The Steam Holiday Auction has been temporarily closed. Valve is working hard to get things sorted out so keep checking back.

Sorry, but there have been some issues with Gems and the Steam Holiday Auction has been temporarily closed. The elves are working frantically to get the issues sorted out, and the auction will start again as soon as they're done.

It's quite simple. All these problems happen and could be avoided if you just take into account a simple truth.

People are selfish and greedy, and if there's any chance something can be exploited, it will be exploited.

The same thing happened with the 2011 holiday sale, and the generic response is "this is why we can't have good things" or something along that line. No, that's not the case. Just have the same promotions, but tie it to actual money spent rather than a stupid meta game which will be exploited.

Ok so what happened in the 2011 Holiday sale exactly?

I only just yesterday saw this whole gem thing on too, some ppl with 2-3 hundred K gems? Seems like a lot, how were they exploiting?

These holiday meta games always seem like too much work for me, trading card etc...no thanks.

That's not even the tip of the iceburg. There were some users with over 1 trillion gems in their inventory.

A few people had billions of gems (there was a dupe exploit to the best of my knowledge). They were then being priced vastly under retail value (you could buy 1000 gems for about $.03) and the auctions were way over inflated.

The 2011 Holiday sale was the one with coal where people were buying humble bundles for a penny (and buying tons of humble bundles), creating a new account, and getting coal, and trading that for games.

Ah, so that was how the auction got to over a million gem. When I saw it earlier today, I was wondering how people had that many gems. I check a background I had and it only gave me 100 gems.

This makes more sense. I was very confused how people were effectively bidding gems worth more than retail price for a variety of games.

So, is this the holiday sale? If so, my wallet feels safe.

Just sell the cards you get from games for real cash on the steam market and buy the games you want. So much easier. Let the dummies play with the gems.

Update on the auction:

http://steamcommunity.com/auction

"We apologize for the interruption. The Yeti has been contained. We had an issue with gems that means we need to reset and start again.

– All gems created by you will be returned to your inventory

– Gem purchases from the Community market will be reimbursed

– Auction bids have been canceled and the auction will be reset

– Trades involving gems are being investigated on a case-by-case basis"

Yes it is why we can't have nice things...tomato tamato.

Take note of any and all account information for those exploiting the system.
Require accounts to have some sort of actual user information, like a credit card purchase over a month ago, or value of games to exceed some amount.

So many fail safes, most likely none considered.
