Am I playing with people using consoles too?

Dumb question, but I'm just curious if when I play Battlefield multiplayer online (using PC) is everyone else also on PC or am I playing with/against console users too?

I feel it would be an advantage to play that on a PC with KB and Mouse...it would be unbalanced I would imagine.

will games ever combine console/PC multiplayer?...would love to see this

This would only happen if the competitive playing field were even. For most game types, PC players would have a huge, unfair advantage.

Something like Mario Kart or Street Fighter might work for this though.

you can use a controller on the PC if you wanted to.
Makes flying easier, that's about it.

Is that because consoles aren't x86?

Or are they?

It's possible (besides Street Fighter V). What I was thinking was the console and PC could auto-detect what type of HID you're using. So if you're using a KB & mouse on the PC, you'll be able to play with those who are using KB & mouse on their console. Same with gamepad controllers: gamepad on PC means you'll play with console players who are using the gamepad.

The only issue though is the hacking. Barring game hacks on the PC, it's possible to trick the game into thinking a kb & mouse is a gamepad controller at the OS level, which is outside the game's control. So it's not good for multiplayer.

You could play Quake 3 Arena on Dreamcast with PC players. Of course Dreamcast had keyboard and mouse support and even VGA support so it wouldn't have been any different than playing on a mid-range PC at the time.

As mentioned; console and PC cross-platform has been done before. Unreal Tournament III on PS3 is another example. Final Fantasy XIV does it, as well.

Generally, it is not done because MS and Sony like to keep their networks mostly self-contained. MS a little more so than Sony. It helps keep the experience more consistant. Network performance and gameplay considerations, alike.

It's because console makers and game developers won't allow it except for some rare exceptions.

It was done on a couple of games last generation. It's not that difficult.

I did it with quake 3 on pc vs dreamcast and mopped the floor. the couple matches i played. didnt do it for more than like 10 matches because you had to downgrade your quake 3 to the same version the DC ran (1.16n vs 1.17 i believe it was.) and limited to 4 players i believe .

I seem to recall it was a big marketing point with windows live and cross platform play with xbox live. Though it never was and win live died (rightfully so, didnt add anything new to the pc). As mentioned in a post Its rarely used because of a couple big reasons. PC side would have an advantage hardware and control wise. PC could run at higher res which would make somethings easier (ex: distance sniping), smoother/faster framerate, and better controls. Also as stated the console manufactures like to keep their networks closed.

Portal 2 did it with PC/PS3 as well. I bought Portal 2 for PS3 and it came with a free Steam copy to either keep or give to a friend.

ONe of games that combine console gaming and PC is Final Fantasy XIV. ANd playing it with controller is actually quite okay. At least if you are on PS4 - on PS3 it's hard to play it, due to hardware issues.

Wasn't CS:GO going to be cross-platform, then they scrapped it when they saw the pure pwn4age put down on the console players by the PC players?

I think the only time MS ever let a cross platform game happen is with Shadowrun but they dorked it all up and made even keyboard and mouse perform like a controller. MS doesn't like having arguments about unfair advantages between mouse and gamepad users.
Game turned out to be crap on the PC because of the debacle.
Sony doesn't give a shit and they allowed the UT3 to happen and it turned out fine.

There was a CS like game on 360 based on the Shadowrun universe that had pc-console interplay. The game itself was fairly forgettable, but I don't remember reading anything about how well it was received.

Second to the contained networks, this is actually a big deal from a platform aspect from Sony and MS. Basically both the ps4 and xbox one are amd x86 computers, with the mantle api exposed between all of them. So from a developer aspect it would be rather easy to at least code a game to take advantage of all the platforms with minor recompiles for each. That being said I am sure the network code from xb live, the sony network and what ever pc platform would be a nightmare from a patch level to a fairness / balancing

i think the big thing why it turned out fine is because the ps3 supports mouse and keyboard out of the box, xbox didnt. so i wouldnt be surprised if some the ps3 owners actually used mouse/keyboard. i know i hooked one up.

UT3 had server browser options for KBM only, controller only, or mixed. So it was left up to the player to choose how they wanted to play.

While I am absolutely sure that AMD is testing mantle for consoles, none of them are using it. PS4's OS is unix, based on a FreeBSD kernel and uses a custom variant of opengl. Xbone uses a custom version of Windows and DirectX, with plans to expand it to be more like DX12.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony opened up to using mantle in development, if it turns out it's good for development Vs. opengl. But based on the state of Mantle in PC gaming, where it stands to be of much more benefit: I wouldn't bet on console Mantle. AMD doesnt' seem to have the R&D resources to make it a reality, anytime soon.

Shadowrun had cross platform play between xbox and PC through a microsoft service. That game turned out to be a flop though.

That is because they dorked the sensitivity on the mouse control to be as slow as a gamepad. As I stated above, MS was afraid of having people complain it wasn't fair.

You've been here for more than nine years and you don't know about the PC master race? You've learned nothing.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 for pc, xbox, and ps2 was cross-platform multi-player. That was the last time I saw a game work across all three platforms.
