Hello all I am looking to upgrade my video card and need some advice. This is the PSU I have in my system now http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182071. I'd like to know which graphics card that's out now works well with my PSU. I've been looking at the R9 290 and the GTX 970. Thanks for your advice.

Edit: Also I'll be getting a new monitor next year 2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1080 so I'd like to get a card that can run these resolutions smoothly.

GTX 970

But why not wait till you get your new monitor? You'll hopefully have more options by then and I'm sure your 660 is chugging along decently.

You can run any single card on that. I bought an R9 290 during Black Friday ($215 out the door at Newegg - no rebate involved). I returned an MSI GTX 970 Golden Edition for it. Saved me $185 and the performance between the two is extremely close. The GTX 970 is better, but its not that much better.

Thanks for the advice i decided to wait for new monitors next year with g-sync and free-sync to be released, as long as my current PSU is able to handle the newer GPU I'll be happy.

I don't think there has been a single gpu card released that couldn't be handled by a quality 650 watt PSU. You should be good for anything that comes out. There are limitations on how much power a card can handle and overkill doesn't hurt, but a system with two gtx 480's in SLI (not overclocked) only draws about 600 watts under load. I would want at least an 850 watt for that, but thats the actual draw. I wouldn't be comfortable running most cards in SLI/xfire on a 650 PSU because I like to run my PSU in the 40-70% load range, but it is certainly doable in a lot of situations.

Long story short, you are good for ANY single gpu video card on the market now or in the foreseeable future with your present PSU.

If your goal is to go with a 2560 wide monitor, both the 290 and 970 may miss the mark for you. They can both play the more demanding games at 2560 right now, but generally not with all the settings cranked to the max. The 970 does outperform the 290 by a little bit, however, market dynamics have shown the 290 selling for $50-100+ less than the 970 creating a decent value proposition for the 290.

Get the 970 4sho. Its not as pimp as my GTX780ti, but its the best bang for the buck... them X70's.

OP, 54A on a single rail will do you well for a 290/290x/970/980 and then some. Considering the next gen AMD cards will likely be quite a bit more efficient than the 290/290x and with Nvidia already winning in the category, i would say your PSU situation is excellent and will be for a while. No need to upgrade there unless you plan on some CFX/SLI action.

Although, for the GPU... i would wait around to see what the AMD 380x/390x do. They should be out by the time you pick up your new monitor, but as David noted the current solutions may not provide you the experience you want at the resolutions you are going to game at so it wouldn't make much sense to spring for a 290/290x/970/980 right now.

Once again thanks for all your advice. I really do appreciate it. I personally like to play with MAX settings when i can. I've narrowed my resolution choice to 2560 x 1080 for monitor 29" and above so will wait to see what Monitor & GPU released by spring/summer next year to make my purchase.
