I have this card installed, tried 14.4 and 14.8 driver, Watch Dogs is unplayable. I dropped the resolution to 1024 x 768 @ Low, FPS still average 30 and drops below 10 during actions...

G3258 @4.5GHz (At first I thought it was CPU so I overclocked it, but that changed nothing)
16GB RAM
Windows 7 x64 on SSD, game on HDD RAID 0

any idea why?

Any chance you can list all the settings you're using? Because resolution isn't the only setting in Watch_Dogs that will destroy a videocard's performance...

Also, what are your CCC settings? I hope you're not forcing SSAA or something (let the application decide for all settings).

The game should be playable even through 2560x1440, though that really depends on what settings you're choosing, dude.

I think it is your CPU. In the case of Watch Dogs it is actually running optimized for 4 threads. The G3258 is only 2 cores/2 threads, so the dispatcher is probably struggling to schedule threads, making overclocking irrelevant. The fact that you're getting such poor performance at low settings points to a CPU bottleneck.

^^ This sounds spot on.

idk anything about watch dogs other than it is optimized for Nvidia. Are any of you guys running it nicely on a 280x? below 10 fps can't be simply a cpu bottleneck, can it?

14.8 is for APUs... AMD is being dumber than normal lately.

Try DDU uninstall everything driver related and start over.

Look at the following article:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/watch-dogs-pc-performance,3833-8.html

And notice how, in general, performance is directly affected by number of threads on the processor. Of particular note, look how the frame time variance also increases in the same manner in the graph on the bottom of the page. The worst performing CPU in this roundup, the i3-3220, is a HyperThreaded dual core (2 cores/4 threads). The best performing CPU is the i7-3960X with 6 cores/12 threads.

Are you having any issues with other games you play? Remember that Watch Dogs is extraordinary in the PC market right now with its hardware requirements on PC.

Fwiw, a friend of mines has no issues playing watchdogs or any other game with the g3258. He has it paired with an r9 280x.

I would uninstall all amd drivers first, and then try re-installing catalyst 14.4.

I tried latest official 14.4 driver, poor performance, then 14.8 official (APU driver modified ini, but its WHQL driver), no improvement
The game is kinda playable with Intel HD Graphics in G3258 even at stock frequency..
btw I have CX430 which provides 336W on 12V rail. It has only 1 x 6+2 pin PCIE power so I used a 2 X LP4 to PCIE 6 pin adapter.
In 280x reviews I saw the actual power consumption in games is around 200W, I have 1x SSD + 2x HDD, 336W should be sufficient for my purpose? I know there are people saying u need 750W+, but how can I know it is a power issue

sincerely i would not use anything less than a solid high quality 550W PSU to keep efficiency at good ratings and low operating temperature with less noise.. specially if we are talking of a factory overclocked 280X, you know that your PSU its handling the load because do not trigger any of the protections and shutdown the PC.. but probably you are in the bare limit of what that PSU can do for you.. lucky that pentium chip its efficient and save some watts..

Also OP its worth to mention that the most you drop the resolution and settings the more stress you put in the CPU anyway as people above said that CPU its too weak for watch dogs even overclocked.

according to benchmarks, even with a lower clocked Pentium CPU the game with run 50+ FPS with 280X, in fact the game ran better with Intel HD Graphics before I installed 280X

Wow buying a dual core cpu in 2014?:D you have to be so cpu bottle necked its not funny. I hate to tell you this but its not the only game that uses more than 2 threads and i imagine that will account for 99% of new games coming out....there all coded for consoles these days so I can't see a dual core doing that well here on out.....is there a demo of the game i can try running it on mine and see what the actual cpu/gpu usage is since thats the first thing anyone should check.....on mine i imagine the gpu would be the bottleneck but mines got a few more cores

I feel the CPU is to blame also.

Coo someone asked you a good question before.

Do you have poor performance with the 280X on all games or Just Watch Dogs?

I know you've tried and seen things that lead you away from the CPU but try other games. Do some other suggestions drivers etc...

Try another Power supply but ultimately I think the CPU and it's lack of threads may be it for Watch Dogs.

Well i ran the demo on my system just to confirm what i already suspected...a 280x or 7970 runs this game no problem even on highest settings....it seemed to need about the same cpu power as bf4 and im not to surprised since its a new game.....i can imagine it be easy to pull very high fps at 1080p just turning down a setting or 2 (assuming you need 100fps)

are you even bothering to check your cpu usage while playing? is it pegged? if so there's your answer if not then its possible a driver issue but i be shocked if this games is not using at least 4 threads, and that cant be great for a dual core
