Get SimCity 2000 Free On Origin

LOL, all the hate.

I love SC2K and play BF3/4 so I already have Origin installed. I played some SC2K last night. It looks shitty as hell on my 24" monitor but it's still playable. I need to see what it looks like on my laptop. I might play it more on there than my desktop.

Now, let's see if they release SimTower for free...

I would take advantage of this offer, however the myriad problems with EA's platform make me reconsider.

There is a seemingly unending number of bot accounts attempting to add me, and then send me malicious, account stealing executables because I have valuable items for a F2P game. I report them, yet they still remain active a month or more later; this causes me to question EA's commitment to user security.

The fact that it takes, on average, 3 weeks to get their support department to respond to a billing inquiry is absolutely unacceptable. And the abandonment of their official EA forum hubs to Russian spammers and phishers makes me wonder whether EA's community managers have any semblance of competence.

Oh wait, that's Valve and their Steam platform. Thanks for the heads-up on the free game offer.

IMO a game is far from free if it requires installation or use of a game server. Reviews of Origin have been especially brutal.

An EA account is free to make. Origin is free to DL and install. SC2K is free to DL and install. Yup, it's far from free.

Also, I'm sure Steam was super-mega-awesome-perfect during it's first couple of years of existance.

Ah, yes, another ploy by EA to increase their "subscriber/user" numbers.
Hopefully no one will give into this.

Playing DA:I, BF3/4, ME:3, D3 the past few years...since I quit POE, haven't even used Steam for a long time. Still loads up each time though.

Absolutely no issues with Origin.

If the value of your privacy is zero who is anyone to argue with you?
I'm all for privacy, but these old games don't exactly have fine grained analytics built in. And while I could do without it, it's a reasonable use of data collection for a software vendor (EA in Origin's case) to want to know how often a game is launched and for how long its played. Steam and every other digital platform does it without people getting hysterical over it.

It's a trade off anyone can weigh the benefits vs a no cost full game in this situation. I don't care since I don't get spammed and EA only has very limited personal information that I gave out when signing up for Origin. Meh.

I never had an issue with Origin and its rather foolish a lot of people are bashing EA/Origin, sure EA has pulled shady practices but I'm not complaining about Origin, there is nothing wrong with it.

At least its better than GFWL and UPlay which I absolutely despise.

Don't get all the hate. The game is free. Get it. If you never play it, then you'll never have to install their app. You don't have to install the app to get the game. Thus I have about 5 games, but I've never played any of them. It's better than GOG, where I pay for games that I'll never play (because seriously playing a game in Dosbox blows).

As for OSI vs Steam, who cares? They're the same thing just different companies. what's next, I hate Apple stores, but I love Best Buy because they sell Bose and Android phones?

EA may suck, but free is free.

I've never had any issues with Origin, Uplay or Steam... Are there specific reasons people hate a certain one?

It's a dosbox game, If you update it to latest SVN build, it doesn't even need Origin...

For me, the prime motivation is, I don't want different systems for different titles. it just becomes a jumbled mess. I want all of my titles available through the same interface in the same menu system.

We had this for a while with Steam, before the competition launched their own, and it was a beautiful thing.

So, explain to me, why monopolies in other products and services are bad, but here with digital games distribution, people want a Steam monopoly.

Practically worthless to me as this is the DOS version.

I own, and still have the Windows 95 version on CD-ROM.

Mainly, it seems, as it's just for dramatic effect.

You totally win the thread! :D

Also, SimCity 2000 is a lot of fun even if it doesn't look great. I've never played it before and it's really pretty good considering it came out 15 years before I was born.

Does it run under 64-bit Windows? I have a CD version of SimEarth that I have to run in a VM since it's a 16-bit application. That's one advantage of the DOS version, easy portability.

It's a free game for fucks sake. Yea its old as shit but they don't have to offer it for free. Its a hell of a lot better than SimCity 4 or SimCity 3000. Just disable Origin from starting with your PC and load it when you want to play some SimCity.

I've never seen a bigger bunch of babies bitching about something that is free.

I don't think anyone is advocating for a monopoly. Quite the opposite in fact. It would be better if you chose what distribution channel you preferred and you were able to get all your games through it.

Specifically, I want to be able to get ALL games through my preferred distribution provider. And while it doesn't exist now, the ability to change providers (transfer games over) when a better provider comes around. What nobody wants is to have a separate distribution platform for every single producer. If you think about it, it really negates the concept of distribution platforms all together.

I think it is Z you are quoting who also said if it isn't on steam, it doesn't exist. Steam has problems, yes. But for me, it is still the best available solution. Once Amazon or or any other large company that is not a game producer themselves decides to enter arena and focus on customer service instead of vendor lock-in.

I will gladly bow down to my new gaming overlords.

I don't know, I haven't played it since Windows ME (let's not go there), I'm not even sure if it runs on Windows XP.

Even though DOS box has its advantages, the Windows version let's you play with higher resolutions, and higher speed, and better sound.

I'm playing it here under windows 64-bit... no problem at all, enjoying the game just like I remember enjoying it back in the day... only I'm much better now :)

The Windows version we're talking about or the DOS version from Origin?

I need to go dig out my old 2000SE disk. The DOS version is sluggish.

Some of us boycott EA because of their business practices, buggy and broken games, destruction of beloved game devs, mistreating employees and same old same old year after year.
The only way things are going to change is to speak with our wallets, and if EA wants to give me something free BUT I have to use their services, I pass, just so they're not getting ANY of my business.

Well that makes sense, because god knows there's a killing to be made in giving away free games and using bandwidth when people log into play those free games. It costs them more if I play only free games than if you boycott them.

That said, I just get the free games and never play them, because they're DOS versions, but it beats the hell out of paying 4 bucks to GOG for essentially the same type of games (i.e. DOS games), which I also never play.

Seriously what's all the hate for Origin about it's no worse than Steam or Uplay.

Everyone's got their chin on Gabe's nuts for some reason as if he's doing whatever he does for the good of gamers and not to fill his pockets with money. I can't figure it out either.

But yet everyone seems to forget that Steam is practically the same DRM as Uplay or Origin. If you don't think so then you're only lying to yourself. How do you think they compile data and market games on their store specific to your history or their hardware surveys?

I have at least 3000 hours combined on BF3/BF4 and some odd hours on other Origin games, remove your tinfoil hats.
