The Zuck makes his semiannual "we might add a dislike button" statement once again. I didn't realize it was that time of the year again already. ;)

Yesterday during a Facebook Q&A with Mark Zuckerberg, the head of the social network said the company is mulling over the addition of a “dislike” button — a thumbs down to go with that ever-present thumbs up. “We’re thinking about it,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s an interesting question.”

Wasn't there an article not too long ago about why they would never do this?

I don't have a clue why anyone bothers to hit a button regardless of whether they liked something or not.

I couldn't be arsed to press an "indifferent" button even if such option exists.

They add a dislike button and I will probably have to replace my mouse due to left-clicking it into a early death. :D

I fully support this. We need a way to publicly shame people for posting stupid shit :p

They already have several effective methods for disliking something:

1. Ignore things you don't like
2. Unsubscribe to pages that publish things you don't like
3. Unfriend people who post things you don't like
4. Comment on things you don't like and express your displeasure

Personally I would love if they added a dislike button since then I could delete my friends that use it :D

If I still went on facebook, I would use this and then realize what a waste of time it is to dislike all these posts and then stop I would stop going on facebook.

Also, why does Facebook think it's necessary to tell everyone on Earth when you change your profile or header photo?

That is the same line of thinking that I have.

If such an option existed, people would informally use it as a "dislike." Basic human psychology at work... (I'm reminded of the Chinese proverb, "may you live in interesting times," which was not meant to be taken as a positive thing; likewise, indifference is rarely neutral in truth)

There are many reasons they don't want to add a "dislike" button. Cyber-bullying is one of the main ones but certainly not the least. People will argue that negative elements will find otherwise to create discord and, while true, it ignores the fact that a button makes it all easier.

The "dislike" button will only work well when used in tandem with other changes, which on the whole will increase the complexity of the system. As you say, people can barely "be arsed" to push a button let alone deal with all the strings that will likely be attached with this change.

I would make a new FB account just to dislike them and then quit again.

A Dislike button will be a big blow for Facebook. Most people are there trying to get good feelings, and a Dislike button breaks that experience hardcore.

Post stupid shit: 2 likes. Yay people like me!
Post stupid shit: 2 likes, 24892 dislikes. Now I'm depressed!

Why shouldn't stupid shit be identified as stupid shit? The absence of a dislike button accomplishes nothing except to promote the posting of stupid shit.

But isn't it more the sign of lazy people that instead of taking the extra three seconds to post a comment with "WTF" or "Stupid" they need a button they can push to avoid the need to use the one thing that helps set man apart from most animals, language

Sure. But Facebook wants people using their site, not going away to cry in a dark corner.

Can I dislike all the adds that are flooding my main page the few times I do log on? The page is like 80% adds now no matter where you scroll. Hopefully FB follows myspace and dies a quick death.

A dislike button option to the average person is like giving matches to a 3 year old. Queue in George Carlin quote...

I thought the argument for a "dislike" button was for people to express sympathy for posted bad news, without needing to write a comment.

For example, when someone gets a new job and writes "I got a new job!", people hit "Like" as a way of saying "congrats!".

But if someone posts "My mom was just diagnosed with cancer :( ", it creates a perceived awkwardness where you don't want to "Like" that someone has cancer. Hitting "dislike" would express sympathy in that you dislike that news.

It'll never happen b/c some litigious parent will sue FB claiming that his/her child committed suicide due to having a post w/ too many dislikes.
