Google Glass has been officially banned from movie theaters.

Wearing Google Glass at the movies never was cool to begin with, and now it’s official: You can’t use the smart eyewear inside theaters. The Motion Picture Association of America and the National Association of Theatre Owners on Wednesday said they were officially banning the use of Glass and other wearable recording devices in the cinema as part of an updated “anti-theft policy.” The MPAA has said the movie industry loses billions of dollars a year due to piracy.

No surprise. I've been asked a couple of times to put my tablet away before a movie starts.

I was going to say "What kind of tool would wear Google Glass into a theater," then I remember these are glassholes we're talking about. :D

Sometimes I like to go to a movie, and like 30 seconds before a badass scene I pull my cell phone out and start recording while telling everyone around me what is about to happen and why it's so badass. Everyone usually thanks me for letting them know ahead of time, it's so nice.
Never been kicked out of a theater by the MPAA either, so apparently they approve.

LOL, goggle glass can take a crappy video for 30 minutes. Not quite what HD streaming illegal movies are like?

Stupid.

And before someone says "but prescription lenses..." you're the asshat who put prescription lenses on a $1500 hands free tablet/smart phone, in the same way I weld my glasses to a HD video camera and claim prescription, if you must get a pair of cheap glasses for watching movies, obviously you can afford them.

Have to ask - why take a tablet in there?

Simply because I always have it on me anyway. I like to check up on a movie in the IMDb app instead of watching the ads and trailers that I've probably seen before.

It's common sense, really. If you're going to the movies - cameras aren't allowed. If you get prescription camera glasses and then bitch when you can't go in because they are 'prescription', you're the idiot asshole. There is no arguing that. You lack common sense and are stupid. You look like an entitled little prick, and no one likes those people. Don't like it? Don't wear a camera, prescription or not, to the theater. I don't care if it's 30 minutes of shit video, it's a camera.

That's what I thought, other than the trailers part. Just wondering. :)

Since you brought it up, there is a whole branch of science dedicated to assistive tech. Having the ability to record and payback video WILL be used as a medical device very soon for certain situations. Like it or not, glasses are a MEDICAL DEVICE, and its not nearly as cut and dry as you want to think it is. Video cameras are going to be mounted to people's bodies, and the MPAA is fighting a losing battle. They should be focusing their efforts on distribution, and piracy for profit, not end users in theaters. Calling the cops to accost someone for potentially recording is incredibly stupid, especially whne it shouldnt be a CRIMINAL charge at all, but a civil matter.

Police have gotten involved in domestic and civil stuff in the past. That's not too weird. Besides, movie piracy is a criminal thingey so people really should be arrested for wearing Google Glass regardless of the made up future medical implications that don't actually exist.

I say let them wear gg.
Just let them know before they can be seated they're subject to a 45 minute body cavity search for extra cameras.

The ban is absurd and the responses I'm seeing here are worse. Google glass batteries are good for only 30 minutes of video recording and the quality isn't anything to write home about. Cell phones are much better for recording videos yet they aren't banned.

@ the one who questioned why anyone would take a tablet to a movie... When I used to go to movies (I don't anymore because of the inconsiderate jerks that chatter throughout the movie, let their children run amuck, etc.), I would get there early to make sure I got a decent seat. To kill time until the movie started, I would read a book, later replaced with an e-book reader, rather than watch the inane nonsense on screen before the trailers started.

Granted, some Google Glass users are Glassholes but most are not and people are overreacting to the technology. The negative responders here need to grow up and lighten up!

Pretty sure if you point your cell phones camera at the movie screen during the movie you'll get kicked out whether you're using it or not.

Also like Lady said, google glass only lasts 30 minutes taking video, making it useless for video capture

Video camera for medical that has upload to remote site that can't be demonstrably switched off. Unlikely.

But keep dreaming.

Better ban smart phones, they can record video as well

Pretty sure if you wore this with a smartphone or gopro mounted, you'll be asked to leave.
shopping

I'm not a fan of Google Glass, but because the MPAA wants them banned I really have the urge to buy a pair of glass and wear them in there anyway.

If it was up to the MPAA, they wouldn't want to provide audio access for the hearing impaired because pirates could can (and do) use it to get higher quality audio for their bootlegs.

There will eventually be blind people, who will see through the use of a video camera.

Spire, if you steal from a company, it's a criminal issue.. If they steal from YOU it's a civil issue. Gotta remember that. :)

Precisely. In reality I am glad they are banning it, but they are banning it for the wrong reason. Most of us just don't like being around annoying entitled people. Of course that is why the last time I went to an actual movie theatre was to watch either Passion of the Christ or Star Wars Episode 3(cannot remember which it was). I cannot understand how inconsiderate people get at movie theatres, especially when it runs you $20 for a ticket, popcorn, and soda.

lol, wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute...lol

You want them to ban it because you don't like being around "entitled" people?

This has got to be one of the greatest things I've ever read on this site.

You can't make this up, folks!

Oh, and as for the inconsiderate people bit, I honestly can never think of a time that I was at a movie theater and went "wow, that person was a douche bag."

+1. just a guess, but I bet most of the people going on about "annoying entitled people" really really wish they could drop $1500 on a pair of google glasses. oh, plus another $400 or $500 for decent prescription lenses, gotta have Crizal to reduce the glare in a theater.

boggles my mind the raw hate spewed forth on this subject. for no real reason that I can find, other than a lot of Glass envy. talk about your first world problems! get a grip people.

Give me a reason why anyone would need to wear Google Glass.

They're douche bags, but function as douche bags within legal boundaries and optionally may believe they are acting within social norms. They want to have Glass be a personal security cam in case someone kicks their ass. So they can be a further douchebag and call the cops to handle their problems.

I guess you never heard of people stitching video together? And I thought I was old.

Far as I'm concerned, google glass with video recording should be canned period. Its one thing to be obviously recording in public with a camera or cellphone another to be doing so in a surreptitious manner which google enables with this device.

In which case it would be prudent to make off with the recording device as well eh?

This google ass BS is getting out of hand. We need some government oversight :)

Seriously, troops on the ground are walking with these glasses on threatening would be "on the spot corrections" noting that whatever they say would be on youtube ricky-tick....fuck glass.

These are the people who expect us to believe their only revenue problem is piracy rather than refusing to adapt to the way consumers want to get their media.

I'm not surprised they are incapable of looking up specifications for a tech product.
