Starpoint Gemini 2

It looks very interesting, but I have real misgivings about buying things on early access.

I have several Early Access titles that I enjoy. You just have to research it first. The only one that I feel burned on was Starbound. That turned out to be dud.

The release date is September 26th but at the same time, they are still working on the main quest line. They also have to figure out the progression path of the ship because currently, you start with the most powerful ship items ( so I've read and that was for testing purposes ). The first game was a bomb and the devs admitted that Starpoint Gemini 1 was their first time making a game. They learned a lot of lessons and rebuilt the engine from scratch.

If you scroll down, you can see a developer passed out in a sleeping bag:

I bought this on sale a few months ago, but haven't played it too much. It's very much like Freelancer. Also, the developers are some of the most active and responsive on the Steam forums that I've ever seen, so they deserve kudos for that alone. Updates have been very regular (like several a month) and they have actually been steadily marching towards their goals and planned features, unlike many other Early Access titles.

I say go for it.

There's a planned expansion for the game, so you might want to wait and get everything all-in-one. Then again, Elite: Dangerous is Q4, 2014.

It is out and people are digging it. So far, few issues reported and people are comparing it to Freelancer. It is on sale now around $28 on Steam. I might bite. I want Elite too but it's too $$ for me atm.

Got it. Plays well. A bit sparse in the cinematic scenes but otherwise a solid game so far. It is a lot like Freelancer. I would consider it a mod of that game with upgraded everything. Easy to play.

Me too. I suppose a good rule would be 'don't expect an early access game to feel complete or to run well' I bought Wasteland 2 early, played a while and set it aside. Getting back to it now so many things have changed and been fleshed out.

Just got this the other day from Steam and it's pretty awesome. I'm generally into the RTS, turn based, tactical, strategy type way open ended game though and this hits the mark dead on. I don't bother with campaign and just do the sandbox. Still getting to know it but so far I'm finding it a well paced game that doesn't require you to grind too much - there are different ways of making money. And long travels can be mitigated with teleport mechanisms (varying kinds with varying risks too!). These are always my two biggest concerns with super open ended sandbox games. This one handles it well and so far from my google searching for tips (which is how I found this thread), devs are VERY involved with continuing to improve this game.
