This might have cropped up somewhere before, or perhaps everyone knew this ahead of me, but just in case someone hasn't heard of this... I was talking with a nVidia rep today and this is what he had to say about Surround (3 monitor setup) with G-sync.

(Rashid is the NVidia rep)

Rashid: Hi, my name is Rashid. How may I help you?

me: Good afternoon. Quick question for you!

me: I see with the release of the GTX 980, many card manufacturers are releasing them with triple display ports. Does this mean I can plug in 3 DP monitors (say the PG278Q from Asus) and run surround with G-sync? Or does surround with G-sync not exist yet?

Rashid: You can definitely do a Surround with ASUS PG278Q.

Rashid: It supports Surround with 4K monitors as well.

me: With G-sync enabled on all 3 monitors too?

me: Or is G-sync and surround still seperate

Rashid: Let me confirm that. Kindly stay online for a while.

me: sure

<I said I had a couple more questions too>

me: 1) Can I run 5 monitors off of the 980 cards, or are they still limited to 4?

me: 2) If I'm to run a SLI setup with PG278Q monitors (which are DP only) - where do I plug the monitors in. All into card 1, or can I do the same thing as with previous cards (different ports) with 2 DP in the first card and 1 DP in the second card?

Rashid: For the Gsync+Surround query, it will work with the latest driver.

me: Mind = blown

Rashid: Use 2+1 configuration in SLI to make sure that there is a balance.

Rashid: It's limited to 4 monitors.

me: Got it. Last question, is the 980 DP version 1.2 or 1.3?

me: Or is that vendor specific?

Rashid: That's DP 1.2 version.

Rashid: Irrespective of the vendor.

And that's the story!

That would be great if it's true, but I wouldn't spend money based on what the online chat guy says.

Should have also asked him if DSR works with Surround. I get the feeling it doesn't.

In my experience, the NVidia chat guys have been pretty good with prior products, I don't see a reason not to 100% trust him now. Of course I'd love for someone to actually test those claims too - that'll put the whole thing to rest.

I was going to ask more tbh, but it was the end of my work day and I wanted to go home :p

Wouldn't that be kinda redundant anyways? The whole purpose of doing DSR is to have higher resolution on a single screen. If you upscale it with DSR AND split it across more screens won't you end up with pretty much the same image quality as you would with a single monitor and upscaled to a higher res? Not to mention the possible performance hit you'd take doing DSR AND surround at the same time. I can't seeing that turning out well at all, even if it were supported.

I really hope that works. I have 3 980's in the mail, and I am planning on also getting either 1 or 3 of the Asus Swift. I'm just concerned that 7680x1440 will be too intensive for most games. If G-Sync does, in fact, work that would make the situation a lot better.

... you're not running 3 x GTX980 with the rig in your sig are you?

For what it's worth I do remember reading that g-sync surround is supported with the latest drivers (but only on 970/980)

Well, it's nice to hear it works. I wouldn't mind upgrading my VG248QE monitors except for the fact that I need to be able to use more than 1 input and DP input switches are stupid expensive right now.

No, it's not redundant. DSR would have to run your games at 11520x2160 for a Surround monitor configuration.

Internally, this is the same as running three 4k monitors in Surround. Externally, this means EACH monitor has 4k worth of information down-sampled to it.

People have already done triple-4k Eyefinity and Surround. Assuming you have the money for a good SLI setup, this isn't much of an issue.

Let me know how that works for you. I'm going to be getting a new rig myself soon and your parts / spec look fairly similar to what I have in mind.

Just got my 980s in and can confirm gsync surround works with 3x rog swifts connected to one card.

@jtw472

I am thinking of getting a very similar setup. How is the viewing angles with 3 TN panels, do the side panels look good? Does ULMB work in surround + SLI? If so, do you think that perhaps that would be better than G-sync? What kind of frames are you getting on modern games at high/ultra? Any issues with panels and surround in general?

I don't have the Swift, but I do have 3 VG248QE screens - I think the best thing you can do with 3 TN monitors is make sure you get enough angle on them - probably something like 20 degrees - give or take.

Don't use gsync. Use ULMB. You spent $2400 on displays, so don't deal with motion blur.

3 in one card? Is there any performance difference if you do 2 and 1 instead? I'd be curious to see how hard the performance hit is on more games.
