This is just wrong on so many levels. The Indianapolis International Airport has a new guest service representative and it comes in the form of a remote controlled Segway fitted with an iPad. The invention comes with a live face via the iPad, future two way communications with a live representative and a polo shirt. :D

The robot doesn't have a name? How about Mr. Slave To Some Lazy Bastards. Seriously, walk a little, have a little human interaction.

put the fat guy on the segway with the ipad. you would save the price of the extra polo shirt.

This was ripped off of South Park!

That fatass on Facetime needs an excuse to walk around the airport, and it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy him sneakers than it is a segway and iPad. And remember, the company is likely paying for his health insurance, which would be drastically reduced if he weren't so overweight and sedentary.

So now they are paying for thousands of dollars in hardware for something that doesn't eliminate a human.

Buy the guy a new nice pair of shoes and quality insoles every 6 months. Not only will you have better face to face interaction, but you will have a healthier employee as well. Coupld that with the obvious cost savings.

Why not have someone walk and help ppl out? wtf mankind...

Getting Indian slaves to do customer service via the ipad screen is probably cheaper than hiring somebody to do it...

/So now they can outsource the airport's customer service reps from India like the rest of the IT world?

They could have at least gotten a pic of a male model that looks like a salesman and two arms coming out of the shirt pointing at you so it looks like hes trying to sell ya something. ;)

actually I believe this was ripped from Big Bang Theory. at least its the 1st thing that came to mind when I saw this.

Also in The Good Wife season 5 premiere:

It ends up getting shoved into a broom closet. If you're looking for them on Google, the phrase is "telepresence robot".

I think the idea behind this particular manifestation is that one human would control many robots. Escorting people around an airport (or any other very large complex) is a labor-intensive task consisting almost entirely of wasted time; you have to go to where the person is, spend the whole time of the escort just leading them to where they need to go, and then you need to walk back to where you were stationed. One human could probably control a hundred or more of these robot escorts, since the robots can find their way to the destination and back without manual control. The Facetime is just there in case the humans being escorted change their minds about where to go or realize they asked for the wrong destination.

So, this is probably the first non-ridiculous use for a telepresence robot that I've heard of.

With the Ebola outbreak this kind of robots are the only safe way to work actually. They should install UV lamps on them also to disinfect on the run.

Yep, first thing that came to my mind when I read the article. Thought it was hilarious at the time.

This is stupid. What about a live person? (The shirt is funny - is it supposed to humanize the bad idea?)

I guess people would walk up to it and start poking it in his/her eyes?

So the employee controlling the bot is on the 4th floor? What is the point of this? Temporary hype? After the "Oooooh! Aaaaaaah!" wears off, it's just an extra, and expensive, middle man between customers and supposedly-helpful reps.

Well crap I was just in IND this morning and didn't see this article in time to check it out.

The funny part about this is that these robots will likely end up running over small children and "anxiety pets".

We actually have two similar tele-presence robots at our office... check out a video here the news did... the robot comes partyway through the video... works a lot better than what that airport is using.. wonder why they went with that cheap solution over the one we resell:
