There is probably no better endorsement of a space movie than having Neil deGrasse Tyson take to Twitter to talk about the stuff he likes in it.

Compared to his previous Twitter reviews, his opinion of Interstellar is surprisingly positive. Not since he praised Deep Impact have we seen him speak so highly of a movie’s depiction of science and scientists. Although he did have a complaint about one silly plot point

But Neil also endorsed Gravity, even though the physics in it and general logic of everything space related was mind numbingly inaccurate.

I would have thought that a smart guy like him would have ripped it to pieces for the idiocy of almost every scene from a technical standpoint.

Neil deGrasse has lost his role as a respected scientist in my view. He has lost objectivity and presents speculation and opinion as fact instead of letting fellow scientist judge the evidence on their own.

He is sadly yet another person with fame gone to their head thinking they redirect humanity with their view of "what is right"

I'm wondering if maybe instead he's using his influence to make space cool again?

Could have sworn he actually tweeted a bunch of the inaccuracies of "Gravity".

It's a great movie.

Does this comment have 99% to do with his stance on Global Warming from Cosmos?

Likewise. Guys like him and Michio Kaku (and other physicists regularly on TV), IMHO, are great diplomats for the science community and getting people interested in space/science. With that said, I didn't see any endorsement from Tyson for the movie itself. The special effects on the other hand....

There was a great article on Wired a week or two back about the special effects in Interstellar. They wanted to get it 'right', so after having the CG/SE team work with astrophysicists to figure out how to do it, they built a custom renderer that would bend light... exactly (or close) how gravity could bend light. After inputting all the proper variables, the effects of the black hole in particular was thought to be an error... when in all reality, it led to a semi-scientific breakthrough of sorts as it was the fist time a black hole was ever visualized correctly.

It's an interesting read

Maybe NDT doesn't enjoy picking apart every mundane detail of a movie that is made, and watched, for enjoyment .... unlike so many others here.

Sometimes the smart thing is to not always rip everything piece of fiction you see. Like most scientists right now, they want to get more people interested. If that means endorsing movies that have inaccuracies then so be it. Look at the profound effect that Star Trek had on people with space travel and it's full of inadequacies.

Sometimes you have to look at the big picture before you hammer in the details.

He got the job because he said those things, not visa versa.

Political nepotism has spilled out of its hidy hole of a handful of places intruding everywhere. Coming soon, if you don't have the correct politics expect your career to be limited in all sectors of the economy.

When one side has become that dispicable, civil war is the only next step.

Who gives a shit what he thinks? I wonder how computer users view Swordfish or other movies with computers? What about The Matrix? or any other FICTIONAL movie. Guess what? You want fully accurate movies? You'll be bored or watching pure documentaries (which is still fun). But, for an entertainment, plot filled movie? You make some things up. Those that get the science right is fun for a small minority that notice it, but for everyone else it comes to the question - am I entertained? It's not that difficult to suspend your brain fact checking to enjoy a movie.

I'd hate to be 'that guy' that criticizes every movie and every fact within the movie and how it was right or wrong. Must be fun at parties...

He's the biggest problem in the universe apparently

I don't understand what you're ranting about, but Tyson is a science communicator, he doesn't decide what other scientist works on.

I think the main controversy is that NDT misquoted and misattributed quotes to some people, like politicians to show how "dumb" most people are. When he got called out for the quotes being inaccurate, he got sort of defensive and didn't really own up to the mistakes.

If movies involving space exploration were 100% technically accurate, they'd all be incredibly boring.

I like how he has to own up to being wrong about who said something but the deniers don't have to own up to being wrong about the topic itself.

Michio Kaku is nutz. Don't you remember his chicken little routine over the use of the Plutonium reactors on deep space probes?

Dude, there is far less Sun light out there, what alternative is there AND yes the reactor is so strong it can survive re-entry in a crash, so STFU.

On a related note, we ARE running out of Pu-238. There isn't enough to fuel planned space exploration after the next 8 years or so. So we either have to find an alternative energy source or start producing our own again...which obviously would require congress to get off their lazy asses and fund such a thing.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. The overriding plot of the movie was good. The script writing was kinda crap. The science was better than any movie have seen in a couple of years. The wormhole, was phenomenal, I would almost go see the move again, just to see that one more time. The moment I saw that, I knew they must have someone on staff who knows their shit.

I think better script writing was needed for the Matt Damon scenes. There also needed to be more explanation about what the formula Michael Caine was solving would allow them to do. A better explanation would have made Mcconaughey's willingness to leave his kids seem more logical. It also needed some time added for Mcconaughey to train for the mission, because he may be the only astronaut left, but he still needs sim time and prep. The training could have been alluded to in 30 seconds. My brother and I argued a lot about the ending, because I thought even with the solution to the formula it would have taken longer than they state for mankind to build those ships. The solution would have been a game changer, but we would still have the issue of mining, food, moving people, etcetera.
