Apple 5k Display

How are people here still not getting it?

2500 dollars is the price of the entire freaking computer. Not just the display !! The display alone should cost far less than the quoted 2500 dollars.
None of these display makers LG samsung dell etc will even remotely attempt to release a non tn 5k display for anything less than an absolute rip off. In fact Asus the great charges close to a grand for freaking tn.

Dell the great wants 2500 only for the display. Soak on that for moment. Apple was so famous for being overpriced till today. This though is a major turn around.

Tbh, they are partly "famous for being overpriced" because people will hate for the sake of hating.

Also, 2009:
1440p iMac = $1699
1440p Dell monitor = $1100

People still claimed they could build a better pc for cheaper...

Since people keep throwing out the 5K Dell monitor, has anyone seen a comparison review?

I'm very curious how the Dell compares to the iMac when it comes to color accuracy and response time. Resolution isn't everything. Too bad Apple is notorious for not releasing detailed tech specs.

It'll be using something like MST to utilize 2 Displayport 1.2 connections, and will thus be all buggy and shitty anyways.

Exactly. I was expecting a 4K display today... Thought there was no way they'd do a 5K and it be under $4K starting. I think it's a fine deal. Ordered it the minute the store went live.

What configuration did you order? I went through the configuration just for fun, b/c I'm not in the market. If I was going to order, I'd be in the $3500 range for a config I'd be satisfied with.

Nope, doesn't use MST. From Anandtech:

Apple was kind enough to confirm that they are driving the new iMac’s display with a single TCON. This is not a multi-tile display, but instead is a single 5120x2880 mode.

As they point out in the article, Apple is likely overclocking the DP interface. I guess it's easier for them to go out of spec as they have complete control over what hardware is included in the iMacs.

But because of this, you cannot run the 5K iMac as an external display, which to me, makes it not even comparable to the Dell 5K. One is a computer, the other is a monitor, without any usage overlaps. I suspect that a standalone 5K Cinema Display won't be released until thunderbolt 3 is ready (DP1.3 compatible).

In OSX, all text and UI elements (for all applications) are scaled to the appropriate size. This is one area where Apple's OSX is far ahead of Windows.

And this is an unfortunate reality for me. I'm not a cost-sensitive consumer but I do requires a windows machine for my profession. If I had effective windows compatibility on this machine I would buy it in a heartbeat but I've had a lot of difficulty getting windows installations to scale properly on Apple devices :(

1. windows is terrible
2. building your own machine with high quality parts is expensive and offers no warranty on the build
3. 2500 is good as people suggested.

osx and linux are superior os's to windows stability VIRUS wise especially. Of course no one could game on this 1:1. that's not what its meant for. I know a really nice gf of mine that would use this to the maximum as an artist. No one needs such high ppi aside from a graphic artist or photographer.

Or programmers or power users or users who need a lot of desktop real-estate...

Honestly I feel Mac OS X is pretty horrible too as they try to dumb things down too much and don't give you enough control over the machine.

I would buy this in a heartbeat if I could actually get 5k out of it running linux but I have no clue how apple is driving this thing so I doubt it will work in anything but Mac OS X ATM. Already verified 4k does not work on windows (atleast on current drivers).

How is it dumbing things down? Not to shift the topic of the thread altogether, but OS X does give you a bash command line terminal and loads of utilities and customization -- they're just not front and center. It feels like a lot of Linux/Windows loyalists mistake ease of use for reduced features, as if you're more of a "real" techie the harder it is to use your computer. To me, a good interface lets you focus more on the apps you're running and less on the basics.

As it stands, the likelihood is that you wouldn't want to run anything but OS X on the 5K iMac for a while anyway. Both Linux and Windows are much worse at scaling on high-res displays, and Apple has likely done driver optimizations for 5K that haven't even been considered on other platforms so far. Tim Cook's "only Apple" line might be tiring at times, but here it's absolutely true -- this only works because Apple sells an all-in-one machine where it controls both the hardware and software. If you want 5K that isn't absurdly expensive and glitchy, you may have to get a Mac... at least, for a while.

I don't really understand the "dumbing it down" nonsense either. As someone who spends a good bit of my day in Windows or Solaris, I just don't see it. I don't recall wanting to control or customize anything in OSX where I was hampered in any way.

When I first started using OSX, it was like Linux but polished and with nicer fonts. You've got Terminal, developer tools, and you can install something like Fink if you want to use open source Unix apps.

My only gripe with OSX are the power controls in comparison to say Win7. It lacks settings to stay awake, etc. There are some apps that try to solve this problem such as NoSleep, but they don't always work after an OS upgrade.

System Preferences > Energy Saver > tell it to never put the computer or display to sleep. You can also tell it to wake for network access.

I've seen the 5K iMac display in person, meanwhile... it's pretty amazing. Take the pixel density of a Retina MacBook Pro and spread it across 27 inches. Great colour accuracy and lighting uniformity. It's a shame that you couldn't really replicate this as a stand-alone display right now, even if you wanted to. Dell's 5K display may turn out well, but it's still a hack of sorts.

everyone who can afford 75k dollars a year at columbia university and new york university in the EE department, or computer science or computer engineering who is from some other country sent by their rich soulless parents has mac pro gear for their laptops. 5k imac will be standard for dorm room this year.
