Work is going to have a couple of us traveling in late 2014 and early 2015. Plenty of public hotspots are around but I'm not horribly comfortable with hanging my data out in the wild.

Do you guys have a favorite VPN that you use and can recommend? I'll be using it for standard computing tasks, streaming, and pulling some torrents over public WiFi.

Any Cheap VPS lowendbox.com

A 5 minute install of OpenVPN AS.

Should cost about $15ish a year.

Using some type of VPN service just means your traffic encrypted from your notebook to the VPN server. What happens after that is still open. If you're ok with that, then one of the options above would work. I've got a few VPS's through buyvm.net a $15/year option canna mentioned. Spin up an OpenVPNAS instance and update accordingly. I use it when I need a US IP for geolocation.

Otherwise I would suggest if you have already have some equipment at home to set up OpenVPNAS (especially if you have an ESXi box). Free appliance and will allow two VPN connections without needed a pay for license. That way you know that the traffic is basically leaving your home network and not traveling across a bunch of other networks.
