Hi all, a schematic of my current home network is attached

I just added the new file server running VM images, and wanted to buy a managed switch for the home office with more ports. Do I need to replace the other dlink green 8 ports with manged switches?

Also, I am going to be replacing my main ddwrt based router with a PFSENSE box made out of older parts I have here (core2 with 4gb,etc)

it is not possible to add more drops, etc. These were added during a renovation. I only realized after that I should have added more. Instead I just used switches where needed. Its all gigabit cat5e.

1. Nothing is attached or linked
2. If you want to use VLANs most likely
3. Ok, any particular reason?

What the above poster said. I see no diagrams and you really haven't included any scope of work of what you are trying to achieve. Can't really guide you anywhere unless you tell us what you are wanting to do that you currently cannot.

the new server has vmware and is a freenas and win2012 box.

basically i want to use vlans to limit who can access what on the said server.

You can do either or.

Scenario A:
A Managed layer 3 switch. Control your VLANs and interVLAN routing on this switch

Scenario B:
Multiple "dumb" layer 2 switches connected to your edge router interfaces, or your PFsense if you decide to go that way. If your router can support multiple interfaces and configure each of them independently then this will also work.

Diizy basically already answered your question, but I kind of broke it down for you.
