check out teh hl2 mod oh my :D

I bet you spent a lot of time on that seriously......I never played Half Life 2 but I know it's the holy grail of all games on Steam.

I tried various versions of Fakefactory's mod. The initial versions were good, then he started changing the character designs and music. It offered the original, stock characters but not the higher res versions from previous builds. The version in the article is very... awkward. The whole game is black. Even the parts in broad daylight. The lights in the train don't do anything. The mod keeps getting worse and worse. :p

Eventually the developer of Fakefactory mod will get to the point where the game will begin with on screen instructions on powering down your monitor and imagining the game in your head. :D

I've used this mod before and don't remember it being that dark. It looks like crap.

Ive never used that mod before, but I gotta say, that looks (IMHO) awful.

Way too much emphasis on bloom/contrast to hide details.

With the possible exception of Dr. Brenner, I'm not a fan of the new models either. One of the things that I thought made HL2 really stand out was how the characters had flawed appearances to match their quirky personalities. The original models strike me as real people in the sense that you might see them walking down the street. The newer models fall into that trap of trying to make everyone look like the ideal (American) version of their particular stereotype.

In particular in the last shot, the loss of detail is staggering, and only covered up by excessive contrast.

From what others are saying in this thread, it sounds like this mod once had a bit more life to it. Shame, I'm sure the mod author is a hard working chap, and dedicated to have stuck to it this long.

Character alterations are *entirely* optional, last I knew. CM is very customizable

Something everyone seems to forget or leave out. It CM12 is a great mod, and well worth the download/install to try.

That article if shit.

CM12 worked fine last I used it. He must be using a testing build, or had a corrupt download. Further the article is years late to the game, CM has been around forever and last I knew the project was abandoned.

I used it a good while back also. Very big download to get it all. But you can customize the models and change them to different clothes, etc. Not sure what the deal is with that mod as it looks very bad. But the CM12/11? was great looking when I used it a couple years or so ago.

I actually thought it had been abandoned also. As nothing has been updated on the mod for a good while. Again not sure what is going on with those pictures but they look nothing like the mods that I used from FakeFactory Cinematic Mod.

@Skripka Thanks for pointing out how flawed the article itself is.

Got a link to the homepage: http://cinematicmod.com/cinematic_mod_12.php

Check out his comparison shots with descriptions. Looks like, as stated above, everything is customizable. The mod author even points out that the alternative model is, in his words: "Slutty, oversexualized, girl-next-door". It seems a bit paradoxical those terms, but I get his gist. Clearly it was intentional, and an alternative truer-to-the-original is provided.

Maybe if I every play HL2 again I might consider this mod.

For that matter though, does anyone have any spectacular alternatives?

The author originally abandoned the project because tons of people razzed him over the entirely optional character replacers...without even bothering to read if they were optional (like the idiot comments in the MPC article in the OP).. All mention of his moving on seems gone from the FF site, although the last update is from 2013.

FF CM12.1 will actually make Ravenholm raise your blood pressure and scare you. Especially if you have a monitor capable of black-blacks. Put it that way (that is the only time the game is near as dark as those screenshots-aside from some of the parking garage/tunnel indoor environments). It is a very well done mod at the high-res character (non-replacer) settings.

Things like bloom and gamma can be turned on/off customized. AAMOF, just about everything can be turned on/off.

I'll give a major recommendation for cinematic mod (though the prison level of hl2 is glitchy as fork), BUT stick with vanilla character models since the modded ones look like some new race of ape people.

If you want to play HL2, then no mods.

If you want something different, sure give it a try.

You recommend someone using software plainly labeled "alpha".? Srsly?

Because having textures that don't look like ass makes HL2 no longer HL2. Right.

Because the whole style of the architecture is different, and they also replace sounds, and music, and characters. To clarify I wasn't generally speaking, it's just my opinion on the mod mentioned here.

The original architecture of the buildings in the game resembles old eastern European style, the ones they replaced it with are completely alien to that feel and era.
