for those of you in the IT field (i'm sure there may be a few :p) with an organization email address, and some free time to watch a webinar. been meaning to try out meraki gear for awhile now. should be a nice upgrade for the office.

I heard about this from one of our IT guys a few months ago but hadn't seen they actually announced it yet. Willing to give it a go. We've been shopping around for something to replace the bargain AP's we have from Cloudtrax.

I have one, hardware and features are nice, but unit is dumb without the cloud service subscription.

I signed up for one. I did this last year and never got to play with the access point, as it got used as a dumb AP.

Now with my new company, we're using Aerohive, so it'll be nice to see how it compares.

The free AP they had a couple years ago were weak. I moved off of them quickly. I have 2 sitting around that I have no clue what to do with.

It actually doesn't work without the subscription. It's configured to stop passing any traffic once the subscription lapses. I've had one of these for a couple years now and have been fairly satisfied with it. Not going to pay the $150 a year that they want once my 3 year subscription expires however.

got my MR18 this past friday. range on it isn't the greatest, but the feature set is definitely there. seeing great throughput as well. shame about the sub based model. doesn't really make sense unless you're rolling out meraki gear, but oh well. it was free.

do you get a confirmation for t he device? i attended the webinar and nothing

I got an email that my device is being sent by UPS, to a different city than I stated.

weird..

I received mine a few days after I did the webinar. Just got it set up.

It seems to have better range than my old Cicso 1252, is faster, smaller, and uses less power.

Sure it "only" has a 3 year license, but it is great for free :-D

By then I will want something else anyway.

So with this wireless AP (I haven't played with mine yet due to renovations/moving) can this act as a wireless extender at home? Are there any OS hacks to run Tomato or DDWRT?

Got one the last go round, not impressed. Between the high price, need for a subscription just to function, and not being able to compete with much cheaper products. Needless to say, I don't recommend these to my clients.

Can't be an extender.

The older MR12 and MR16 has OpenWRT and maybe DD-WRT support.

With the MR18 being fairly new, and it coming with a 3 year license, I doubt that there will be any 3rd party OS for it for a while.

My freebie came in. Other than only being dual stream capable (300mbps versus 450mbps) it's a kick ass AP for the price ($0 :) ). The meraki dashboard is kickass and makes implementation a joke. It's ridiculously easy. If I was deploying wireless networks for a living these guys would make my job a snap.
