Nexus 6 speculation

Video would be far better if he revealed the camera settings. The N6 obviously has white balance on auto while the iPhone seemingly doesn't. The iPhone also looks like it's doing a better job of exposing dark areas correctly.

But at the very least, I can say that the N6 provides better photo and video detail.

I saw the iPhone changing white balance a lot at a couple points, so I'm pretty sure it's on auto. Yeah, it did seem to expose dark areas a bit better at some points, but it also looked way too warm and unnatural the whole time.

And I agree, they should have specified what settings they were using while shooting to ensure it was a fair comparison.

Damn it, I wish Google would take my $$$. Woulda paid them 3 days ago.

I guess I'm confused (as others are) at how a preorder gets sold out that quickly. A preorder. I read a comment on another site which I thought was funny: "Did Google lose the ability to keep a list?"

It would be great if there was some kind of guidance...

One user told me, that the guy have camera on his channel, that is not released yet, so its very possible that he has source for new hardware, and have the Nexus 6 - so there is a high chance the video is real!

This is the most expensive Nexus device ever created, intended to be sold almost exclusively through the carrier channels, with only a small sliver of inventory available via Google Play. Robert Hamilton, product lead for the Nexus program, said that despite the conception by early adopters that the Nexus 4 and 5 were predominantly purchased from the Play Store, most were sold through the carrier channels. - http://mobilesyrup.com/2014/10/29/nexus-6-hands-on-video-canada/

This could explain why stock went so fast though I don't understand why they just didn't let us pre-order first then give what ever stock is left to the carriers.

I highly doubt verizon has any control over the phone, the galaxy nexus had a completely separate model for verizon and it got updated slower. The nexus 6 is one model for att, tmobile, sprint, and verizon, makes me think they will all be the same on each carrier with updates at the same time.

If I recall, Verizon does have a lot of say over the phones they carry. They usually require the phone to have a heavy assortment of branding, apps and ensure updates have the same format before things get released. Case in point, they were the last to be able to sell the iPhone because A: there was no CDMA version until the 4 and B: they did not like that Apple wouldnt let them customize the ios software. Though to acknowledge a bit of contradiction in those statements, I really don't know how Google got past all that with their Vanilla Android Galaxy Nexus, or even the N6 that is rolling thru Verizon's channels.

Was there any reason why it wouldn't?

Okay, apparently Verizon was dropped from certain Nexus pages, which led people to believe Verizon wouldn't be carrying it. Can people fucking relax.

There was talk that CDMA carriers would not activate other carriers IMEI numbers on their network...only unlocked or the carriers own

Kinda this. This marks the first time ever that an unlocked phone sold outside of Verizon is able to be activated on it without Verizon having its CDMA IMEI registered on their network already. The LTE Nexus 7 was LTE only, so it was much easier to get working. But a lot of people (myself included) that you wouldn't be able to buy a N6 outside of Verizon stores and be able to activate it on their network (like every other phone in the past) even if it does support all of their bands out of the box.

You can buy plenty of phones outside of Verizon stores and activate them on Verizon....... walk down to BestBuy or an Apple store.

They're partners with Verizon.. Verizon still supplies the phones to them.

If you look at those pics you can see when placing a call that there is no LTE symbol, I'm wondering if this is like the turbo and new moto x where it can't do voice and data on verizon unless it has advanced calling.

is there review / early hands on with details on screen and camera quality yet?
i want to know how well amoled on nexus 6 performs compared to note 4

From what I have read, I am thinking it is the exact opposite. Carriers get first dibs, google play gets what's left.

Recently I noticed that you could not order a moto X with black leather for almost two weeks. ATT has just added that option to their selection of moto x phones available through them. I presume ATT was hoovering up all the available black leather backs and Motorola was making good on their contract. Now, it's all of the Nexus 6 phones and all of the carriers and google/Motorola are doing everything they can to not drop the ball and make nice with a potential distribution channel.

I imagine most people would be more comfortable buying through their carrier anyway, so google launches a few phones to satisfy the end of October byline, and then gives all the inventory to carriers. Sucks for us, but if it's technically the same phone (crossing fingers) it should not matter. If they aren't, then it sucks big time. Time will tell...

As an aside, I have been looking at galaxy notes and LG g3s when out and about to wrap my head around the N6. After two weeks of this, they don't seem ridiculously huge. Maybe this 6" thing ain't so bad.

That's what I meant, but it should have been the pre-orders first, then ship to the carriers as some have mentioned it could drive people away and go to a different phone. I understand Google doesn't want to provide end user support so just put a disclaimer that all support would be given through their carrier.

Carrier subsidized price has supposedly been confirmed to be $199. I wonder if the display is pentile?

I've just brought a 32gb Nexus 5.

For a few reasons:-
  • It costs £265, almost half the price of the Nexus6 (they haven't even released the UK price or date, not good!).
  • The Nexus6 has gone with a Snapdragon 805, rather than waiting for the 810 (which has ~double the GPU speed + significant power savings).
  • 1440p is overkill and a little too much for the 805.
  • For the price, there shouldn't be too much depreciation when I come to sell it.
  • Android 5 should be out about the same time I get the phone, so battery life should be quite a bit better.
  • My current phone, a HTC Sensation XE (with only 768gb or ram) sucks and I need to replace it asap!

It is a PenTile display. There is no AMOLED displays of that resolution that I believe exist that use a standard RGB.

Witht hat type of resolution however, it is pretty much impossible to see the PenTile subpixels. Once displays went 1080p, PenTile's faults are pretty much non-existent.

Should've gotten a oneplus instead it's better than the nexus 5.

Not the same. OnePlus is going to do Lollipop, but it's going to take longer -- just no way around that. Also, having to score an invitation and hope you don't have to deal with support? Yeah, that's not my idea of a good time. Convenience and support quality matter!

I see. Pentile never really bothered me; I'm just curious as to what an RGB version looks like because I don't think I've ever seen one in person.

That's one reason, the other is that I have to order it from China, which takes a few weeks and the possibility of having to pay import duty on top. If I could get one distributed within the UK/ Europe, I'd have gone for it (nice specs + really good battery).

The N5 isn't a bad phone to tie me over, wish I brought one a year ago. I can always upgrade when something better comes out.

Well, according to XDA, Google sold a whopping 2 more Nexus phones today.

How does an industry giant like Google bomb so badly at making good product launches? I don't think they could manage to piss off any more otherwise loyal fans who are happy to give them money if they tried.

iPhone 6+ is not better but is brighter at the cost of ugly blown out highlights, lost of detail and odd looking haze. More of a trade off but the Nexus 6 produces more usable results but I would still prefer a dedicated camera for this kind of lighting environment.

Google/Motorola went to bed with the carriers on the Nexus 6 and that is where the bulk of the stock will go.

Playstore may get some here or there, but they are pushing you to buy through the carriers.

My only question is if there is any difference between the phones sold on on the Google Play Store and those from the carriers - ie. will carriers control the update roll outs for the phones sold through their channels?

I did notice the SKU of one of the units that a reviewer was "unboxing" had a "GPE" appended at the end - GPE as in Google Play Edition. This scares me quite a bit.

Based on what Arstechnica.com said, the carrier devices may lag behind with updates.

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014...talks-to-android-execs-about-the-upcoming-os/

As such, we asked if history would repeat itself with these new carrier Nexus devices. "I don't think we're going to do that. There is carrier testing that has to happen—you can't get away from that—but we're trying to have our updates be frequent," Burke said. "I think the carriers are learning and realizing that's a feature they want. So I think these are getting more efficient and they're getting better at it."

So it sounds like carrier Nexus devices will lag behind the unlocked versions, as they will have an additional carrier testing step. The hope this year is that the carriers wise up and won't delay things too much, but the potential for a delay is there.

Which unboxing review was this?

If its like the current moto x, and droid line on verizon it really shouldn't lag all that much behind. They even got some updates before some of the nexus devices did.

All I want is a firm release date for all carriers and conformation on direct updates. We have to wait till 12th for real reviews.

Did previous LTE phones work with calling over CDMA and data on LTE at the same time? Im curious to why Verizon is still so slow with the VoLTE rollout
