NVIDIA Maxwell GPU - GeForce GTX 980 Video Card Review @ [H]

From page 11.
"Suffice it to say, the GeForce GTX 980 provided the smoothest performance, but all three cards delivered the same experience."

[H] please try not to diminish the quality of your reviews with stupid statements like the above. It doesn't look good on you.

Page 12
"4K performance is not bottlenecked on the GeForce GTX 980. For the most part it is faster than the GeForce GTX 780 Ti and Radeon R9 290X. There are some games where it will break even on performance to 780 Ti."

Although the GTX was best in show, no mention that the 290x bested the 780 Ti and GTX 980 in 2 of the 5 games benched at 4K? No mention huh.

Looking forward to dual/triple 4K review.

Its a thing of the past at those TDPs and prices.

depending on what you want to do and what games you play, i would say sell your 680s and buy two 970s. you aren't going to notice a difference between 680 SLI and a 980.

Also need to chop 10% off those 770 scores to account for the clock speed and bandwidth changes ;)

Personally I'm picking one up to replace my SLI 680's so I can move away from maintaining dual GPU's without loosing my current performance level (and in some instances gain some, or a lot if it's GPU memory related).

Personally, I picked up 2 980s to replace my 2 680s because 2 years from now no one will give a shit, except I'll have had better performance for 2 years. :D

They matched the ROPs and include better clocks, its no surprise to see the 980 surpass the 290x. If they increase the ROPs on the 390x (doubled?) 4k will be obliterated on that GPU. But so will your electricity :D

What does that have to do with my post? Points bro, stick to the points or your not worth responding to. Reading 101

I was just playing with you :p. GTX 980 does trounce everything and could be a dream combination for Sli.
Trounce? No as it does not even beat the 780 Ti in every case. Really just depends on what games and what settings being used.

this new gpu ''racing'' is becoming more and more like F1 today, they tried to make the cars more efficient while being fast, and result is they're not efficient and definitely not faster. the jump in performance is not that great, i personally don't care about TDP, i just want performance, just like in F1. just my opinion.

Then over clock the heck out of an efficient GPU would be my answer ;)

Yeah totally  Except a lot of Titan owners aren't the typical gamer looking for bang-for-buck, and compute and professional applications that benefit from Titan can't "wait 1.5 years". That's silly.

I think its a fair assumption that 95% of Titan owners didn't buy them for compute or professional applications. They bough them for gaming because it was the fastest card available at that time. It just so happened to be grossly overpriced compared to any other card before it. The Titan era has pretty much passed now though since the 780 effectively accomplished the same performance for a lot less money.

Not sure if he was actually being serious, but honestly, 1.5 years and still having top tier performance means Titan owners got pretty good mileage out of their GPUs. Not like the 980 walks all over the Titan either, but it is a nice upgrade.

The situation is different if you bought a Titan recently, of course, but it was obvious Nvidia wasn't going to launch a new GeForce GTX flagship that was slower than previous cards... so I don't know what to say there.

Sure they did, but at a huge expense. The 780 owners will get just as much mileage out of their cards for a LOT less money. It just worked out that way.

I'm looking forward to the 980 SLI results. At the current TDP, a pair of 8 GB 980s would be very nice. I'd move my 780 Ti to a Steambox rig.

How come you guys didn't select Dead Rising 3 as one of your games to test how well it performs on these new Maxwell cards?

It is one of the most demanding PC games I have ever played... my GTX 780s can't hold a steady 60 FPS @ 1080p on it.

Seems like the perfect candidate to test how well the new GPUs perform.

So, anyone know which overclocks better - 970 or 980?

according to guru3d they both overclock about the same, ~1500 MHz core boost clock +/- 50 MHz. tpu has their fastest 970 overclocking to 1454 MHz with their only reviewed 980 overclocking to 1489 MHz.

1 x DL-DVI, 3 x DP 1.2 (eDP 1.4) and 1 x HDMI 2.0

Though I did see an AIB version -- though it was probably a 980 -- with one additional DVI port.

Good to know, I'm hoping to get a card sometime in the next year with at least 2x HDMI 2.0. I'll keep my eyes open for a custom card.

Isn't that exactly how super sampling works? Toms Hardware described it pretty much as having the exact same performance hit as super sampling too... I just don't see the difference. You could force super sampling in the driver for games that didn't support it I thought.

You can force it in some games.

Not everything plays well with the nv control panel.

you guys really need to do more kinds of benchmarks. your "highest playable settings" are not the same highest playable settings for me, as i target 120 fps, so your benchmarks really only tell me that i can't play at whatever settings you use.

Why?

Epeen?

I know that as an MMO player my FPS needs are not the same as a twitch-reflex first person shooter in competition.

120 is a bit over the top though, been some time since I've done any hard care shooting.... you really need that to play?

I'd like to see Elder Scrolls Online version... they cant make everyone happy.

Be nice though if more of us could see some benches for favorite/current games.

I get headaches from a lot of 60hz monitors. Monitors at 120/144hz are what I use for gaming as well as work.

Please use your head and think a bit before slamming someone and sounding like a douche hat.

No need to be such a butthurt oftie about it. He asked a legitimate question. No need to start sperging out just because he suggested that maybe it was for epeen.

As an owner of 120hz monitors myself I know what you mean but their process is very time consuming. It's our burden as people who own a rare setup to extrapolate the performance data they provide to get a rough idea of how the card performs in general compared to the competition. finding your own playable settings is on you. As different as our playable settings are from theirs, their review is to point out which card has the most horsepower compared to the competition not how we should be setting our in game settings. If you were going by that, you'll need to keep matching your computer build to be just like theirs . ;)

If you heard slamming that was you being a female hygiene product and not me.

Please assume not everyone has the same viewpoints and negativity you do when reading tone into plan text.

I will assume you were having a very bad headache when posting.

I find 75 hz takes care of headaches for me (or a monitor 40" or larger) I have reduced headaches at work significantly by getting everyone to set monitors to 75.

I wouldn't play Quake at 60 Hz ever again now that we went full cycle with LCDs. SP games at 120 Hz is a bit too much to ask, though. Not at high settings.

We don't use leaked drivers, we use official drivers from NVIDIA and AMD directly. We asked AMD prior to the review the best driver to use right now, which we do for every launch review.

Ok, that is cool then.

You will be in for a treat once the 14.x are actually released. It is a very nice driver set from what I have seen and others have reported.

^THIS. it really amazes me there are not some 120/144hz (even if they are shitty TN panels) GPU reviews (hope you can do this one day Kyle) but realize I am on the edge when it comes to above 60hz. The reality is even my old eyes can see my Dell U3011 lagging when pressed and knowing the FPS in game are not being delivered to the panel (currently have an Overlord IPS at 120hz with 2- 780's). It is alot of work to get it to work (Vbios OC's on GPUs. driver pixel patching (thanks TOASTYX!) and more).

Just wanted to add my 2 cents these new cards look decent for the price and will handle sub 4k setups (even mine) well. Being Hard cost money and time and I think that is why we are all here and read regularly and all opinions are valid for that person.

Great Review as usual! Can't wait to see the 970 sli review.
