Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

Well it's definitely still Civ.

I played my first game. Suddenly it was 8 fucking hours later. I played like a gigantic pussy and let the Slavs attempt to obliterate me early on. After wasting ever unit they had I was surprised to find him willingly giving up all their energy and strategic resources to try and keep me at bay. The next and last they saw of me was bugs the size of sky scrapers surrounding their cities several hundred years later.

So the good is that turns seem much quicker end game. The game is butter smooth on ultra with Mantle. The AI seems more sane, especially with trade requests.

The bad is the UI just sort of seems to meld together. I dunno really how to put it, but I'm not a huge fan of it. And I dunno, only played a single game so far but I'm not sure if I like the progression as much.

there's a bug in the window mode, i switch back and forth from the game to chrome and etc. this one time, all the text within the game went blank. i saved it and exited. now i have a Steam Error "failed to start game (missing exe)".

oh, i guess i wont the first game. i built the world wonder again and won the game. i wished it said it...

I picked up the game the other day.

I wouldn't call it a re-skin, but you can see the similarities with Civ 5. I completed my first run took around 7 hours and I lost. I attempted the harmony path to victory. One of the Ai's completed the Emancipation (Supremacy) victory condition. I was on turn 386 I believe.

Tech tree is kinda all over the place but it was also my first time with it. I feel my second play through will be much more enjoyable.

Running the game at 1080p ultra settings, 8x msaa, Mantle , game runs better than Civ 5, looks better as well. I like the game will be play a lot over the next few days in my spare time. The game is begging for some 4k goodness.

To the dudes in here that seemingly "lose randomly": check your Quests and Victory page. It shows you how much progress each player has towards a particular victory condition. The game also announces when a player has completed a major step towards victory (i.e. Researched a victory tech, built an Emancipation Gate/Mindflower/etc.). When that happens, you either take them out or leg it and hope you finish your victory condition before they do.

Runs pretty well in 4K. 30Hz on my Seiki isn't a problem either since well, nothing ever moves fast in Civ..

I'm the only here who think the aliens are too strong?
They can't be beated by starting units, it need very powerfull units.

The Aliens are certainly not the barbarians in CiV 5. I don't think they are too powerful. I've yet to be attacked by the Aliens other than the Big Worms, and random attack on a worker when traveling between cities.

Got my first victory last night with the Contact Victory Path.

Yeh when I first started I started with the perk that gave me a free worker. Turn 5 or something rolls around and a siege worm decides to murder fuck my worker.

I'm then venturing around with my explorer dude and there's nothing around me. End turn. Siege worm outa no where murder rapes him. Built up my military and shit, now at turn 150 ish and haven't seen any fucking worms since. I have the quest to kill one, but can't find one anywhere.

I bought it, and really am not engrossed. It sucks to admit. I hate the tech web. It gives me no sense of a timely progression. Previous civs you always felt you were advancing in tech, here it just gives me new buildings occasionally to build. I'm never reaching for a tech, just getting whatever random one seems to have new buildings. The affinity stuff advancing your units takes out a huge component of bothering with research.

The world wonders seem very 'meh.' And the resources? What resources? I have a bunch of the strategic ones but can't find any real use for them--not to mention getting the tech to discover all of them in the first little while of game play?

I remember in civ 5 finally getting the tech that allows you to see say oil. I don't have any in my region but my bastard neighbor has some in that nice big city there. I fucking need oil bad for all the new units/buildings I need. It gives me a reason for going to war with him. And a great reward upon capturing that city. In Beyond Earth it doesn't give you the sense at all that you need these resources.

I was looking forward to this game greatly but it stripped so many things from civ 5 and didn't really add anything worthwhile. I really wish I had played the demo and skipped buying it. Hopefully future expansions will expand on the game.

Thanks for sharing this honest feedback on the game. Have you tried multiplayer yet, or going for military victory on huge single player map? In SP mode, that's usually how I play Civ games, try to wipe out all the A.I.'s in the world.

Looks like there are already some mods up on Steam Workshop: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse?appid=65980&browsesort=trend

Hopefully modders will be expanding the tech tree and game systems as they did for Civ 5.

Considering its a Civ game you can count on it having an expansion pack sometime down the road.

I hope they add some more audio to the game. The music is fine, but every-time you are greeted by someone in the game its the same line over and over. Would be nice if they would add a few more voice dialogues.

The tech tree for me isn't that bad. Takes a bit of time to get used to. I can see why people have no idea of how they compare to other AI players. Civ 5 had different Eras and would announce when each player reached the next one. In beyond earth you have to look at the quests page to see progress towards victory conditions. You can also tell how advanced the AI players are by their units. So maybe it would be nice to add rings (since the tech tree is oval) to the current tech tree map indicating era?

There are already a few mods on the market.

This game is pretty meh in general to me. I mean Civ 5 felt rich, historical, and significant in many ways. I especially enjoyed the voiced quotes from various art pieces and whatnot. It had its issues, but it was a fun game that my friend and I occasionally played (though we always played something else on the side...). The technologies made some sense and you could generally tell where you were focusing on. Even for a person that sucks at planning like me, I could have some fun planning out my civilization in that game.

On the other hand, this just feels... bleh. Just really bland. I've tried two or three of the world types, and they both looked exactly the same. Even the type of aliens that I saw were the same! This is boring as heck. Not to mention, the aliens are ridiculously stupid overpowered early on. Especially the RANDOM SIEGEWORM APPEARANCE. It's all a huge nuisance. Plus, the miasma that's always present means you settle places and now to get set up you need all the buildings, you need an orbital thing to kill miasma. You need to get rid of any nearby alien threats. Oh, and while doing that you need to hope that you don't piss off a random siegeworm (or two). Which is nearly impossible by the way. One time I went around killing a few random beetles with my early game soldier unit, and then the siegeworms just came outta nowhere and just gobbled them right up. And my city was surrounded by 4 siegeworms; though, they didn't close in at all, just kind of stayed at distance.

So what the hell are these worms? Guardians of order or that have some heavy bias towards random flying beetles? Why is everything a beetle or a giant worm? It's like Bandits in Civ 5 having marines at the beginning of the game.

I could go on and on, but seriously this game is just REALLY half-hearted. Maybe quarter-hearted. Like they really didn't put much effort into this, and I feel really bad for preordering it. It's crap for the money they charged. This is also one of those scenarios where I feel that professional reviewers were seriously paid off to give this thing a high rating. I mean I guess when you forget that Civ 5 exists (which every professional reviewer consistently did apparently), this is an OK-ish game, but even then it would get a 6 or a 7 at most. It just feels like it lacks soul. Civ 5 felt like a much better effort than this thing.

I'm just happy that the user ratings on metacritic are really nailing it home. Last I checked it was at a 5.x, which sounds about right.

Oh and I forgot to mention the wonderful tech difficulties. Like, I couldn't even play it above like 720p on my ROG Swift without going through some convoluted processes.

Like wtf? It looks like they're basically recycling the friggin engine, so why the hell mess that up? Ugh.

I thought I was gonna take over more worlds as I won the in first planet.........guess not.

What sort of frame rates are people getting in Beyond Earth?

I think my afterburner's fps monitor is corrupt because its recording around 53-57fps about 200 turns in max zoom out on a huge map for 2560-1600p w/ 8x MSAA and the ultra preset. This is with my tri-fire turned off and a single 7970 running at 1250 /1650 as in my sig.

It's OK, not great though. Reminds me of when Civ. 5 launched... It was... A work in progress. Took a while to get there, but it's good now.

Really, Really, Really like the new game engine though (Mantle). If they would patch it into Civ. V I'd be set for another half decade, seriously.

Yeah, Civ 5 is currently better, but if they ever get BE to Civ 5's state (in terms of content and polish), then I will only play BE.

The changes to gameplay make it a mechanically more interesting game.

I'm on turn 335 or so without leaving the keyboard once for a break, and the game is still running perfect. I could have won long ago I think, but I'm torturing the A.I. for even more fun. I got it for $35 @GMG.

Mostly agree, but over the past couple of days I've come to realise one thing. The tech web is the way it is because this is supposed to be the future. I recall some dev interview type thing where they said something to that effect, so you can choose where you want to go and what you want to specialise in. There isn't one particular obvious choice because no one quite knows what the future holds, and these are all possibilities. More powerful weapons? Closer affinity to the aliens? Greater control over the environment? All that is possible depending on your tech web choices. Its different from Civ 5 in that it doesn't automatically channel you forward in time, and together with the affnity system it can result in pretty different playstyles / games.

Though my initial reaction is different = bad, it's starting to grow on me. Slowly though. Very slowly. I'm starting to think as I get more familiar with it it might get better.

Anyone having issues with Sound with the game? I have sound at the intro movie, but once you get to the menu or actual game, its completely silent. I have issues with Mantle not working either, even with updated beta drivers.

Yeah I can't wait to play this game in a year when it's fixed :/

Really enjoying this game so far. I still haven't finished my first game (can only play around an hour a day) The game does have issues though, feeling a little empty at times, factions which are too passive, no planetary council, etc)

But despite that it still has that "one more turn" feeling. I couldn't really get into Civ5, but I really got immersed into Civ BE. It has a lot of potential, I'm sure future expansion(s) will improve this game in many ways, like they did for Civ5.

I just started the Emancipation Gate, most other factions follow the Purity path and unsurprisingly they hate my guts. (Hostile) So far they haven't declared war but they're getting more advanced units and really moving up in Purity fast. The only two factions (also Supremacy) I have friendly relations with told me I had a strong military, probably the only thing keeping the others away for now.

Also, I love Supremacy. Nothing cooler than having a large army of fully upgraded autonomous "killer robots" (CNDR's, several CARVR's and a few Arbiters) at your command.

Are there the equivalent of city-states in this?

Yeah, instead of city states there are now Stations. They only occupy one tile and don't have territory. The people inside a station have isolated themselves from a faction so they can focus on specific goals.

They're mainly there to establish trade routes. If you have a trade route with them, they'll advance in tiers. Each higher tier gives a lot more trade and resources to the faction which trades with them like science, energy, production, etc.

Sometimes they're involved in a quest. Harmony for example could get a quest to destroy a station at one point because their ideology or experiments are not compatible with the ideology of Harmony and may have unwanted influences. I had one time a station making a request to eliminate a rival station, and in exchange I would receive lucrative trading benefits.

Other factions can get upset if you destroy a station. Overall, they fullfill the role of a city- state but interaction is limited and they can't produce units. Personally I actually like this, I disliked at times how City states in Civ5 had such a huge impact and/or took away good territory.

Agreed! That sounds like a great compromise between outright removing them and the city-states in Civ5.

Man this game really sounds sweet. Gotta exercise some patience and wait for a bundle.

Yeah, it's a sweet game. It has its flaws but the positive elements makes it easier for me to overlook them, and several of those flaws will likely be corrected/fixed/improved in the future. Love the amount of choices, upgrades and decisions you have to make. Terraforming is a lot of fun too with many options to choose from.

Looking back, the original price was a bit too high, but I certainly don't regret buying it.

If no one trades with a station for some time, they'll disappear. The reason is probably that the stations need trade to survive and aren't able to sustain themselves on their own.

Sometimes another faction takes one out.

I doubt i'd regret buying it right now, but damnit mom, why'd you have to make me so frugal lol

This is also really cool. Without being able to make units or control land themselves, they would naturally need trade to keep them afloat.

In my current game, I have them been trading with them and no one attacked them. I'm not sure what happened.

Is there a way to automate trade routes? I'm so sick of having to re-tell them where to go every few turns....

Seems like every turn that's all I do is coordinate trade routes.

Has anyone noticed that no matter what you do, cities either don't expand as quickly as I'd like, or they don't spread as far as I'd expect?

I keep picking the artists that give +2 culture and +1 health per city... and the option that cities expand borders twice as fast. Works pretty well.
