I just made a spur of the moment purchase and not sure if it was wise or not. I usually research the shit out of stuff before I buy, but one of NewEgg's "Shell Shocker" Wednesday was for the EVGA GeForce GTX780 SuperClocked 3GB GDDR5 384bit (03G-P4-2784-KR) for $419. I thought about it a second and decided to jump on it without any research other then the reviews on the Egg and Amazon. I checked CamelCamelCamel.com and seen Amazon's lowest price for this card was about $100 more, so that also made me jump. My existing card is a dinosaur these days, a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5870 (100281-3SR) so I know this is a huge upgrade for me and this old 5870 card will be good for my nephew's computer. But as I've not followed the Video card upgrades lately, I have no idea what's on the horizon and was hoping to get some opinions from those of you who are up to date. Was this a good deal?

Thanks from an "old guy" who is out of the loop these days.

p.s. ... Sorry Kyle, I forgot to use your link :( It was a quick discussion and I'm out of practice. The thought hit me after I checked out.

Just keep an eye on the reviews of the 970's and 980's coming out (supposedly tomorrow). Rumor has it the 970 has an MSRP of $399 and will probably be slightly faster than the 780.

That is definitely a good price on the 780. I sold mine used for just shy of that a few weeks ago.

I think you'll regret not waiting

Had he bought a brand other than EVGA, I'd agree with that. But now he's got the option to do a Step Up, so it's all good.

For forgetting to use the [H]ardOCP commissioned buying link you deserve 12 Lashes with a cat of 9 tails whip :p

I think you should cancel the purchase and wait (litterally) a few hours for the NDA to break on the GTX 980/970. The 970 will probably be faster and cost around the same, use less power, have better technology etc.. etc..

Dear old guy,
It sounds like a decent deal to me. I went from a 5870 (which is a great card really) at 1920*1200 monitor at the time - to a GTX 770 2GB and everything more or less doubled in frame rates. Not sure what res you game at, but I think you'll do absolutely fine with that card for a long time.

That's true, but in that case you now have to wait for shipping three times! 780 shipped to you, 780 shipped to EVGA, 970 shipped to you.

Haha... figures! Too late to cancel as it is already in route. NewEgg has a warehouse about 6hr away (Memphis Tn to St. Louis Mo) O well. It still a huge improvement over what I got. I may have to look into that step up program though once I find more info on these new cards and their prices. My nephews Vid card (9800) has been acting up over the last week or so, so I told him i'd look into upgrading mine and give him my old 5870... then this deal came along and I jumped. Sucks that I'm so out of touch with what use to be a great hobby of mine. (Gaming/upgrading) ... Getting old and having no time sucks! lol

Thanks for taking it "easy" on me Exodia! lol... I can take 12 lashes.

LOL, enjoy the card my friend, despite what I said It's a great card at a heck of a good price. The timing is the only reason to give you any doubt that the deal was solid. ;)

The 780 is a great card and will be an amazing upgrade to your 5870 ;). I'm sure you'll be blown away by its performance.

The $329.99 970 4GB launching tomorrow would have been a better deal, as it will be as fast or slightly faster. But what's done is done, and the 780 is still a nice card.

$329.99 is what it's rumored to be... We'll know for sure in a couple of hours.

right so he wasted $90 for an outdated card with less memory

And that is pretty short sighted of you. He can use his step up with EVGA and get the 980 within 90 days, which would give him time to save up the extra $150 or so to step up.

Don't be snob.

He can apply for Stepup within 90 days, but it'll be ages before he actually sees the step-up. I've been through step-ups several times when a new generation launched, always a nightmare, its like a walmart stampede on black friday with everyone trying to get in the queue at the same time. The 780 was so backlogged it took 5 months before it finally showed up. With as hot as the 970 and 980 are going to be now that prices and specs are out, the stepup queue is going to be miles long.

@OP: I would return the GTX780 to Newegg ASAP and get yourself a GTX970 when available.

he can step up to a gtx 980 but not back down to a gtx 970. my point is if he needs gtx 780 performance he could have bought a gtx 970 for 329.

hmm... with that price, i wonder if going SLI with them would be worth it.

what is the 980 supposed to be?

$549.99. All the reviews have the GTX 970 overclocking to 980 levels easily. Get two of them and that's basically GTX 980 SLi for only $110 more than the price of one GTX 980. Of course the GTX 980 OCs pretty high above stock itself... It all depends on what kind of performance you need vs how much you spending cash you have. :p

I got to stop thinking about this. It's making me sick knowing what I know now. I can't refuse shipment as it was already delivered to the office. What's really making me sick is I've had my mind set on the 770 for months now, just waiting for it to go below $300. ... sigh ...

You can still return it unopened.

dude you just bought the card, even if you opened it you can return and ask for a new model, just give some excuse like the card doesn't fit your system or whatever, it's not like you'll ask for a refund, you'll get another card

People calling with bullshit return reasons is why NewEgg can sometimes be a pain in the ass on returns. He bought the card with zero research, he is an adult, and he should just eat the 15% restocking fee instead of make up an excuse.

These are the reasons NewEgg will waive the restocking fee, none apply:
Carrier damage
Defective product
Product does not match advertising
Received incorrect product
Product was an extra item not ordered

Definitely return it if possible!!!!

Nvidia just seriously torpedoed their used market.

Feel really bad for people who purchased 780 & titan cards.

Totally agree ocellaris. That's not me for sure. I'll probably keep the card and suck it up for the 780 is a damn fine card as is, especially coming from a 5870. What's eating me is how these brand new cards (specifically the 970) is selling far cheaper then last years models. When was the last time new release video cards of better specs and performance sold for less or even equal to the current pricing of the previous years cards? Never. So that's what I feel suckered by NewEggs "shell shocker". I knew buying the card that it was likely to be replaced soon as the fall has always been the traditional video card season. I just didn't expect the newer cards to be cheaper, but still far better then it.

Don't listen to the hall monitor, and don't be a sucker. Return the card and get a 970. The only reason they Shell Suckered the card was because they knew the 9 series was about to come into stock and realized they better hurry up and clear inventory.

Do the online chat for the return rather than the web form, and there's usually not much resistance in getting the stocking fee waived.

This. I'd return it unopened and bitch at newegg that you felt cheated into the purchase, want to exchange it for a 970, and refuse to pay a restocking fee on the 780.

Didn't think of step up program. Nice!

i think the restocking fee is generally to re-coop losses they incur when people send back opened merchandise.....if its unopened and your paying the shipping there not being damaged or being caused a loss in any way......would definitely send it back and get the newer card if it were me

Man I love NewEgg. Great customer service still after all these years. RMA Process has started. No restocking fees either. Thanks for the support and info all. ... Now to wait in line for the next Gen's.

... I do have to admit, it's tempting to crack open this box with the shining new GTX780 sitting next to me. It will be taunting me all weekend. haha

thing is if you open it...your hurting new eggs profit margin.....send it back unopened and everybody wins...be good to them and they will be good to you and the rest of us...cause in the end they can still sell it as brand new and not loose money..... and you can feel like you did the right thing

Why? We still have bad ass cards and mine will go into my 1080p HTPC on the next upgrade. I don't regret my purchase one bit. Then again, I've had it for over a year and not even thinking of selling it so....
