoft we are talking about, that explains it. :(

We have received and confirmed reports that some Xbox One players who have previously applied Patch 3 are seeing a 40GB download instead of the expected 6.7GB download. Unfortunately, an issue with the patch downloading process is replacing the entire game instead of just the parts affected by the patch.

Well, that certainly seems to be some kind of record for 'biggest PATCH ever needed for a video game'.

Yeah when I saw the headline I knew it had something to do with reinstalling the whole game.

Why in the hell is this happening? Oh yeah. Ubisoft. And people call EA bad.

Aaaaaand...this is why I now refuse to pre-order or buy freshly launched buggy/incomplete games, no matter who the developer and publisher are. I'm not going to shell out $60+ to be a Beta tester.

There are games that I totally want to play as soon as they release, but I'm going to be waiting until probably 2-6 months after launch, because we all know by now that major kinks will be present and have to be worked out: Batman Arkham Knight, Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed Unity, and GTA5.

I've pre-ordered Witcher 3 but before that last game I preordered was Metro: Last Light, other than that I can wait until the price of a game has been reduced considerably.

While I play some muultiplayer games, most games I mainly play for the single player, and even if COD:AW were perfect, it's still not worth $60 to me for 5-6 hours of playtime.

Personally I prefer Steam's summer/winter sale to new releases, that way for the price of 2 new games I can get a dozen or more good games.

Even at that, 7gig for a patch is insane. Shows just how behind this game development was. I think it's safe to say they may have just reached beta.

There's nothing else to say. This is absolutely fucking ridiculous. I don't and would never own the game, so I've got nothing invested in this. However, that is basically the whole game. Did they revamp every art asset in the game, or are they so lazy they can't sort out which files actually needed replacing, and just drop the whole branch on everyone?

And for the post about EA above... I still hate EA overall, but they do occasionally do things right. Ubi, not so much.

Not horrible, I just bought Diablo 3 when I was on vacation in Maui, I was in a Walmart getting sunscreen and other shitty souvenirs and saw a case of games and Diablo 3 & Expansion had a $15 sticker on it (it was a day before cyberMonday not sure if that had anything to do with it), so why the F not, I'm sure it's patched to be somewhat playable. Finally install it 2-3 weeks after I get back, toss the DVD in, see it has almost 8GB of stuff on it, it loads up an installer, and proceeds to download the entire game... didn't access the DVD once more, and best of all it downloaded like 20GB of data (super awesome on my 6Mbps DSL line too!)

I understand huge patching issues, but when a ginormous hunk of the game is voice acting, and other shit that does not need patching I'm confused why these companies feel the need to make you download the whole damn thing. Same thing happened with my BiL he came over to install the latest Call of Duty, and sure enough didn't take shit from the DVD and downloaded the entire game.

Ubisoft has become a giant punchline and things seem to get worse and worse every week.
I was a Ubisoft fan for a while, but they can't seem to do anything right this year. EA has actually gotten much better.

Just the current internet scapegoat. Pretty common in the Game industry these days. Most of it is just BS and will pass after awhile.

What problems are there with Far Cry 4? I've been playing it since it came out (got it free with my gtx970) and I've only noticed a few minor issues. No crashing, runs great etc..

I don't know...I'm waiting the 2-6 months until I buy and play it, like I stated. :p

Wow, was Unity that bad and broken that they had to make you download the entire game over again? A 40gb patch is just wrong. Unless it is a developer you trust, you guys really need to stop buying launch day games as this is getting out of hand.

With my 140Mbit internet connection I almost wish I had this game. Almost.

Maybe they had massive bugs and required you to redownload the entire game. Seems crazy though. I'm waiting for this game to drop to the 15-20 dollar bin. Once that happens, that's when I'll pick it up.

Looks like they sold the beta version and now people are finally getting the actual retail version :p

They have added a shit ton of content and new features to Diablo 3 since launch, so at least there is that :)

Oh I totally get that, but when the download from Blizzard was the same size as the "total space needed" as shown on the box, seems more like the installer simply thought it was "good business" to download for most of the day rather than at least getting SOME data from the disc that was supplied.

When I bought diablo3 i just registered the key and let it do its thing. the disc is probably still sealed or w/e. Yea a lot of the game has changed since launch. The only wasted time really is installing from the disc at all, the launcher should just check the servers and grab from their instead. Why we still distribute on physical media, i am not sure.

ROFL!

Ubi$oft is the gift that keeps on giving!

While I don't care for the game, I'd be interested in a comparison of IQ before and after "patch".

I really want to play this game, but I'm def going to wait until they get the performance sorted out. I'm just glad this isn't the type of game that punishes you for not buying day one. On the upside, it's only going to get cheaper the longer I wait.

Future kids: "Pfft, complaining about 40GB patches? I wish. UbiEA game patches are like a TB."

I've had it crash once during fast travel. Even with the latest patch, microstutter and occasional stutter is still evident. Not game breaking but annoying.

For the simple fact that not everyone has blazing fast internet speeds. Hell I'm amazed they didn't put MORE media in, what's an extra DVD in a box cost? increases the total production value by 9 cents maybe?

Now I know D3 is "special' because it says you "NEED" an internet connection, but games that don't need it? The default is to still download it.

To be entirely honest, when a game has this many problems I would rather download the entire patched thing fresh vs just a patch anyhow.

Well for anyone who did download this massive *patch* does it actually fix the issues that plagued the game?

And Comcast and AT&T enjoy their 250GB/month data caps, charging $10 for every 10GB over the limit.

Um last i knew Comcast suspended that limit a long time ago, its only AT&Shit that still has them and enforces the. 250GB is their uverse service, ADSL is 150gb.

I've gotta say....I fell out of gaming many years ago and it's funny to me to see all these stories about "broken games" on launch.

It's funny because it is the direct result of the rabid men-children who want and NEED a new game from a franchise year after year. Those same people that already made up their minds from the second they finish one installment that they will immediately preorder and gobble up the next installment the following year.

Call of duty, battlefield, halo, assassins creed, etc....shitty same rehashed games year after year and people buy them year after year.

It's ridiculous. The AC franchise has been done for me since part 3. It did not need to go further.

You gamers get what you want and then you complain it's broke. How about waiting instead of NEEDING to get it on day one?

Jesus.

Fair point. I guess my first thoughts were online only games that i primarily play. I guess in the case of those, it makes sense to have discs on launch but after patch data exceeds media, might as well just sell cards with keys in them,

The problem with updating media is that they have to recall all old products and scrap them and make new ones too often for it to be worth it when physical sales are diminishing.

Could AC:U be the worst launch of a game in history? I struggle to think of another game that was bungled so badly.

I think it very well might be. The level that it has reached here is of insanity. Can't even believe they released this game. It needed another year or two it seems.
