Elite: Dangerous

I've got a used X-45 that I could finish cleaning up if interested. Just need to finish putting it back together since taking it apart to clean.

If this one is dead I will probably pick up a x52 pro. The lack of twist on the stick is something I hated about this one.

I'll preface my questions by just saying that I don't see any reason why a person interested in this genre wouldn't buy both Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen.

I played the original in 1984. After seeing the Kickstarter, I didn't feel inclined to play a graphical rehash of a game that I played ... 30 years ago. In the 90's, I felt like the torch was passed on to Chris Roberts. Privateer was a fantastic game. It introduced story arcs and specific missions for credits ( in addition to the buy-low-sell-high-space-trader concept that Elite introduced ).

From watching Elite: Dangerous videos, the first thing that I noticed was that the AI flight dynamics were different ( the original had ships with specific flight characters, including side-winding like a snake... that's kinda why the ships have snake-oriented names ). The ships were very hard to fight and tough as nails. I found out that Ian Bell co-created Elite with Braben and they had a falling out, of sorts, in the 80's. From what I've read, Ian Bell was responsible for coding the flight characterstics in the original.

Elite: Dangerous forum has mixed reviews. One guy was harsh and said, "It's like a failed college project". A bunch of reviews are saying that it's not ready for release ( not enough content ). Some people say that the combat is tough as nails, others are saying that it's too easy. Some are saying that it is boring, some are saying that it's addictive as crack. Some people are trying to fly to the centre of the galactic core...

Based on Youtube videos, I liked the utility of the HUD design, the graphics look pretty. The voice recognition ( voice attack software ) is intriguing. I pre-ordered based on that. I bought:

I personally think that dividing a player base into 400 billion star systems, is a fundamental design mistake. Star Citizen will only have 100 star systems, which is the way to go.

I'm feeling too lazy to unbox the flight stick though. It has been sitting on the floor for a couple of months.

.

I think it is great for the explorer types. Like eve without the monthly fees.

Then why bother making it an online MMO? Just make a single player, offline game, like the original.

dynamic story
players can influence events in game
there is a faction change in a system right now that is 100% player driven wile the dev team "DMs"
and the devs embraced it and added in game events to it etc
cant do that offlline

only ~150,000 have stations
and they wanted space to feel big and empty
also as players find useful system the factions will push out an may fight over them

Mission accomplished it sounds like. One guy was lamenting that it took 40 minutes of flying time, just to get to his destination and that was within one sector. He said that he ended up figuring out why people were laughing at him, at Sol.

What's with the hate? It sounds like you haven't even played ED yet...

This happens in every official game forum.

These recent posts have me confused. i was under the impression that ED was an MMORPG like Eve Online, except with first person flying. I also, assumed I guess, that you could mine, hunt npc's for money, and kill other players for money/loot. And that their would be a massive player driven economy, also like Eve.

So is ED mainly a single player game with a few multiplayer aspects, or a real MMORPG?

its both oddly
you can play in a solo mode or private group or you can play in the open world with every one else
but when in solo your still connected to the persistent galaxy economy

Definitely not a player driven economy like EVE:

The original Elite was never about empire building. It was more like being a new immigrant to a galaxy, driving a taxi cab of limited cargo, to make minimum wage, while randomly, periodically being attacked by Somali pirates on the open seas and sometimes trying to escape gang rape of your ship & cargo.

The original was an intense, fly by the seat of your pants kind of experience, with missiles swerving past your craft and missile lock warnings flashing and sounding on your screen ( you could estimate the time to impact of the missile, based on the frequency of the sound blips - that was a nice pant-filler ). Your missiles were usually one-shot kills but you could only carry 4 of them and they were expensive ( Can I afford to use one? How many jumps are there to the next station? ) . As you fought off pirates, you would gain rankings, based on your kill count:

http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Elite_Rankings

Dangerous was the third highest ranking, which is where Elite: Dangerous comes from. I got as high as Deadly but at that point, I had military lasers on my ship, my ship was maxed out and my skills were such that I was untouchable. That was the game in a nutshell. The End. Stuff like mining, missions, bounty hunting was never in the original, so it's a work in progress.

People are asking why there are no social functions on release? One person on the forum said that there is so little MMO to the game that "MMO" should be erased from the website. At the same time, there's a major patch coming out on the 16th that adds stuff like Wingmen ( yeah they are actually going to roll a major patch on release day ).

The game looks like it is being prematurely rushed out the door, so it's a "we'll see" at this point. The fact that the game is care-bear-ish to the point that people can flip flop in and out of solo / open space is mind boggling. The player base divided into 400 billion / 150,000 stations ( does it even matter ) and also divided into open / group / solo.

Wait what? you can just suddenly decide to turn on/off solo/pvp? Surely they know that will be abused if you can do it anytime/anywhere.

What's with the hate? It sounds like you haven't even played ED yet...

Shouldn't you be fetching me a chicken McSandwhich and fries or something?

I was not interested enough to pay to beta test the game.

I was not dumb enough to pay to beta test a game that most likely, I figured would be released in a beta state ( as most MMOs inevitably are ). I don't know... call me visionary.

Vanilla shake please.

Hate is a strong word, I'm just calling it like I see it; trying to figure out if the player base will tank to the point that it's better to play on launch day or wait 3 months for the game to be more polished? I was hoping for Ironman mode on launch. You are a fool to ignore public perception.

Gamespot makes a mockery of the latest Elite trailer:

Random dude teaches marketing how not to make an ugly trailer:

It is being abused. Players who are pro-PVP are complaining that carebears spontaneously drop into solo, to avoid fights. The devs see it as a feature. They are trying to cater to both segments, the PVPers and the carebears.

From what I read, the offline mode ( now cancelled ) was supposed to be designed such that once you go into offline, you can never go back to open world. I don't see why solo should not be the same way. I don't understand why solo gets a free pass at basically cheating.

I get that people in the 40-60 year age demographic don't have the reflexes / vision / whatever, that they did when they were younger.

They should split it, have it where you make a character and you choose to either have pvp on or off and you are stuck with that.

Don't want to pvp? use a different character.

I wanted to finish tonight with a million credits and then outfit a Cobra, but the DCs tonight were pretty bad. Oh well, ended the night with 500k.

You haven't had any first-hand experience with the game, and your opinion is solely based on FD forum chatter and you're calling him foolish?

Looks like Frontier updated their support site and in so doing wiped all prior tickets. I just went to close mine and it was gone, but for all they knew it wasn't resolved, instead I find a new support website.

Have they said what time release is? Tonight midnight est? or UK? or what.

For around 300'ish I would suggest the CH Fighterstick/pedals/throttle:

Joystick:
http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-2...id=1418400541&sr=8-1&keywords=ch+fighterstick

Pedals:
http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-P...id=1418400541&sr=8-4&keywords=ch+fighterstick

Throttle:
http://www.amazon.com/CH-Products-P...id=1418400541&sr=8-2&keywords=ch+fighterstick

CH is known for being one of the most well built joystick setups out there, usually one of the most precise and well built. It's not uncommon for people to have them for 10+ years and they still work just as well.
I'm really tempted to buy this setup. My big issue now, especially with a lot of recent comments, is if the game will be good enough to spend $300+ extra on top of the game purchase. I think I'll wait till tomorrow night or so and decide if it's worth the money.

SC is so far out I can't even remotely justify buying this setup for it. Hopefully you guys will be posting glowing reviews of ED tomorrow.....

For all those new players out there with the release of the game tonight, some tips.

-Play the tutorials. You have the combat tutorials and the tutorials in game that teach you navigation and take off/landing, I would suggest you do them.

-Have fun, once you've figured things out, lost your first Eagle and racked up a sizable debt, simply reset in the option and now play the game for real.

-And finally, if you think you can be a troll in your Loaner Sidey or Freagle and just keep resetting, know you are nothing but a smear on the windshield for someone who has taken some time to upgrade their ship. Rather be a pirate and be a real troll in space in a nice upgraded ship and actually be part of the world.

It is a big chunk of change to spend on just one game or game genre. You could start with a lower end joystick like the Thrustmaster T16000 or the T-Flight HOTAS. One of the Twitch ED streamers started with playing with a Logitech Extreme 3D. All of those sticks are <$50. And there are players that use mouse/kybd in ED. Some even swear that it's better than joystick HOTAS, so you may want to give that a try too. YMMV

But for me, who's been playing flight and space sims for decades, anything less than a joystick/throttle/pedals in any flying game feels goddamn unnatural.

Some people are comfortable flying in ED with a 3D Pro Extreme and a G13 and are quite good at it, the analog stick functionality of the thumb stick on the G13 helps a lot. I had already picked up an x55 and TrackIR/ProClip for Star Citizen and my friend just picked up a newer x55 which I think they improved the build quality on.

I just tried mouse+keyboard again. Nope, not happening. I'll wait to see what you guys say tomorrow to decide if I'm going cheap or expensive with my control scheme. :D

You haven't had any first-hand experience with the game, and your opinion is solely based on FD forum chatter and you're calling him foolish?

My first experience with SWTOR was a couple of months ago, yet I called that game tanking on day 1 release, just based on reading the forum and seeing the one, God's honest review that wasn't overhyped fanboy shit ( and I thanked him for it in the Youtube comments ). Not only am I psychic, I can read - it's a gift. It's called taking a scientific average of other people's opinions. It's not difficult to do. You may have heard of a website called Metacritic or Gamerankings.com

Isn't science wonderful? :p

If only it was just "forum chatter". You can read in the comments section, in the PC gamer article, posted above this post, that obviously, that's not the case.

There's more than enough reading material in the General Discussion section:

Which applies to every single pre-rendered game trailer ever released, but for some reason it's fine when Blizzard does it.

It's a $5 garage band ffs LOL Most people's ears are bleeding from the trailer.

The changelog from Gamma to 1.00 had exactly 4 items on it. :p So it's not very different from yesterday.

It is really not that bad even for an official forum where people usually cry. No launch is perfect. A lot of people were under the impression that this was some kind of Space Based Dogfight game, which it isn't. Neither was the original, which I, and many others played the ever loving shit out of.

The game will grow.

Ears bleeding, right.
Yeah, they should have used the same music as a trailer to a movie which had a 9-figure marketing budget (like one of the other remixes someone's done). It's the soundtrack to a pre-rendered game trailer, and therefore of absolutely no importance.

What size is the download for the full game?

Anyone have an image showing the default X52 Pro bindings?

I played the combat tutorials this weekend and had a good time - can't wait to get in and give the full game a go (was not in beta).
