Philips BDM4065UC - 40" 4K 60Hz monitor thread

I've been trying to figure out the 27" brand, but the photos are too blurry to read the logo. The 24" is the Sony PS3 3D display, I own one and they have around 20-25ms total lag. That should give us some basis for comparison, if I'm reading his test right the 40" is approx 10ms faster.

That would be rediculusly good lag for 4k display. Sounds almost too good :)
 
I want this to be awesome in every way...if it is it's practically a must buy for me.

Still no word on any competing monitors of this size? Hard to believe that Philips would be the lone wolf in this segment of the market.
 
Seiki's should be released Q1 2015.

But yeah, if some OEM is making 40" 4K panels, why aren't more companies releasing monitors??

Seiki is coming on their feets... more should follow but that will be well in 2015.

Philips is just first in the race. Seiki Q1/2015 looks very optimistic if one takes they promised DP1.3 connector and HDMI 2.0. Philips does not have them and when Seiki comes it will be out of the game. Then top tier manufacturers like LG and Samsung may release big-size curved 4K monitors which will blow out the other guys.
 
There is no GPU with DP 1.3 and I am not sure if next gen Nvidia/AMD GPU will support it.

So I don't think it's worth waiting for the Seiki. It will probably use SST over DP 1.3 but like I said, probably there will be no DP 1.3 GPUs any time soon, so.

As usual with new things there are chicken&egg problems. But one year from now DP1.3 will be a norm.

HDMI 2.0 is only useful if you want to connect a game console to the monitor, otherwise not.

Why you think so? For 60Hz 8-bit display HDMI2.0 is absolutely suitable for monitor. A small advantage could be that HDCP can be integrated with HDMI for watching Blu Rays.

From the connector point of view only HDMI 2.0 matters and Seiki with GTX9xx will be a perfect fit. DP1.3 will be SST but I would expect frst products 1 year from now. There is another aspect of all this if Seiki will deliver in Q1 which seems rather tight. Their release may easily slip to Q2/Q3.

This seems to be completely irrational nowadays. Philips is thus a sticker, stuff is made in China anyway. Could be even made on the same lines, Seiki, Philips, just stickers. What is more important is price range, cheaper products use cheaper components.

Anyway, dream monitors are known now: 40" curved or even better a 21:9 curved 5K of similar size, DP1.3 obligatory :D.

That's good. I asked via customer email and got answer from somebody in Philips that it is MST.

Got reply.

It was a Philips engineer who told us that. I'm not sure why there is this conflict of opinion from different people within Philips, but sometimes the customer service reps aren't the best people to ask technical questions like that to. Then again this engineer was once wrong about the use of PWM on a monitor (their G-SYNC model - which uses PWM when manufactured... But then has the board stripped out that controls that and replaced with a PWM-free G-SYNC one).

I will be testing the monitor shortly so will know either way and either way shortly. I will be very upset if this engineer is incorrect and will not be asking him any more questions of that nature ;).
 
Does it really matter if it is MST or SST? I mean once it's configured isn't the experience the same? I have no experience with MST displays but I thought the graphics cards sorted that all out properly nowadays.

Yes, it is not big deal nowadays but SST is more elegant and kinda certifies guys did their homework. There is also unknown issue about the input lag, hopefully they have not screwed up on this. In any case this monitor is tempting but there is brake when one realizes it will be technically oldfashioned next year when DP1.3, HDMI 2.0, curved and 5K will be everywhere.

As I use my current setup for TV too (regular UK 1080p 16:9), can anyone advise how 1080p would look on this monitor? Will it upscale to the full size of the monitor, and will it look good?
 
Finally gave in and decided to buy from the eBay seller only to discover he had jacked the price up to $1,999.

Upscaled 1080p should be fine provided there is good scaler enabled in yout PC
21:9 wide monitors have resolution below 4K. In my view 40"@4K is better than the
34"@21:9. Width is almost the same but height fills visual field better with the 40".

Turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Did some research and found it on Taobao (giant ecommerce website in China) for ~$900 including shipping and taxes. Should be in my grubby paws in 2 weeks or less. Will report back then.
 
By the way, do I need some sort of special DP or mDP-DP cable to run 4K at 60Hz or will generic monoprice cables do?

They went into making 34" 21:9 curved but it is evident that 40" 16:9 curved having almost the same width, fills better the height of visual field. Such curved 40" should be easy to do. Next in line should be ultrawide 21-23:9 curved 5K but this is a dream only.

5k is already here. ;)
 
I suspect that the phillips uses MST judging by the manual since it shows an option for DP 1.1 and DP 1.2 and I can't really think of any good reason to have that unless its switching between MST and non MST mode.

DP 1.1 can handle 4k @ 30 Hz over a single transport stream. It has the same amount of bandwidth as HDMI 1.4a.

Actually its a bit more bandwidth than HDMI 1.4 and much higher pixel clock as it can lower to 6bpc and can almost run 4k @ 60Hz @ 18-bit color.

There is no real reason for a monitor to have a DP 1.1/1.2 mode setting on it unless its MST. This makes sense for MST because DP 1.1 does not support MST and with the EDID it would only run over half the screen thus you would need an option to change it. With SST it should be able to just stay in the same mode and the graphics card should know its hardware limits and use a 30Hz mode in EDID instead of 60Hz. You don't really need to have an option in the menu of the monitor to change modes.

I just played with a Planar 4K 28" (these things are coming out of the woodwork) and it also had the 1.1/1.2 thing. Odd thing too, it was set to 1.1 by default.

The intended users for these monitors have some older laptops that were having trouble handling the 1.2 setting so that's what 1.1 is for.

But is this Planar SST or MST?
 
I got reply from a store here that they will get 2 monitors on monday and nobody has reserved them, but it costs 100 euros more than other stores so I will have to wait until second week of December or pay a higher price.

I just noticed komplett.se has set the preliminary date to 17th December. Komplett.no also changed date from 12/12 to 17/12. So I will have to wait even more :(.

Well, the LG 34UM95 has a setting to toggle DP 1.1/1.2 and that monitor isn't even 4K. I don't think it uses MST either.

I think some non-4K Dell monitors have also had a DP 1.1/1.2 toggle. So probably not a surefire sign this monitor is MST...
