Official LG Curved Ultrawide 34UC97 thread

Well i game on my 34UM95 and it's fine. I don't have any black bars. I play CS Source and Borderlands with the occasional Guild Wars 2. I don't have any bars.

Understood, but I meant can you switch it to 2560x1440 (16:9) without image degradation? You know, for those games that don't support ultrawide and/or if you wanted to achieve a higher frame rate.

Heres the Post in FULL..

I know this has probably already been answered, but can you game at 2560x1440 on these monitors with black bars on the side? And would the image quality be affected at all (i.e. scaling)?

I have the flat screen LG 34" (34um95-p) and I game on it.

Obviously, the first choice for in game resolution setting is 3440 x 1440. Most new games have no problem with this, and for some older ones there are *.ini tweaks and even some program (cant remember the name, something like flawless widescreen or something like that) to force them to 3440 x 1440. Fallout New Vegas with the high res (4gb) texture pack looks SOOOO amazing on the LG 34" @ 3440 x 1440!!!!

If the game won't support it and/or you don't want to look around for ini tweaks, you can set it to 2560 x 1440 and there is NO quality loss from running the game outside the LCD's native res. Yes, you get the black vertical bars on the left and right, but very quickly they are not noticeable. I think because you are only changing the horizontal part of the resolution from 3440 to 2560, and not changing the vertical part, that you don't get the typical quality loss that you do with other LCDs when you try to game below their native res.

Hope this helps.

Oh thats odd, the links work fine for me on this forum here are the links in complete,

Ive been looking into this monitor as a replacement for 3 Dell u2414h monitors since i first saw what little news was released on it.
Just to Clarify there are 3 different versions of this monitor,
34UC97-S
34UC87-B black
34UC87-S gold
the only difference between the 97 and the 87 is that the 87 has a complete black back and stand, the stand can go up and down and it has a vesa mount compatability, which is puts it ahead of the 97 however it is referred to as the business version and seems to be only available in Austria and Germany, there doesnt seem to be any difference between the 87-s and the 87-b, at least not at the moment.

Here are several links that will interested those that want further information on the new LG curved monitors, theres very little info out atm and linus video review seems to be the only indepth review out atm apart from the 3 reviews from the German amazon page for the 97, linked below.

Video of the 97, 1:58 you can see some backlight bleed, however someone stated they had a similar issue with the 34um95 and the bezel was too tight so he loosened the bezel what he thought was backlight bleed was gone, so we will have to see.

I recently ask them if they would review the 97 or 87 and the responded with "Yes, we are hoping to review one of them at some point when samples become available to us" a review from tftcentral will ultimately be what most people are looking for, more questions than answer at the moment.

So after a bit of use, and using both the flat and curved versions, I love this monitor. Curved >flat for ultrawide

+

+Picture quality is fantastic(near identical to flat version)
+Curve is very slight and almost unnoticeable but yet very immersive
+Stand is perfect height, and much improved aesthetically over the flat version
+Back light bleed/IPS glow is minimal(near identical to flat version)
+No heavy grain matte finish

-

-No VESA mounting or adapter(at least not in my order)
-No G-sync
-60hz
-No height adjustable stand(only tilt)
-Could be slightly bigger at 37" with a 4k ultrawide res

So is it worth the $300 premium over the flat version?-YES, the curve really does surround your field of vision since you are sitting so close to the monitor, FPS and Driving games make the world of difference. Even with out the high refresh rate, this is currently my favorite monitor to use, will never go back to multi-monitor again.

Youve had a little time with it Martha how is with FPS Gaming , it has a 5 ms response time etc, but in person using it, how do you find it ? would you prefer a 144hz monitor to the side for fps gaming ?

Curious about this too. How is the input lag, ghosting, etc...

I currently have an HP ZR30w which I find pretty good for gaming. It was known as a fast IPS at the time it was released. I think the lack of a scalar and OSD helped the response times. I'm just wondering if moving to the LG would be about equal in terms of response/input lag as the ZR30w. If the LG is slower, I may reconsider...

The LG as measured by Leo-Bodnar testers from several review sites has the total input lag measured at ~18ms or just over 1 frame (1 frame @ 60Hz = 16.666ms). Now that's all at 1080p but mentioned specifically in the Anandtech article on the flat version its a damn fast scalar (tested with the panel in 1:1, aspect, and wide modes) as most other IPS panels had somewhere n the mid 20's on average. The only other 21:9 monitor in that test was an Asus IPS 1080p and had 9ms total input lag.

I actually haven't fired up a FPS game on it, mainly GW2, Gauntlet, MechWarrior and tested Hyrule Warriors on it to see what kind of scaling the WiiU did with it - actually surprisingly well, looked fantastic and no bars. I suppose MechWarrior is an FPS of sorts and I haven't noticed any situations where response time has screwed me - even if it did one would be hard pressed to tell because the game is so jittery and has wild framerate swings from poor optimization and hardware utilization anyway. Then again the last time I gamed on a TN panel was over 2 years ago and it was MMOs mostly so take my observation with a grain of salt.

Just want to understand what's meant by it not coming with a "vesa mount".

I have my own vesa compatible mounting system, and typically just throw away the stand a monitor comes with. Does this monitor have the 4 screw holes in the back that would allow me to attach my own vesa compatible monitor arm mount?

No it does not, that's generally what is meant by "VESA mount compatible" or "comes with VESA mount" - it's generally an indication as to whether or not it has the screw holes. This monitor lacks the screw holes.

Just want to understand what's meant by it not coming with a "vesa mount".

There supposedly is a VESA adapter for the UC97, that no one has ever seen.

It was reportedly supposed to ship with the monitor in "select" markets, and another member stated that LG told him they would ship this adapter free to customers upon request. Not sure how accurate that info is, though.

All I know for certain is that LG Korea's UC97 product page states 100x100 VESA "with adapter", and LG US's page states 100x100 VESA - and there are no 100x100 holes on the monitor.

I've read the whole thread and I'm confused. The 34UC97-S clearly states on the LG website 100x100 vesa compatibility. Obliviously the holes are not there but it sounds like there will be an adapter (not confirmed)?

Now the 34UC87 shows up and is clearly vesa mountable based on the pictures. Anyone know the final? Is there an adapter for the 34UC97 or is the LG site wrong, is vesa only on the 87?

I've been waiting for prices to fall on a flat version of this monitor, I'd step up and buy a 34UC97 but I need vesa.

I'll chime with a comment here since I have the flat screen LG 34" (which presumable games exactly the same as the curved model being discussed here), as well as the 144hz ROG Asus PG278Q "Swift".

For FPS gaming, the Swift is much nicer. The 144hz / g-sync speed of that thing is amazing (paired with a GTX 980) in games like BF4, Heroes and Generals, WarThunder, etc... But I elected to sell it on Ebay because the LG is "good enough" for normal gaming and acceptable in non competitive FPS play. There is definite blur when panning around in a game like BF4 or WarThunder (which I play a lot). But the huge screen is just so damn pretty in games like Fallout New Vegas (with the *.ini tweak and high res textures), War Game RedDragon, Guild Wars 2, Wasteland 2, etc.

Yeah, if my desk was bigger, I would love to have a way to quickly swap between the LG for non-fps games and the 144hz Asus for BF4 / Heroes and Generals etc.

Since I could only fit one (and I don't enjoy highly competitive online gaming anyway), I choose the LG.

PS: Make sure you use the DP input on the LG. If you use HDMI, you are limited to 50hz!!

I called LG. The rep confirmed that no VESA adapters come in the box. He said he couldn't find anything in the system about in adapter for the UC97 but the fact that the product page lists VESA compatibility means something should come out, but that specs can change without warning so there is no guarantee.

Kinda sucks cause the UC97-S will be easier to get in the States and looks sleeker, but if VESA is an absolute requirement then the UC87 might be the only option till an adapter is confirmed.

Here in the video ive already posted up top at 1:25 you can see the user attaching the stand to the 34UC97, showing the back and how its done, it shows clearly that the 97 come with no VESA compatible features and if there was an adapter you could attach im not sure how that would even be possible .

In the 3rd photo from the bottom you are able to see the back of the 34UC87 and the VESA supported back, here you can see its a flat back however in the video above at 58 seconds in you can see there is a feature sticking out of the 97 without any stand on.

you know there could be a possibility of opening up the back of a 97 and drilling your own VESA holes, surely the framework inside is the same as the 87, it would be risky but you never know

All the photos below are of the 34UC87

Someone with metalworking experience should be able to craft a VESA mount for the UC97. The stand just screws into the monitor. Unfortunately, I am not that person. :D

I wish Dell would hurry up and announce specs and pricing for their version. I'm hoping it will be cheaper (no Thunderbolt) and have a VESA mount with the same or better quality electronics and panel.

In a way I'm relieved that I'm not going to have to pay top dollar for this monitor. No matter how good the rest of it is, it's useless to me without vesa mounting ability. I've gotten used to using an Ergotron LCD arm mounting and can't imagine using a monitor without it.

I'll have to make do with the more affordable non-curved 34" monitors.

I'm amazed why they'd leave this out for their high end product and prevent people using better mounting systems. It's just 4 little holes.

I'm also accepting this will be a no go for me without VESA. I'll wait for the Samsung S34E790C. It also lacks Thunderbolt so hopefully will be a bit cheaper and has VESA holes which can be seen in pictures. Only issues is not likely to be available till 2015, but oh well.

Which Ergotron? I'm selling and MX right now because it didn't give much space under the monitor. Looks like an LX will meet my needs.

Got the Ergotron LX LCD arm. Its strength rating is lower than the MX but, with 7 different joints and pivot points, that means you get lot more flexibility and it gives plenty of space under the monitor. Can rotate the whole thing vertically very easily.

It's officially rated at 25 lbs, but that seems a conservative estimate and it can definitely take more. Like the MX, it's a very solid and well built arm.

If anyone wants an LX, but wants to save a few bucks, this is the same thing: http://www.amazon.com/HP-BT861AT-Si...d=1413847020&sr=8-1&keywords=hp+monitor+mount

I ordered one for use with my 34UM94 and it works great. Even has Ergotron stickers on it and tells you to contact Ergotron if you have questions. Warranty is shorter, however.

EDIT: I guess I should point out that this model is all black, not the fancy shiny metal of the LX.

It feels fine to me. While I am not sensitive to blur or input lag, there is a definite noticeable difference to a 120hz monitor, I would use the 34Uc97 over a 144hz G-Sync Panel. Its a compromise I am willing to make as I would much rather have the Curve+IPS colors+Ultrawide vs TN 144hz.

Now if only LG could make a G-sync 144hz version of this monitor it would be God-Tier :p

Martha, I'm thinking of selling my 34UM95 and getting this monitor. As it doesn't have VESA compatibility, is the height fine the way it is? I'm assuming the stand can't adjust the height correct?

I can do away with the VESA mounts but I would need to be able to adjust the height to a somewhat comfortable level on my desk.

wow.. this Display looks delicious. I had one of the old Westy 37"'s "back in the day", when it died, bought a Dell 27

Im a wow player, as opposed to a twitcher.. I see Martha's response from yesterday with FPS.. any MMO players have one yet? any issue?

I would love someone a very long time if they could post screenshots of Final Fantasy XIV on this bad boy.

I'm literally on the verge of pulling the trigger on one, that would push me over.

XViper, What sleep issue?
The monitor does sleep if you leave it for a while [you can change in windows setting].
But when you move the mouse or touch a key on the keyboard it wakes up.

I want this monitor and can easily afford it, though to me, $1,300 is a tremendous amount of money for a PC monitor. Technology moves so fast, soon they'll have something out much more superior to this monitor. I just bought the 29-inch version, though I'm debating between keeping it or the Auria 27-inch.

There's a sleep issue with this monitor. When going to sleep, it cycles the message going to sleep mode non-stop. It never goes to sleep. I'm on triple 290x's connected via DP. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one either. There was one other person here that had a Nvidia setup and he also had that same issue. I believe it's from the monitor. I plan to buy the 34UC97 this Friday and sell the 34UM95.

Anyone have a decent calibration to set it at?

Besides the curve and the VESA mount, the specs are the same right? It appears the refresh rate and all that is the same. I play GW2 so the immersion would be awesome. I buy one monitor every couple of years so I don't have a huge issue spending 1300 bucks as long as it will last me.

what do you guys think of this display vs. a 5k display like the new IMAC coming out? It will only be a matter of time before those panels start showing up. the cinema display will probably be 1200 or so assuming it follows the increase in IMAC prices....

Depends on if DisplayPort 1.2 will support 5k or not. Otherwise, you're going to be waiting for DP 1.3 video cards.

hmmm. so would you get this 27" 5k display, vs. the other displays out there in the price range? 28" 4k TNs, 34" 21:9s, etc?

For a 5K 27" to make sense, you need to have an OS capable of doing scaling properly. Pretty sure that this means OSX currently.

The 34" 21:9 is tempting because it doesn't need any scaling. A 40" 4K monitor would also be sweet, but I don't have a computer that could drive one properly.

I'm sure you can get a 280x, 290x and that would be able to drive it fine assuming you dont do HQ gaming. the 5k monitor in the imac is driven by a pretty mediocre video card.

the problem is a 40" 60hz 4k display is probably going to be a fortune... I'm leaning towards a 34" now, and then get a LARGE 4k TV with PC inputs for all my multimedia content later... man, but its tough. before there was only one choice for me... 4k. now theres so many other factors, and choices.

Well i used to have the 34UM95 for one week and i returned it. It was amazing. I just had one problem with it. The text on both sides of the screen was hard to see, and i had to move my head from one side to the other. I just wished that the screen would fold just a bit. The 34UC97 makes that wish come true. But everything else is the same. I even had backlight bleeding with the 34UM95 and i have it now with the 34UC97. Don't really care.

interesting. Does the curve help that much? I mean, Im used to working on 2 or 3 screen setups at work, so I guess that moving the head a little bit doesnt hurt. but it is a 350$ premium for the curve, so thats a little painful.

one other observation is that the "height" of the monitor looks pretty short. I was comparing some reviews to an IMAC 27" and it looked like the height was considerably shorter than the imac. so thats going to take some getting used to.

To be honest, i didn't believe it would until i sat down in front of it. Even my wife was skeptical, and she was concerned that i was paying to much for nothing. But, Yes it does fix that issue i can see both edges very clearly.
I guess when it comes to height it depends on your desk setup. I have a table and chair from ikea, and the top part of the monitor is parallel with my view.
Adding pivot and height adjustment would have been great for this price mark

I've always preferred the display to be up higher versus lower because I'd be hunched over. Does the stand have clips to hold the wires?
