Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

Hey guys, for those of you who are having display issues, this may help.

I was having problems at first too, it wouldn't display a 1440p option. I think the game only gives the option of a certain number of resolutions, so if you have several custom profiles (for example, I had 100hz, 96 hz, 90 hz, and 60 hz as custom resolution profiles), it won't display them all. I had to go and delete a couple of the profiles, leaving just 60 and 96 hz (I run it at 96). After doing that, the game displayed the proper resolutions, and I could play in 1440p. I hope this made sense lol

Honestly no idea why I'm not getting this problem, when it seems like almost everyone else is. Check it out (it's fullscreen):

For reference, I'm running Windows 8.1, ASUS VG248QE and 290X.

That's crazy, consider yourself lucky...

If you played Civ5 then you have played this. It's a DLC sold at full retail when all they did was reskin some stuff.

That's kind of disappointing but was to be expected. Honestly I kind of lost interest in Civ 5 after playing one full game (about 8 or so hours with a couple of clan mates). There isn't much to do after that. Plus the historical inaccuracies and tanks being killed by spearmen isn't really that interesting to me anymore.

If you are looking for an alternative to this, check out Pandora: First Contact. Very similar game that came out earlier this year.

Edit: NEVER MIND, NOT WORKING.

Used CRU 1.1.2 to delete all the lame resolutions from both of my monitors. Only kept 1920x1200 for 1st and 1920x1080 with different refreshes for the other. After reboot windows changfe resolution screens still show smaller resolutions,

BE DX11 modes still shows some low resolutions, 1920x1080 144Hz is missing.

BE Mantle shows the following:
1920x1200 60Hz
1600x1200 60Hz
1920x1080 60Hz
1920x1080 59Hz
1920x1080 50Hz
1920x1080 30Hz
1920x1080 29Hz
1920x1080 25Hz
and ~10 more lower resolutions like 1680x1050, 1360x1024 and so on.

No idea how and where BE pulls those stupid 50, 30, 29, 25Hz settings from.
120Hz, no 144Hz are missing.

When I actually try to change the resolution it moves the output from the primary monitor to the secondary, shows "Apply Selected Resolution Yes/No" dialog there, but when I try to click Yes, the output goes back to the primary display and nothing happens. After 15 seconds it reverts back windowed mode.

Shit's messed up.

Edit2: Tried to change input on the secondary monitor to HDMI from PS4. Win8 detected the switch, all windows moved to the primary monitor.
BE DX11 still shows a few dozen of resolutions, except the one I need.
Mantle shows and switches to 1920x1080 60Hz (120Hz and 144Hz are missing), able to confirm the dialog change, but as soon as I re-enable the secondary monitor the output jump there and it's downhill after that.

Firaxis is still treating the resolution issue as a bug, so no plans for a hotfix.
I guess we're waiting on a patch @ this point

I'm enjoying this so far. After a few games to try things out I'm now settling on Supremacy, love the idea of killer robots and your units having a sleek and shiny design.

The Might virtue tree is also pretty nice. Having tougher units and giving energy and science rewards for dealing with aliens makes hunting them and their nests a pretty lucrative endeavor. You only need to keep an eye on Siege Worms.

Game does feel a bit empty though, no planetary council, factions lack character, limited diplomatic options but at least the potential is there. And I'm sure future expansions will do the same for Beyond Earth as they did for Civ 5.

I also used CRU. When you open up CCC and select the refresh rate for your monitor, does it just show 2 options? I had to restart my computer for the changes to show up in CCC. When I got it down to just 2 options (60 hz and 96 hz) it worked in BE

If you mean CCC / Desktop Management / Desktop Properties screen.. It shows a huge list of resolutions and refresh rates. I did reboot at least a few times while I tried different things.

In CRU, do you have it down to just 2 options under the detailed resolutions box? I previously had 4, but had to delete 2 of them. Then those two options are what show up under refresh rate in CCC. I have had multiple monitors cause me issues before (not with BE, but in general), so I just have my primary hooked up right now to simplify things.

How many options do you have available to you under the refresh rate box to the right? Here's what my CRU and CCC look like:

There are 50, 59, 60, 100, 120, 144hz for primary monitor and 50, 59, 60Hz for secondary.

Anyway, you're using a single display and I'm using Excended desktop over 2 monitors.

You need to get rid of all those extra options, that was my problem originally as well. Set it up similar to mine and it should work. And I'm aware of that, that's why I suggested you disconnect the second monitor to simplify things. Although that may not be necessary if you can get the number of refresh rate options down

Anyone who is interested in a better game or some nostalgia should just go pick up the Alpha Centauri pack at GOG which nets you a lot more and better game for a lot less (10% of the sticker price of Beyond Earth IIRC).

I am hooked, played 8 hours last night, dreamed i was still playing and woke up early to play more. :D

The new look is refreshing, but the game needs 2-3 expansion packs to flesh it out.

There is a 100 turn demo on steam to those who are on the fence. I will be waiting for a sale.

The game play seems solid.. but it's really lacking depth as others have stated. It feels like it's not a complete game and I'm sure that's intentional for future expansions. I'm a little underwhelmed overall.

out of the blue, i lost? idk, game ended at 473 for me and i have no idea what happened.

Overall, pretty underwhelming. Feels like it's on one hand trying too hard yet on the other hand not hard enough. As someone said, feels like a DLC reskin of Civ 5, but without the expansions. The tech Web is interesting but maybe I'm just not used to it, but just doesn't quite make sense to me. In Civ you always knew what was coming up next in terms of tech but here it's pretty open ended. Also other than domination victory the other victory options seem pretty wtf to me. Aliens seem disappointing too - right now they just seem to me like pimped up barbarians when so much more could have been done with them.

Seeing how I have limited play time (having a one year old does that to you) plus so many other games vying for my attention - new Wow expansion next month! - it's hard to see me playing much more of this. Maybe once an expansion or two is released.

It's probably best to limit the victory conditions. Seems like there are a ton in this game and the AI knows how to get each one.

I don't like how a lot of the comments the other leaders are just copy-pasted from Civ 5. Every time I see one of those I just exit the game. This game just feels like a blatant money grab.

Edit: Seems like everything is just reskinned and given a new name.

cod 1, 2 3 4 5 and etc..?
not seeing much of a customer stop buying those games.

Well, I'm gonna be the outlier in this thread.

If you ignore the superficial stuff, the way the game actually plays out (in terms of strategy and management) is completely different from Civ 5. Some aspects are better, some are worse, but overall I'm pretty satisfied, and Firaxis has a proven record of longtime support.

The fact that there are only 8 Leaders doesn't bother me. The tech web completely invalidates the need for different Leaders/Civs, and I'm guessing the only reason they're in is for single-player. It's not like Civ 5 where the Leader you chose determined what strategy you were going to take into the game (and usually you were railroaded into 1-2 optimal strategies).

The UI is kinda janky though, and the AI is way too passive, even on the hardest settings. but both those things can be fixed with patches, so time will tell.

I'm about 6hr or 350 turns into my first game. So far so good. Only my second Civ after playing a bunch of Civ5 last year. Gameplay is similar, but it doesn't just feel like a reskin to me.

I'm definitely on the 'things are just happening for no reason' bandwagon. I bought a settler in one of my cities, and it deleted the whole city and give me a boost in production or energy. Luckily I had a lot of saved energy and was able to mass buyback most of the city. Strange!

Other than that so far so good

Sounds like if someone never played Civ5 (raises hand) then they won't even notice this game is a "reskin" - fair assumption?

Is that even a serious question?

Yup agree with all of that. Plays quite differently. The biggest difference for me so far is not being "tunneled" into a specific mandatory strategy depending on your leader like Civ. 5.

There probably will be good min./max. Values calculated eventually, but I'd expect expansions packs will mix it up again to keep the game fun and dynamic.

The UI will get some additional polishing I'll wager. And damn this game plays smooth!! Liking it a lot.

the 'civ type' strategy game has existed for 23 years...Sid Meir's 'genius' is not the game itself..its the fact they he can make essentially the same game for 23 years and make money off of all of us that purchases it

what I want is a BRAND NEW type of strategy game....paradox europa series is good..distant worlds is good...ageod series is good ...total war series...all good 'starts' to break away from civ type clones

the day of civ type clones has gotten to me..23 years people of the same formulaic game..23 years of civ clones and you keep buying them

btw, beyond earth is the most boring game to watch on youtube...I can watch a civ5 game for hours and enjoy it...20 minutes of beyond earth and i'm done....I will not be purchasing this game ever

Sid 'jumped the shark' with this this iteration imho

I might purchase it...once the DLC is bundled and the game goes down in price....maybe.

Ugh, I shouldn't have downloaded the new AMD beta drivers that are supposed to enable mantle for this game. Now it won't launch on my primary display. I have 3 monitors and it will only launch on the side monitors..... bleh.

it was doing that for me with mantle on the older drivers i had, was hoping beta would fix it, i ended up just playing it window mode with mantle to get it on my primary monitor.

its weird because it shows up on the right monitor but you select stuff on your main monitor lol.

Ugh, now I'm trying it on the standard mode, non mantle, but it gives me a blank screen that says out of range. I remember having that problem with Civ5, but I can't remember how I fixed it. If I ctrl shift esc to bring up task manager I can magically see the game without out of range, but as soon as I click back on the game it goes out of range again. Stupid.

At least windowed mode works, but I hate windowed mode. So stupid.

So weird. If I go to the config file and disable full screen I can then launch the game windowed and enable full screen and it will work fine. But if I leave full screen enabled and launch I get out of range..........................

Sounds like a lot of people here with either low standards or desperately trying to justify buying the base-game (no expansions) at full or near-full price. Not seeing any enthusiastic reviews - everyone is giving mediocre reviews in what they write, despite claiming they are "glad they got it" or something to that effect.

It is exactly what many suspected, a Civ 5 reskin, and a dumbed down one at that in an attempt to money-grab even more with future expansions and/or DLCs.

I am not a big fan of Yogscast overall since they are such poor gamers and too juvenile at times, but I watch some of their videos for entertainment, since there seem to be so few youtube gamers that both:
a) have high production values
b) have more than one person playing the game in multiplayer, all with the same high quality audio/video/editing

They have done several Civ5 games (most are mediocre because most of them play extremely passively, are flat-out bad at strategy overall, or both), but a couple were more intense. Anyone know of any youtube/twitch alternatives with better players and the same high production values?

Anyway, after their last Civ5 game they stopped playing for a long time, waiting for Beyond Earth. They ended up doing a special pre-release "boot camp" game with some devs and just a few of their players. Well, right after BE came out, all of a sudden they started releasing episodes of a new Civ 5 game, but lo and behold, no mention of BE.

I think they realized that the game was pretty boring (for both them and viewers) in its current state compared to the more-developed Civ 5 (which still has its own issues). I am sure they are still going to play it at some point, but that is saying something when they were waiting to play it all this time, and then decided to go back to Civ 5 when it was released.

Anyway, Sid himself has less and less to do with every new version of Civ. He had very little if anything to do with Civ 5. And Civ 5 was where they jumped the shark. It was in horrible shape without the last expansion, and even now it pales in comparison to Civ 4 since they intentionally blocked modding support in Civ 5, making it near-impossible for players to fix remaining issues. This Beyond Earth money-grab would not have been possible if they had modding support, since the community by now would have already created mods far more advanced than Beyond Earth, with a strong possibility of having already created one based on similar concepts.

Edit:
Also, the current user metacritic score is 6.1.
