Hey everyone, I'm trying to research the best gaming/fps monitor for my buddy. Shooting for best response time/reliability as he is on a serious budget. All help/input appreciated.

Thanks!

Get a used CRT on eBay or Craigslist. CRTs have refresh rates up to 200Hz, resolutions up to 2400p, instant response time, no input lag, true multiscanning, always-on LightBoost, and better blacks and color than the absolute best IPS panel.
If this must be a LCD, get a glossy QX2710 or glossy DP2710 and overclock it (avoid MST models, as those have severe input lag and are not overclockable). All other high refresh rate LCDs have a matte coat that absolutely destroys image quality.

Do not listen to rabidz7 as he is a known troll and/or is a complete moron. Also, everything he mentions is more than likely totally out of budget.

Speaking of which, what kind of budget are we talking? Your best bet would most likely be the BenQ XL2411Z @ $255.

Budget is less than $300, I had been leading him towards the $265 Asus on amazon:

Would that Benq be better?

BenQ XL2420TE

This its better... and yes its better than the Asus..

and again i have to say do not listen rabidz7 its a troll, he don't know what are talking about, he is probably a 12-13 old year boy trolling, its the less qualified person in the world to take any comment seriously. ;)

A QX2710 costs the same price and is better than that matte POS.

And if they wanted a 1440p display and could utilize 96hz+ at that resolution, then perhaps they'd go that route. He's on a budget; one would assume being on a budget he is not capable of driving a 1440p display. Please stop posting.

The BenQ would be better because it does not use PWM. Side effects of PWM

PWM is notorious for causing headaches as well as directly affecting motion performance.

If they can't drive a 1440p display at 100Hz+, they should get a CRT. A matte, TN, LCD should be thrown right in the trash can and never used, as they suck horribly and can't even display black or colors correctly. That's the reason that I don't even consider 4K monitors to be worth it.

Thank you for backing me up.

The BenQ XL2420TE is a fine unit, but alas, it's an older model. The newer version is the XL2420Z http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2420Z-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Professional/dp/B00HE61SOA/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

The key differences between the XL2411Z and XL2420Z are merely aesthetic and in no way effect performance. The key differences are outlined in the first paragraph of this post

"Some attributes seen on the 20Z but not 11Z at the front include; touch sensitive buttons, a straight bottom bezel, red accents and the ‘S-Switch’ rapid preset selector and OSD controller. Both models have fully adjustable stands."

The BenQ XL2411Z meets the budget nicely and has the same performance as it's bigger brother.

hard to argue with that.. =).. you're right.. but in a giving of personal experience i've had more problems with the 2420Z than my actual 2420T which i was going to replace but that was only related to Lightboost ON 24/7 and brightness =D nothing of issue at out of the box settings.. :D

Awesome, I appreciate narrowing it down. I'll tell him to get the 11z. You guys rock.

Only get a matte LCD if you want horrible color and sparkles all over the screen. All 144Hz-stock LCDs are matte. Do not get those nasty pieces of crap. Instead, get a CRT or glossy overclockable IPS.

^vg248qe's matte surface wasn't too bad
I removed my vg248qe's film a while ago using this guide (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1674033). it should be pretty safe if you do everything carefully

Get a used CRT on eBay or Craigslist. CRTs have refresh rates up to 200Hz, resolutions up to 2400p

if a crt can do 200hz at all, it's only at very low resolutions (~ 640x480)
2400p on a crt is quite pointless as the resolution would already be limited by the aperture grill pitch and the electron beam spot profile. and you'd be limited to a refresh rate of 50hz which will make your eyes bleed.

but yea on a budget, a used crt would be far better than any similarly priced used or new lcd.

lol, since when can the Qnix oc to 160hz? The gamma would rise to >3.2, the contrast would drop significantly and the screen uniformity would also be horrible. Even if it were possible, the monitor would look horrible. A 2400p CRT? Need to make a special [R]etard sub forum for a few posters who keep making stupid threads, posts, and asking for, but ignoring the help they receive.

I destroyed my VG248QE removing the matte coat. It is true that the CRTs that do 200Hz only do it at 480p, but it doesn't matter much in twitch-based FPS games. Yes, it is true that 2400p is pointless on CRTs when done for sharpness, but it can be useful when you need to fit a lot of stuff on the screen. It's also 48Hz, not 50Hz, for 2400p on the FW900.

oh right i remember your thread on blurbusters :p
did you feel significant adhesion between the film and the polarizer? for me it came off pretty easily and smoothly. for mine, i'd say the adhesiveness was between peeling off scotch tape and peeling off a plastic protective film

I've seen a QNIX do 144Hz, so 24 more hertz shouldn't be much of an issue. The FW900 can do 48Hz at 3840x2400.

No.

Yes, the genius behind this: http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1127

His pastime is apparently commenting on tech he's utterly clueless about.

I don't think I soaked the film long enough. I ended up taking parts of the polarizer with the film.

I was tweaking on meth when I posted that. Please disregard it. Sorry.

Hey, you know what? I must have been tweaking on Meth to ave ever taken you seriously.

This link plus my earlier experience with you trying relentlessly to upgrade a dead-end Apple G4 computer = goes on ignore list :D

You can kep your meth trips AND your confidential apple schematics to yourself!
